CleanSpark becomes fourth Bitcoin miner to hold 10,000 BTC

CleanSpark joins MARA Holdings, Riot Platforms and Hut 8 Mining Corp as a major listed Bitcoin mining firm with 10,000 Bitcoin or more on its balance sheet.

United States Bitcoin mining firm CleanSpark says it now holds 10,097 Bitcoin in its treasury — making it the fourth public-listed mining firm to currently hold more than 10,000 Bitcoin.

It follows a 236% year-over-year increase in CleanSpark’s Bitcoin (BTC)-denominated treasury, which CleanSpark’s CEO Zach Bradford attributed to the company scaling more efficiently and responsibly in a Jan. 9 statement.

All of CleanSpark’s 10,097 Bitcoin has been mined in the US, supporting American energy and jobs while contributing to the growth of Bitcoin’s global ecosystem, Bradford added.

Tesla earnings: Bitcoin bags untouched as firm splashes out on AI

Tesla held onto its sizeable Bitcoin bags in the third quarter and upped its spending on artificial intelligence and research and development.

Electric vehicle maker Tesla  made no changes to its sizeable Bitcoin (BTC) holdings — the fifth quarter in a row — though it has directed more funds to double its computing capacity amid artificial intelligence efforts.

Tesla’s Q3 2023 results released on Oct. 18 show as of Sept. 30, it held $184 million worth of digital assets — a portion of the $1.5 billion worth of Bitcoin it first bought in March 2021.

The latest quarterly results mean it hasn’t bought or sold any Bitcoin since its sell-off of around 75% of its holdings in Q2 2022 when it fetched $936 million for more than 30,000 BTC.

On the other hand, Tesla reported it had “more than doubled the size” of its computing power for its AI projects, citing a growing training data set and switching the training of its humanoid robot Optimus to AI rather than coded software.

“We have commissioned one of the world’s largest supercomputers to accelerate the pace of our AI development, with compute capacity more than doubling compared to Q2.”

Tesla saw its third-quarter earnings and profits miss Wall Street estimates, with reported total revenues of $23.35 billion. While this was up by nearly 9% from the prior-year period, it missed Zacks Investment Research’s estimate of $24.38 billion.

It also missed projected profits, with reported earnings per share (EPS) of $0.66 compared to Zack’s $0.72 EPS estimate.

Total third-quarter operating expenses came in at $2.41 billion, marking more than a 13% increase from last quarter and over a 42.5% increase from the prior year.

Tesla’s research and development expenses were $1.16 billion in the quarter, a 58% jump from last year. It attributed the increases to its “Cybertruck, AI and other R&D projects.”

Elon Musk’s Tesla held onto its Bitcoin in Q4 despite market turbulence

The EV maker continued to hold its estimated 9,720 Bitcoin, only losing $34 million on its investment due to price declines towards the end of 2022.

Electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla refused to offload any more Bitcoin (BTC) during the latter half of 2022 despite selling off 75% of its holdings in the second quarter.

In its latest Q4 results report on Jan. 25, Tesla’s financials show it neither bought or sold any of its Bitcoin for the second quarter in a row. This was despite hefty market turmoil in November and December on the collapse of FTX.

The documents show the company holds $184 million in digital assets as of Dec. 31, 2022, down from its $218 million in holdings from the quarter prior due to $34 million of impairment charges as Bitcoin’s price declined between the end of September and December last year.

Bitcoin was around $19,500 on Sep. 30, 2022, before dropping almost 15% to $16,600 by Dec. 31.

The EV manufacturer also held onto its Bitcoin through Q3 last year after selling 75% of its Bitcoin during the second quarter. The Q2 sale added $936 million in cash to Tesla’s books and the firm profited $64 million.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk explained at the time the sale was to "prove liquidity of Bitcoin as an alternative to holding cash on a balance sheet."

However, its Bitcoin holdings or take on Bitcoin was not discussed in Tesla’s most recent earnings call on Jan. 25. Based on estimates, Tesla holds about 9,720 BTC.

Overall, Tesla recorded $5.7 billion in profits from $24.3 billion in revenues for Q4 with its gross margins coming in at the lowest level in five quarters. The company posted a total profit of $20.8 million for 2022 from $81.4 billion in revenues.

The revenue figure missed analyst estimates but its profits did better than consensus estimates.

Tesla’s share price was up slightly on the day, closing at a gain of nearly 0.40%. It continued to trade positively after hours, up nearly 4.6% at the time of writing according to Google Finance data.
