US government says funds from 2016 hack should return to Bitfinex

Due to a prior reimbursement plan from Bitfinex, many victims of the 2016 hack do not legally qualify as victims eligible for reimbursement.

Attorneys for the US government recently submitted a motion requesting that the Bitcoin (BTC) forfeited as a result of the 2016 Bitfinex hack should be returned to the cryptocurrency exchange.

The Jan. 14 legal filing stipulated the return of approximately 94,643 BTC and unspecified amounts of Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Bitcoin Satoshi Vision (BSV) and Bitcoin Gold (BTG) generated through hard forks back to the exchange on an in-kind basis.

Ilya Lichtenstein and his wife Heather Morgan, aka Razzlekhan, were both arrested in 2022 and later convicted for the 2016 hack of the Bitfinex exchange, which resulted in the theft of 119,754 BTC.

Bitcoin breakout ‘likely no later’ than Jan FOMC meeting: 10x Research

Bitcoin’s price is primed for a breakout before the end-of-month FOMC meeting, but it could go either way, says a crypto analyst.

Bitcoin is shaping up for a price breakout by the end of January ahead of the United States Federal Open Market Committee meeting on Jan. 29, says 10x Research head of research Markus Thielen.

But that breakout may see Bitcoin’s (BTC) price go up or down from its current level of $96,794, he said.

“Bitcoin trades within a narrowing triangle, signaling a breakout is imminent — likely no later than the January 29 FOMC meeting,” Thielen said in a Jan. 14 markets report.

Bitfinex hacker speaks out after sentencing

Ilya Lichtenstein urged his social media followers not to blame his wife — also implicated in money laundering — for the 2016 Bitfinex hack.

Ilya Lichtenstein, the hacker who stole and laundered Bitcoin from the crypto exchange Bitfinex, has released a statement on social media after being sentenced to five years in prison.

In a Dec. 19 X post, Lichtenstein reaffirmed many of the statements he made in court leading to his incarceration. He confessed to hacking Bitfinex in 2016 and laundering “thousands of Bitcoin” but suggested he wanted to shoulder the entirety of the blame rather than his wife, Heather Morgan, who was also sentenced to prison time for her role in laundering Bitcoin (BTC).

“I knew what I was doing was wrong and did it anyway because I didn’t care, I didn’t care about anyone else except myself,” said Lichtenstein in a video message from prison, often appearing as though he were reading a prepared statement.

Bitcoin may ‘pump then rotate back’ if US strategic reserve gets approved

A crypto analyst warns that Bitcoin’s price could face volatility if the highly anticipated United States Bitcoin Strategic Reserve bill gets passed.

A crypto analyst has warned that if approved, Senator Lummis’ proposal for the United States government to acquire 5% of Bitcoin’s supply could cause increased price volatility in the short term.

“I expect it to be pretty volatile, especially if the strategic Bitcoin reserve gets approved; I think Bitcoin will pump then rotate back,” Collective Shift founder Ben Simpson told Cointelegraph.

Cointelegraph recently reported that after Trump’s winning the presidential election on Nov. 5, Wyoming Senator Cynthia Lummis — a Trump supporter, Republican and crypto advocate — said she would move forward with legislation for the US government to buy 1 million Bitcoin (BTC) and hold it for at least 20 years.

One of the two individuals responsible for laundering stolen Bitcoin connected to the 2016 hack of crypto exchange Bitfinex has been sentenced to 18 months in prison.

Washington, DC, District Court Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly sentenced Heather Morgan — also known by her rapper alter ego “Razzlekhan” — to 18 months in prison in a Nov. 18 hearing. Morgan pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering and defraud the United States in August 2023.

Morgan and her husband, Ilya Lichtenstein, admitted to laundering millions of dollars worth of Bitcoin (BTC) stolen from Bitfinex before their 2022 arrests.
