Bitcoin ETF options expected by Q1 2025: Bloomberg analyst

Options on Bitcoin ETFs could speed up adoption among financial advisers, James Seyffart said at Permissionless.

Options on Bitcoin (BTC) exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are likely to launch in the United States by the first quarter of 2025, according to James Seyffart, a Bloomberg Intelligence analyst.

“I think before the end of the year is possible for options, but more likely in Q1 2025,” Seyffart said during an Oct. 9 panel discussion at the Permissionless conference.

In September, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) authorized Nasdaq to list options tied to BlackRock’s Bitcoin ETF, iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT).

Prediction markets like Polymarket a ‘public good,’ more accurate than polls

While some say that prediction markets are a risk to democracy, others think they could serve the public by offering valuable insights and risk management tools.

Despite recent confrontations with regulators, election markets can provide more accurate insights into public sentiment than polls, according to industry observers.

In May 2024, the United States Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) proposed a rule to ban derivatives used to bet on the outcome of US elections and other major real-world events.

The CFTC’s proposal drove US-based regulated prediction market platform Kalshi to take the commission to court. Columbia District Judge Jia Cobb rejected the CFTCs proposal, stating that “Kalshi’s contracts do not involve unlawful activity or gaming. They involve elections, which are neither.”

Coinbase urges court to reconsider appeal, cites SEC vs Ripple

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) sued Coinbase in June 2023 and accused the company of selling unregistered securities.

Attorneys for Coinbase urged Southern District of New York judge Katherine Failla to reconsider an interlocutory appeal filed on behalf of the exchange in April 2024 — citing the Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) recent notice of appeal in the Ripple lawsuit.

According to an Oct. 5 letter, lawyers for Coinbase argued that the SEC's appeal is an admission that the criteria listed in the regulator's Howey Test — a set of conditions that must all be fulfilled to classify a financial instrument as a security — were ambiguous and warranted closer examination.
