DOGE co-founder sets sights on Ethereum bridge and NFTs for mass adoption

Billy Markus has talked up a proposed Dogecoin-to-Ethereum bridge so that DOGE can be used on top NFT marketplaces such as OpenSea.

Dogecoin (DOGE) co-founder Billy Markus has set his sights on nonfungible tokens (NFTs) and an Ethereum-to-Dogecoin bridge to help bring about for mass adoption of the meme coin.

In a Sept. 30 tweet, Markus emphasized the importance of completing the Ethereum-Dogecoin bridge so that the asset could be integrated with top Ethereum-based NFT platforms such as OpenSea, enabling non fungible purchases with DOGE.

Markus said that there is “high demand” to purchase NFTs within the crypto community and that enabling NFT purchases with DOGE “greatly increases its utility.”

The in development DOGE-ETH bridge would enable users to send DOGE from the Dogecoin blockchain to the Ethereum blockchain, and transact with the asset in sectors such as decentralized finance (DeFi) and NFTs via ERC-20 DOGE token contracts.

The bridge would provide extra utility for DOGE, as it could provide a fun alternative to Ether which dominates NFT payments, while also ramping up transaction levels and usage via circulation in various DeFi protocols on Ethereum.

In an interview with podcaster Lex Fridman on June 4, Ethereum co-founder and DOGE investor Vitalik Buterin also emphasized the bullish potential that an Ethereum-bridge could have for DOGE, noting that:

"If DOGE wants to somehow bridge to Ethereum, and then people can trade DOGE thousands of times a second inside a loop ring, then that would be amazing."

In Markus’s Twitter thread, he was asked if the bridge is in the works, and responded that “people are working on the DOGE-ETH bridge, yes,” without naming names.

Organizations such as DogeLabs — a collaboration of developers focused on the Dogecoin chain — announced on June 18 that it was exploring the idea of building a Doge-ETH bridge that would enable hodlers to use the asset in Ethereum-based DeFi staking.

DogeLabs also stated that it was looking to the development of a DOGE burn wallet where developers can build “applications that send a small portion of Doge to a public burn wallet to assist in building a deflationary mode around DOGE inflationary growth.”

Markus stepped away from working on Dogecoin in 2015 — selling his stash for the equivalent of a used Honda Civic — however the co-founder is a member of the advisory board of the Dogecoin foundation that was re-established in August. Buterin is also a member of the advisory board.

The non-profit foundation supports and advocates for the development of Dogecoin, while also protecting its trademark from the likes of copycats such as Dogecoin 2.0.

Cointelegraph reported on Sept. 2 that the Dogecoin Foundation demanded the "Dogecoin 2.0" project change its name and had hired brand protection lawyers to contact the knockoff’s developers in a bid to “protect the Dogecoin community from being misled and to protect the Dogecoin name from possible misuse.”

Axe reveals limited run of Dogecoin-themed body spray

Axe is set to drop a limited run of a free Dogecoin-themed body spray dubbed “Dogecan,” which is described as exhibiting a “dank musk.”

Popular male grooming product manufacturer, Axe. is set to launch a limited run of Dogecoin (DOGE)-themed body spray dubbed “Dogecan.”

Axe’s Dogecans will be given out for free, with consumers encouraged to register on the firm’s website for a chance to receive a can. However, the marketing campaign appears to be unavailable to DOGE fanatics outside of the U.S.

The company has already sent out early samples to popular Dogecoin personalities, including Dogecoin co-founder Billy Markus, popular Twitter account Dogecoin Rise, and musician and DOGE proponent Lil Mook.

The marketing campaign was first teased back in April around Doge Day, with Axe asserting that it would produce a “crypto scented” body spray should DOGE surpass $1.

Despite DOGE never hitting the $1 mark, the firm has gone ahead with producing the body spray, describing the product as having a “dank musk.” The deodorant’s packing includes a card that reads:

“We’re going to the moon, in this can you’ll find the crypto-confidence you need to get there.”

Since DOGE’s all time high of $0.73 on May 8, the price of Elon Musk’s purported favorite cryptocurrency has declined by 76.1% to sit at $0.17 today, according to data from CoinGecko.

Despite DOGE’s downward trend toward the end of the second quarter, Cointelegraph recently reported that daily DOGE volume increased nearly 13 times during Q2 to tag roughly almost $1 billion on average.

Nifty News: Doge NFTs much wow, Paris Hilton is an NFT advisor, NFT game raises $3M

The founder of Doge dropped a three-tiered series of NFTs and Paris Hilton becomes an NFT advisor.

Billy Markus, the co-founder and engineer of Dogecoin (DOGE), who also sold off his DOGE stash for the equivalent of a used Honda Civic in 2015, has entered the nonfungible token (NFT) market.

On June 9, Markus unveiled the drop of Doge-based NFTs dubbed “Capped Dogecoin” which he described as “Much cap, very deflation, many tokenomics. Many Available.”

The NFTs are split into three tiers, and all depict a spinning golden coin, with a picture of the iconic Shiba Inu in a Dogecoin baseball cap — with the upper two-tiered NFTs having more detail such as a colored cap, an outer space background or a shiner polish to the coin.

Tier-one is an open edition of 420 copies and can be purchased on Rarible for 0.081 wrapped Ether (wETH) worth $208.52 at current prices.

Tier-two is already sold out on Rarible, and had three copies which sold for 0.8 Ether (ETH) each worth around $2,063.

The third tier consisted of a one-of-one which sold for 1.5 ETH worth $3,866 on Foundation earlier today, with Foundation user “swaggmire” purchasing the rights to the NFT.

Interestingly, “swaggmire” went on to re-list the NFT for 420.69 ETH worth around $1 million, however that appeared to be in jest, as they promptly changing the price to 6 ETH worth roughly $15,500.

Paris Hilton becomes an NFT advisor

While other celebrities have since left the NFT space following a cooldown of prices in the market, billionaire and self-described “boss girl” Paris Hilton is doubling down.

According to a June 8 Medium blog post from Origin — Paris Hilton has joined the team as an investor and an advisor, with the firm seeking her out to provide expertise on how to cater to the upper echelons of society.

“As an investor and advisor, Paris will provide strategic advice on how to most effectively deliver value with NFTs for top-tier creators like celebrities, influencers, and brands.” the blog post read.

Origin is an Ethereum-based protocol that helps buyers and sellers transact in a decentralized environment.

According to the firm’s website, the project wants to bring “NFTs and DeFi to the masses” by enabling users to host NFT sales on their own domains, and also by offering yielding returns along with its governance token, and OUSD stablecoin.

Guild of Guardians

A new mobile-based NFT game called Guild of Guardians has completed the first wave of its "Founder’s NFT sale," raising $3 million in sales, according to an announcement shared with Cointelegraph.

The sale was for a collection of usable and “playable” NFTs that will be introduced into the game, with prices ranging from $200 to $100,000.

Guild of Gurdians

Philippines-based crypto gaming collective Yield Guide Games purchased one of the 10 “mythic guild” NFT worth $100,000. The mythic guild NFT allows up to 50 players to enter the game and provides the guild owner a 10% cut of earnings from guild crafting in the game.

“The community response has been incredible. Over 50% of all sales came via referrals — indicating that the community was sharing with each other, and there is a real 'share-to-earn' aspect in place," said Derek Lau, Game lead for Guild of Guardians.

The game follows the play to earn model, however, Lau also expressed the importance of developing a game that is fun to play and not just about the monetary rewards:

“Rather than 'play-to-earn,' we want to instill the idea of 'play-and-earn' — ensuring that players are not just playing to make money alone, but playing for fun and great gameplay as well," Lau said
