Harmony announces $1M hackathon aimed at merging traditional finance and DeFi

The hackathon will run for roughly six weeks from Aug. 15 to Sept. 30 and include four challenges from three different categories.

The Harmony blockchain has opened registration for a hackathon starting next month with more than $1 million in seed funding and prizes for participants.

In a Thursday announcement on Twitter, Harmony said the hackathon would be focused on bringing in more people from traditional finance for challenges bridging their fields and decentralized finance. The protocol said there would be four challenges in each category of social wallets and keyless security, cross-chain and trustless bridges, and cross-border with fintech integration.

“In blockchain, finance is where we are seeing product market fit,” said Harmony. “But most of DeFi was created by people who didn't come from traditional finance. We want to bring more TradFi in to contribute to DeFi. We know they have much to teach us and we can help them understand and harness the power of DeFi and teach them a lot as well.”

SushiSwap core developer Omakase is listed as one of the featured speakers or judges for the event, alongside Earn.com co-founder Lily Liu, DeFi Alliance lead Imran Khan, and others. Sponsors include CoinGecko, Messari, Unstoppable Domains, DappRadar, SushiSwap, DoraHacks, news platform The Defiant, and Hummingbot.

A sharding protocol with a trustless Ethereum bridge that separates its chain into segments that process transactions and store data in parallel, Harmony's mainnet first went live in 2019. The project has since announced multiple partnerships and integrations, including with stablecoin platform Terra for its token to migrate to Harmony and be used on applications in the ecosystem.

Harmony said last month it would be sponsoring the hackathon in its aim to reach 10 billion people. Teams for the event will be limited to 5 people, with registration closing Aug. 15. It will conduct the event over roughly six weeks from the submission deadline until Sept. 30.

Altcoins bag double-digit gains as Bitcoin price approaches $37,000

MATIC, SUSHI and CAKE soar after Bitcoin bulls finally press the price above the $35,000 resistance.

Cryptocurrency prices surged on June 29 as Bitcoin (BTC) price pushed through the $35,000 resistance level and lifted the total market cap by $93 billion, with $50 billion of that total flooding into altcoins.

Bitcoin put on a 7% gain on the day to climb back above $36,000 and leading traders to expect a rally to the $38,000 to $41,000 level if (BTC) can flip the $35,000 level into support.

As the market turned green, data from Cointelegraph Markets Pro tracked notable bullish developments in a number of select altcoins including Polygon (MATIC), SushiSwap (SUSHI) and PancakeSwap (CAKE).

Polygon (MATIC)

The first coin that has been gaining traction lately is Polygon (MATIC), an Ethereum (ETH) network layer-two solution, whose price has increased 35% since its swing low price of $0.93 on June 22 as BTC crashed below $29,000.

VORTECS™ data from Cointelegraph Markets Pro began to detect a bullish outlook for MATIC on June 27, prior to the recent price rise.

The NewsQuake™ alert system caught the news of MATIC being listed at OKEx on June 28 and this was followed by a rise in the VORTECS™ Score to a high of 91 and a price rally of 10% on June 29.

SushiSwap (SUSHI)

SushiSwap (SUSHI) was also identified as a strong mover by Cointelegraph Markets Pro after the asset's VORTECS™ Score turned bullish.

SUSHI's price is now up 42% from its swing-low price of $3.96, which occurred on June 22.

PancakeSwap (CAKE)

Data from Cointelegraph Markets Pro also signaled a bullish VORTECS™ Score for PancakeSwap (CAKE), a Binance Smart Chain-based automated market maker and decentralized exchange.

CAKE's price is now up 50% from its swing-low price of $9.64, which also occurred on June 22.

Bitcoin breaks above $36,000

The strength seen across the altcoin market the past two days is in large part thanks to the strong performance of Bitcoin, which finally pushed above the $35,000 resistance and currently trades at $36,400.

Sushiswap to deploy full suite of Sushi products on Harmony’s blockchain

“We believe this partnership with Sushi is just the beginning of bringing millions of people into decentralized finance,” said Harmony founder Stephen Tse.

As the Harmony blockchain approaches the two-year anniversary of its mainnet launch, decentralized exchange SushiSwap will be deploying Sushi products related to rewards and yield farming.

In a Thursday announcement from Sushi, the project said it would be partnering with Harmony to introduce liquidity mining rewards for Sushi, rewards for Kashi borrowing and lending, Sushi-specific hackathon challenges, and other products. In Harmony’s aim to reach 10 billion people, it will be sponsoring a $1 million hackathon with Sushi featuring four challenges, with additional details to come in July.

“We believe this partnership with Sushi is just the beginning of bringing millions of people into decentralized finance,” said Harmony founder Stephen Tse. “As our mainnet matures, we are onboarding more key DeFi primitives that will enable access to many new communities.”

As part of the partnership, products include Sushi deploying a liquidity mining campaign on Harmony, with $1 million in Onsen (ONE) rewards and $1 million in 1SUSHI rewards available over 12 months. In addition, liquidity providers of Sushi’s ONE/ETH pool can earn SUSHI rewards according to the blockchain’s Onsen campaign.

Sushi’s Kashi lending platform will also offer users $2 million yield rewards on their assets through BentoBox on Harmony. Though the vault is native to Sushi and will not be moving to the new blockchain, Sushi said decentralized apps built using BentoBox — in this case, Kashi — can utilize all its assets.

Launched last year as a Uniswap fork, SushiSwap ranks 6th on CoinMarketCap’s list of decentralized exchanges, behind Uniswap’s v3 and v2 and others. However, data from Messari at the time of publication shows SushiSwap has more than $3 billion in total value locked, with more $86 billion in transactions. Sushi is responsible for roughly 15% of all decentralized exchange volume.
