Elon Musk imposes ‘rate limit’ on Twitter citing extreme ‘system manipulation’

Verified Twitter users will be allowed to view 10,000 posts per day, while new, unverified accounts will get 500 under the new limits.

Social media platform Twitter is temporarily limiting the number of posts that users will be allowed to read per day, after seeing “extreme levels of data scraping and system manipulation,” according to executive chairman Elon Musk.

In a July 1 post, Musk said the temporary limits will see verified accounts capped at 10,000 posts per day, while unverified and new, unverified accounts are capped at 1,000 and 500 posts per day respectively:

Twitter users had been reporting issues on the platform over the last few days including the inability to retrieve tweets, missing timelines, and being met with a "rate limited exceeded" message, leading to the hashtag #TwitterDown #TwitterFail to trend in certain jurisdictions.

Real-time outage monitor website Downdetector has seen thousands of user-submitted reports claiming Twitter outages over the last 24 hours.

France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and the East and West Coasts of the United States appear to be the most affected regions, according to Is The Service Down.

Musk didn’t clarify what may be responsible for scraping Twitter’s data and didn’t elaborate on the root cause behind the “system manipulation” claim, but said that their data was being "pillaged" so much it was degrading service for users.

Some suggest that the extreme "data scraping" has been caused by web-browsing-enabled artificial intelligence chatbots, such as OpenAI's GPT-4.

According to Twitter’s developer documents, rate limits are imposed to manage the volume of requests made to Twitter’s Application Program Interface (API).

“These limits help us provide the reliable and scalable API that our developer community relies on,” the document states.

Jack Dorsey, the co-founder and former CEO of Twitter was among the few that defended the recent moves in a July 2 post, noting that “Running Twitter is hard” and that the decision was likely made for the greater good of the platform.

He added that he’d like to see Twitter move to a “truly censorship-resistant open protocol” like Bitcoin and Nostr:

Outside of the office, Musk appears to be training for a potential mixed martial arts cage fight with fellow billionaire and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

The New Frontier: Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson goes hunting for aliens and UFOs

Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb is leading the expedition and said the team had found a couple of bizarre objects.

Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson is currently searching for an unidentified flying object — or some sort of space entity — that has crashed near the coast of Papua New Guinea in the Pacific Ocean.

The search is part of the Galileo Project, which received $1.5 million in funding from Hoskinson in March.

The project is operating an expedition led by Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb and his student Amir Siraj, who identified a “meteor of interstellar origin” that crashed into Earth from outer space in 2014.

Notably, the object’s interstellar origin has been verified by the U.S. Department of Defence, and it appears that the Galileo team may have already found a couple of its remnants.

In a June 16 tweet, Hoskinson confirmed he is currently with the expedition team, and noted that so far they have found strange pieces of wire and fragments that could be from the crash.

“Plenty of ground to cover and we haven't even broken out the sluice sled yet,” he said.

In a blog post on the same day, Loeb wrote: “Gladly, we already have one anomaly: a manganese-platinum wire with an abundance pattern that differs from common commercial products.”

Howeve at this stage, it appears to be too early to confirm if the pieces belong to some sort of “interstellar object from our cosmic neighborhood” as Loeb hopes.

“Most importantly, I wish to know whether it was manufactured technologically by another civilization,” he said in a blog post on June 15.

This isn’t the first time Hoskinson has thrown capital behind a quirky project.

Back in March 2022, the Cardano founder participated in a $75 million funding round for Texas-based bioscience startup Colossal, which is aiming to resurrect wooly mammoths and other extinct species.

Charles Hoskinson: Cardano delays due to betting on wrong tech, ambitious roadmap

Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson is optimistic about the future of crypto despite the setbacks, and anticipates a high rate of Cardano adoption in Africa this year.

Charles Hoskinson, the co-founder of Ethereum and founder of Cardano, joins Elisha Owusu Akyaw on episode 14 of Cointelegraph’s Hashing It Out podcast to discuss the current state of crypto and take a deep dive into Cardano. Hoskinson gives his perspective on the recent happenings in the industry,  crypto adoption in Africa and more. He also addresses issues surrounding Cardano, including delayed updates.

The show begins with Hoskinson’s explanation of why there was a need to create Cardano. Hoskinson explains that even though creating a new network involves rebuilding the network effect, it allows you to have an unadulterated vision, which is necessary for what Cardano intends to do. On the current state of the network, Hoskinson acknowledges that it takes time to get things done, with about 85% of the initial roadmap completed:

“It took seven years for Cardano to grow from an idea to an ecosystem. We have already seen some huge wins like the NFT sector.“

The founder of Cardano acknowledges the multichain nature of the industry. Hoskinson says everything is going multichain, even if it starts on Ethereum or Cardano. He believes that to stand out among the various blockchains, you need the right product-market fit, great user experience and a “softer” onboarding process.

Cardano has come under some criticism for continued delays and network updates over the years. Hoskinson attributes these setbacks to “betting on the wrong technology and being a bit ambitious with the roadmap.“

Another area of interest for most followers of the project has been the partnerships and collaborations between Cardano and projects in Africa. Hoskinson elaborated that there are several lessons to be learned after dealing with corruption and geopolitical tensions.

The founder of Cardano said he has concluded that it is more reasonable to deal with companies and individuals rather than governments. He plans to expand Cardano’s reach on the continent from East Africa to West Africa, with Ghana as a prime focus.
