US attorneys push Biden to help free Binance exec held in Nigeria

Concerns increased over Tigran Gambaryan’s well-being on Oct. 18 after his illness prevented him from appearing in court.

A group of 18 state attorneys general has urged President Joe Biden to help secure the release of Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan, who has been detained in Nigeria since February 2024.

The attorneys general have asked Biden to designate Gambaryan as a hostage under the Robert Levinson Hostage Recovery and Hostage-Taking Accountability Act.

The group expressed concern over Gambaryan’s deteriorating health and the unlawful nature of his detention, according to a joint letter sent on Oct. 18.

Detained Binance exec posts new bail motion citing worsening health

In June, Nigeria’s Federal Inland Revenue Service dropped charges against Binance executives Tigran Gambaryan and Nadeem Anjarwalla.

The trial of Tigran Gambaryan, the Binance executive currently detained in Nigeria, recommenced on Sept. 2, 2024. Gambaryan’s attorneys filed a new motion for bail, citing the executive’s deteriorating health.

Lawyers for Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) immediately opposed the motion, arguing that Gambaryan was not in poor health, despite counsel for the government regulator submitting the detained executive’s health records to the court, which indicate that he requires surgery.

According to family spokespeople, these health records — which prison officials have failed to produce to the court for months — were lacking critical medical documentation such as MRI images performed on Gambaryan.

Mohammed Idris, Nigeria’s minister of information and national orientation, emphasized that Gambaryan enjoys full consular support from his home government.

The Nigerian government has denied claims that Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan is in poor prison conditions. A government minister argued that he receives quality medical care and complete consular services, and he emphasized a commitment to lawful trial and judicial integrity.

In a June 21 statement, Mohammed Idris, Nigeria’s minister of information and national orientation, addressed the claims made about poor prison conditions and Gambaryan’s health.

Idris’ statement comes on the heels of a recent post by two United States Members of Congress, Representative French Hill and Representative Chrissy Houlahan, who visited Gambaryan at the Kuje Detention facility on June 19, 2024. The pair posted a video of the visit on X, calling for his release.
