Aptos Labs, NBCUniversal partner for Web3 fan experiences, gaming

More fun is in store for filmgoers like Free Renfield The Game and the Excorcist 3: Believer premiums.

Aptos Labs and NBCUniversal have entered into a long-term development agreement to provide the entertainment company with Web3 fan experiences, customer loyalty programs and gaming. Aptos already has a track record developing fan experiences for major Universal films.

Aptos will expand on previous Web3 initiatives offered by NBCUniversal, according to an announcement. Aptos developed Free Renfield the Game in March 2023 based on the film “Renfield.” The game lets players search for bugs that give the possessor superhuman powers and match them to scenes from the movie. They then won prizes that included collectible digital art.

In September, Aptos created behind-the-scenes media, augmented reality filters, digital art and opportunities to win prizes for purchasers of tickets to “The Exorcist: Believer” through the Fandango service.

Google and Magic Leap partner up to make metaverse goggles despite past flops

It’s unclear why the two companies have partnered up, but the scheme comes amid Apple’s push to dominate the “spatial computing” market.

Magic Leap recently announced “a multi-faceted, strategic technology partnership” with Google to develop new extended reality technologies.

The partnership marks what could be considered an odd pairing in the tech world. Google recently trimmed down its augmented and extended reality teams (AR/XR) and Magic Leap is the creator of one of the field’s biggest flops. Still, as this news could indicate further competition for Apple and Meta when it comes to metaverse hardware and experiences, it very well could bode well for the metaverse as a whole.

The partnership will highlight Magic Leap’s advances in the field of optics alongside Google’s infrastructure, according to a statement from Magic Leap CTO Julie Larson-Green:

Religious leaders debate going to church in the metaverse

With the Pope sounding off on AI recently, the discourse surrounding religion and technology has heated up.

When the first radio and television broadcasts began to trickle into homes around the world, religious programming was among the early mainstays of both new mediums. Now, as the world pivots away from flat, 2D screens and frequency-bound audio broadcasts, religious practitioners from around the globe have begun adopting metaverse, Web3, spatial computing, and artificial intelligence technologies as conduits to faith.

However, there are still naysayers who believe there are dangers associated with these technologies, faith leaders who wonder if modern technological trappings are necessary, and billions of traditional religious followers awaiting guidance.

On the supporting side, Sreevas Sahasranamam a Professor at the University of Glasgow, recently expounded on the positive potential for a metaverse for practitioners of the Hindu faith in Swarajya magazine:

More than half of the Fortune 100 uses Apple’s Vision Pro headset

Spatial computing in the industrial metaverse appears to be paying off for the company that Steve Jobs built.

Apple’s Vision Pro headset, a mixed-reality spatial computing device, has been adopted by a majority of Fortune 100 companies with more than half purchasing at least one.

Company CEO Tim Cook relayed the information during Apple’s first quarter 2024 earnings call, citing Vision Pro adoption as a sign of increased enthusiasm for the company’s products:

The Vision Pro launched in early February of 2024 with a price tag of $3,499 in the United States. In the time since, it doesn’t appear to have made much of a dent in the consumer market where much lower priced options such as Meta’s Quest line of VR headsets.

EU touts health benefits for children in the metaverse despite risks

The European Union’s in-house think tanks says the metaverse can help children heal from diseases.

The European Parliamentary Research Service (EPRS), a government think tank for the European Union, recently published a letter discussing the opportunities and challenges for children in the metaverse.

According to the post’s author, EPRS policy analyst Maria Niestadt, the metaverse can “boost children’s creativity and motivation to learn and even help them heal from diseases” and enable cultural and social experiences they may not otherwise be able to experience.

However, there are numerous challenges that the EU must face, according to the EPRS, including protecting children from adverse mental and physical outcomes related to the use of virtual, augmented, and/or mixed reality headsets as well as security and privacy issues.

Doctors turn to Apple’s Vision Pro headset to practice surgery amid cadaver shortage

Veyond Metaverse aims to mimic the traditional cadaver experience in visceral detail with Apple’s mixed reality device.

Veyond Metaverse, a medical technology company, recently announced that its medical telepresence platform would expand its footprint to the Apple Vision Pro.

The company’s real-time translation and remote communication services were previously used on traditional virtual and augmented reality headsets to conduct what it claims to be the world’s first “digital surgery” in 2023.

With the addition of Apple’s recently released Vision Pro headset, Veyond Metaverse appears to be entering the high-end medical telepresence market at a time when the need for new doctors exceeds the global cadaver supply.

Google Cloud teams up with MultiversX amid blockchain firm’s focus on metaverse

MultiversX announced an array of new features on its xPortal super-app with tools to build next-gen metaverse features on the same day of the Google Cloud partnership.

Google Cloud has teamed up with blockchain infrastructure firm MultiversX (formerly Elrond) to boost its Web 3 presence. Google Cloud has integrated MultiversX into the platform which will in turn help Web3 projects and users derive valuable insights from powerful data analytics and artificial intelligence tools within the Google Cloud ecosystem.

MultiversX claims that the partnership between the two firms has the potential to immediately streamline the execution of large-scale, data-first blockchain projects. This should help developers easily access data about addresses, transacted amounts, smart contract interactions, and increased on-chain analytics, the company said.

On the other hand, the Google Cloud involvement in the MultiversX network will enable ecosystem builders to utilize advanced tools and services available on the platform to bring high performance and scalability to their decentralized application dApps’ non-blockchain components. Daniel Rood, Head of Web3 EMEA at Google Cloud, added:

“There are exciting opportunities to enable Web3 developers to build and scale faster and as we explore new verticals within the space, our partnership with MultiversX will allow us to expand our strategy and reach further and solidify our position as one of the main innovation drivers in the blockchain world.”

MultiverseX has forged multiple partnerships with mainstream brands in the past as well to push the Web3 use cases in the traditional world. The first European institutional marketplace for digital assets, ICI D|SERVICES, as well as Audi's platform for in-car virtual reality, holoride, have both chosen MultiversX as their platform of choice.

The blockchain infrastructure firm focused on metaverse scalability also announced a set of new scalable features for its decentralized digital asset wallet xPortal SuperApp. The updated features will allow users to handle money easily in both fiat and cryptocurrency. Users of the xPortal will have access to peer-to-peer fiat payments as well as European IBANs, SEPA, and SWIFT by the beginning of 2024.

The platform also announced the launch of the xWorlds Developer Kit, which offers an array of unique tools that creators can use to build the next generation of augmented reality experiences through leveraging xPortal as a wallet and distribution hub. The kit includes highly realistic AI-powered 3D avatars as well.

‘Extended reality’ to create 860K jobs by 2025: EU Commission

The European Commission has laid out its plans for becoming a “world leader” in Web 4.0 and the Metaverse.

The European Commission has tipped “extended reality” — technology that enables people to interact with virtual worlds — will create as many as 860,000 jobs in Europe by 2025.

Extended reality or XR is an umbrella term for immersive technologies including virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality, and is a “major technology enabler” for virtual worlds, said the Commission on July 11.

“The impact on employment is expected to be highly significant,” it said, noting that another 1.2 million to 2.4 million jobs would be directly or indirectly created in other sectors by 2025.

However, the Commission noted that today, most of the innovation around the Metaverse occurs in the United States, China and South Korea.

“Contrary to these countries, in the EU there are no tech giants to lead the investment in the development of virtual worlds over the next decade.”

Most of the AR/VR market activity in Europe focuses on gaming, media and entertainment, but there’s “much room” for other applications, including retail, healthcare, military and defense, and manufacturing.

The Commission noted that virtual worlds, enabled by these XR devices, are one of the technologies enabling the “next generation” of the world wide web — Web 4.0 — where physical and digital objects come together in virtual environments in real-time.

“We are at the onset of a major technological transition, Web 4.0. Virtual worlds are an important enabler of Web 4.0 that can significantly revolutionize the daily lives of people and open a wide range of opportunities in many business and industrial ecosystems,” it said.

Some examples included using virtual worlds to train surgeons for complex medical procedures, using “digital twins” to preserve cultural heritage buildings, or even, using 3D models to solve global warming.

In its working document submitted to the European Parliament, the Commission proposed its plan to become a “world leader” in Web 4.0 and the Metaverse.

“Today, Europe throws its hat in the ring to become a world leader in Web 4.0 and virtual worlds,” said Thierry Breton, the European Commissioner for Internal Market.

A total of 10 actions have been proposed by the Commission to achieve this, including attracting specialized virtual world talent to the region, creating regulatory sandboxes to test novel ideas and developing global standards for interoperable metaverses.

“Europe has what it takes to lead the next technological transition: innovative start-ups, rich creative content, and industrial applications, a strong role as a global standard-setter, and an innovation-friendly and predictable legal framework,” added Breton.
