Massive 0,200,000 Whale Transaction Signals Big Price Action Ahead for Ethereum-Based Altcoin: Santiment

Crypto analytics firm Santiment says that a huge whale transaction of Decentraland (MANA) could signal a big price swing for the Ethereum-based metaverse project. Santiment says a whale suddenly moved 256.31 million MANA worth about $190.2 million, one of the largest transactions the network has ever seen. A transaction of this size, Santiment says, generally foreshadows […]

5 altcoins that produced double-digit gains as Bitcoin price rallied in January

Bitcoin’s strong monthly performance translated to outsized gains in APT, GALA, T, MANA and SOL, making them the top performing altcoins in January.

The rally in cryptocurrency markets started in early January with a spike in heavily-shorted altcoins and Ethereum (ETH) liquid staking derivative (LSD) tokens due to the upcoming network upgrade in March. Soon gains started to show across the board as buyers started to play catch up.

The improving macroeconomic conditions, such as reduced inflation and a stable job sector in the United States, provided additional tailwinds for the positive rally. Bitcoin (BTC) is en route to its most impressive closing for January since 2013. Its price has gained 40% year-to-date from the opening value of $16,530.

Another important catalyst for January 2023’s rally was a short squeeze across the crypto market. After the FTX debacle and the lack of bullish narratives for the niche space, most investors expected growth to slow down in 2023.

There are unresolved issues such as potential a Digital Currency Group fallout, geopolitical tension between Russia and Ukraine, and recession risks due to Fed’s aggressive quantitative tightening policies. Thus, most traders didn’t expect strong price rallies so early into the year.

As it turns out, negative sentiment and crowded positions in the futures market continued to fuel more upside. There’s a strong chance of a pullback soon after steep gains. It remains to be seen if the pullback levels are attractive enough for buyers to turn it into a medium-to-long-term bullish trend. Let’s take a look at the top performing cryptocurrencies for January.

Aptos (APT)

Launched in October 2022, Aptos is a relatively new blockchain in the space which leverages the technology of Facebook’s (Meta) discarded project, Libra. It carries significant face value based on its executive team, composed of former Meta engineers, who also built the Move programming language to make the chain scalable and decentralized.

While the project carries much reputation, its fundamentals do not justify the price. The disbelief among investors is part of the reason behind the APT price rally. A market capitalization of $3 billion for a four-month-old project has surprised many onlookers. There’s also suspected market manipulation in the APT/KRW pair on Upbit, giving rise to the Kimchi premium. It is difficult to pinpoint a specific factor driving its demand in South Korea.

APT/USD broke above its previous peak of around $10, recorded around its launch. Technically, the token is in price discovery mode right now. Thus, there are few sell-side resistance levels besides the latest peak of $20 and the psychological level at $25. Unless the positive catalysts in the negative funding rate for perpetual swaps and the Kimchi premium cool off, the rally may still have wings.

The price momentum indicator, Relative Strength Index (RSI), has spiked to oversold territory, suggesting the possibility of a pullback. The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator shows a slight bullish deviation with a less steep rise in the metric compared to the price. Still, the presence of buying volume is reassuring for APT bulls. The support for the token lies at $14.75 and $10.40.

Gala (GALA)

Similar to Aptos, Gala (GALA) also benefited from the excess negative positioning in the futures market. The gain in GALA/USD from $0.02 to $0.07 can be primarily attributed to wipe out of short positions.

The token suffered significant inflation of around 17,123,286 GALA daily, which accounts for around $28.2 million monthly at current prices. It raised concerns that the recent price pump could be short-lived.

On Jan. 25, Gala’s team introduced a new roadmap of the project in which they seek to update the tokenomics to reduce inflation and introduce a new burn mechanism. They are working on an independent Gala chain, where GALA tokens will be used to pay transaction fees.

On top of that, the daily issuance of GALA may also reduce after a vote is passed to change the time-based halving schedule to a supply-based one to bring halving closer than July 203.

The upgrade announcements have added to the buying pressure in GALA/USD, evident in a spike in buying volume. The token is trading above its 200-day exponential moving average at $0.052. If buyers build support above this level, the price can run toward the July 2022 breakdown levels near $0.164.

Threshold (T)

Threshold was born from the merger of two projects, Keep Network and NuCypher, which have combined their technologies to build a decentralized bridge network. Node operators on the Threshold network stake the platform's native token, T and Ether, to validate the transfers between Bitcoin and Ethereum. This technology was borrowed from Keep Network, while NuCypher adds a layer of privacy to the protocol.

In January, the project's native token nearly tripled in price, benefiting from the V2 launch and Coinbase's listing announcements. The upgraded version of the Threshold protocol will enable tBTC (threshold Bitcoin) mints on Ethereum, which are backed by Bitcoin and pegged 1:1 to the BTC price.

The beginning of tBTC mints on Ethereum via Threshold Network will likely increase the network's total locked value, aka TVL, making Threshold nodes more valuable. Initially, the project will launch a semi-decentralized version, Optimistic Minting, and gradually move to a decentralized system of nodes.

There's a significant market opportunity for Threshold after the dissolution of RenBTC. Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) currently commands a dominant share of 93.6% of the total Bitcoin bridged to Ethereum.

Still, the recent 190% increase is starting to show signs of a buy-the-rumor, sell-the-news type of event, especially factoring in the Coinbase-led rise. The support for buyers lies at $0.027, with the next level of resistance at $0.145.

Decentraland (MANA)

The metaverse-themed projects Decentraland (MANA) and The Sandbox (SAND) witnessed a revival of the VR narrative as Apple is rumored to launch its VR headset collection in spring 2023. More recently, the Decentraland’s team released its manifesto for the current year, highlighting a focus on growing its developer and creator community.

While Decentraland is one of the earliest metaverse projects with a massive opportunity to capture the future Web3 market, the present rally is showing overbought characteristics in the short-term.

The RSI indicator shows a reading above its bullish resistance. The MACD indicator shows a divergence with little to no-change in the metric to complement the Jan. 28 surge of 16.5%.

MANA/USD daily price chart. Source: TradingView

Nevertheless, the breakout above 200-day moving average and resistance from the FTX breakdown levels at 0.70 is encouraging for technical buyers. It remains to be seen if the surge was a just stop hunt of short orders or stemming from actual demand. Support for the token lies at the 50-day EMA, current at $0.54, and 2022 lows of $0.27.

Solana (SOL)

Solana (SOL) benefited from excessive negative sentiment around the blockchain’s future. The price rally was a classic case of a short squeeze in the futures market. While the fundamentals pointed towards a death spiral in its price, the market played out the better of sellers. By leveraging low liquidity conditions, buyers were able to push the prices higher until few sellers remained.

The market maker and venture capitalist entity, Alameda Research, was the primary source of liquidity for Solana’s DeFi projects. It was also one of the largest backers of its ecosystem projects. The DeFi community will face significant challenges within Solana due to a lack of liquidity.

Solana developers and the foundation have been working hard to make the network stable and more decentralized. While the network remained stable through the FTX debacle, it appears to have lost the market’s trust thanks to frequent downtimes. Moreover, Alameda/FTX owns around 10.7% of the total supply of SOL, which will likely add to the selling pressure for the next few years.

Their NFT space, while placed second in terms of trading volume across blockchains, is starting to see the departure of top performers like DeGods, y00ts, and most recently, F Studio. It remains to be seen if the community can build back up. The task will be challenging without the support of its most prolific backers.

On long timeframes, the $30 level is a crucial resistance and support level for SOL/USD. If buyers consolidate above this level, the positive momentum in the token’s price will likely stretch into Q1 2023. However, given that the rally is mainly driven by a short-side wipeout in the futures market, there’s a higher likelihood for a significant correction, followed by a period of accumulation, until a meaningful run can take form.

Last but not least, the LSD-narrative tokens deserve a mention in the monthly winners list. The native tokens of Ethereum LSD platforms nearly doubled in price across the board thanks to the upcoming Shanghai upgrade.

The Frax DAO was the highest gainer among LSD tokens, benefiting from a strong rise in the staked Ether on its platform. The platform is able to attract liquidity by providing additional yield on staking ETH through leveraging its position on Curve Finance.

The Frax DAO is the largest owner of CVX tokens, which gives them priority control over Curve emissions. Currently, staking frxETH on Curve earns around 9-10% annual yield, which is two times higher than the average LSD yield of around 4%.

Given that Ethereum’s Shanghai upgrade is still a month away and there’s room for growth of LSD platforms, the attention toward LSD tokens could likely sustain through February.

3 reasons why the MANA and SAND metaverse token rally could end soon

Apple’s rumored VR headset launch appeared to fuel a sharp rally in metaverse tokens, but data suggests that the momentum is not sustainable.

The metaverse hype that began in 2021 dissolved almost entirely by the end of 2022 as the top projects in the space, Decentraland, and The Sandbox, lost 95% of their market capitalization. The most prominent reason for the fall was lack of usage growth

Still, the metaverse narrative is far from dead and will grow in the future. Reportedly, Apple will launch its VR gear sometime in spring 2023. The announcement was a positive catalyst for MANA and SAND, causing a double-digit price surge.

While there’s evidence of positive buying volume supporting the pump, the weak fundamentals of metaverse platforms and overheated market indicators suggest that the price pump risks reversing quickly.

The Apple pump and dump

Facebook's (Meta) foray into the metaverse was one of the most prominent catalysts for metaverse tokens. The idea for Decentraland and The Sandbox's growth is that a decentralized metaverse would flourish more than Meta's centralized version.

However, technology has yet to become popular among the masses. In 2022, the percentage of VR users among Steam gamers was less than 2%, and the usage has yet to grow over the past two years. This is discouraging for the technology's adoption because the gaming sector was the first to embrace it.

The technology suffers from a fundamental issue where VR headsets are unsuitable for long hours. Studies have found that prolonged usage of headsets can cause mental health problems.

Apple's recent VR news caused an uptick in their metaverse tokens, but it doesn't necessarily translate to the success of these projects. Samsung and Oculus, owned by Meta, already have devices in the market, raising the question about the potential impact of Apple's new devices on VR adoption.

Poor usage data hinders the reality of a sustained metaverse token rally

Arguably, metaverse euphoria peaked in the last quarter of the same year when Facebook rebranded to Meta. However, the usage statistics of the two most popular metaverse platforms, Sandbox and Decentraland, remained unimpressive throughout the price surge. Less than 5,000 unique active wallets (UAW) were interacting with the smart contracts at the peak on both platforms.

Decentraland unique wallet addresses interacting with a dapp's smart contracts. Source: DappRadar

Since then, the usage has decreased even further, with less than 1,000 UAWs per day, reflecting terrible fundamentals.

Moreover, while the token prices have jumped, the NFT sales for Sandbox lands haven’t improved with similar prices and volume since the last quarter of 2022. It once again confirms that activity across the platform is uneventful.

Token dilution risks remain

Decentraland is also on the creditor list of Genesis, which filed for bankruptcy last week. According to the court filings, the defunct lending firm owes Decentraland $55 million.

However, according to Decentraland's Discord, Genesis owes only $7.8 million. The community spokesperson added, "The Treasury remains healthy and the credit amount does not represent a substantial part of the Foundation's treasury."

The Genesis issue has been long known; thus, it's possible that the organization might have dissolved the issue by now. However, it will likely affect the pace of its ecosystem growth, which is small, to begin with.

On the other hand, the SAND token suffers from the risk of dilution due to monthly unlocks until the end of Q3 2024. If market conditions do not improve, some investors may be inclined to sell their portion of the tokens.

Despite its shortcomings, as long as there’s a possibility that the technology will become a part of the future. The market is continually going to appreciate the first movers in the space. The problem is long-term visions may not sustain short to medium-term rallies.

MANA/USD daily price chart. Source: TradingView

The sudden spike after days of low volatility has caused the Relative Strength Index (RSI) metric to show overheated readings. The situation becomes more challenging as the price is trading at resistance from the breakdown region of the FTX collapse.

Nansen data shows exchange inflows for MANA and SAND were $8.4 million and $12.6 million, respectively. It suggests that more investors moved to sell than buy into a positive breakout.

Nevertheless, the recent uptick in Decentraland was supported by healthy volume, as reported by data from analytics firm, Santiment, which is encouraging for buyers. But MANA/USD must take out the $0.735 resistance and support area for continued upside.

SAND/USD daily price chart. Source: TradingView

A similar trading set-up for SAND sees resistance for the token around $0.93. If buyers are above the conquer these levels for the metaverse tokens, we can expect the rally to continue. However, based on fundamentals and short-term risks, it remains unlikely if the price can break above the resistance.

Bitcoin price consolidation opens the door for APE, MANA, AAVE and FIL to move higher

BTC could take a break from its sharp rally and if BTC price bounces off underlying support, APE, MANA, AAVE and FIL could breakout.

After nearly a 20% rally last week, Bitcoin (BTC) is on track to end this week with gains of roughly 10%. Bitcoin’s rally has improved sentiment and attracted buying in several altcoins. This sent the total crypto market capitalization firmly above the $1 trillion mark.

The strong recovery in Bitcoin has startled several analysts who remain skeptical about the rally. Some believe that the current rise is a dead cat bounce that will reverse direction sharply while others see similarities between the current rally and the 2018 bear market recovery.

Crypto market data daily view. Source: Coin360

Although traders should be ready for any eventuality, the pace of the rise in Bitcoin does point to a possible major bottom. There are likely to be bumps down the road but the dips are likely to be aggressively purchased by traders.

Bitcoin’s sustained recovery may encourage buying in select altcoins.

Let’s study the charts of Bitcoin and select altcoins that are showing strength in the near term.

BTC/USDT

Bitcoin climbed above the $21,650 overhead resistance on Jan. 20, indicating the resumption of the up-move. This shows that demand remains strong at higher levels.

BTC/USDT daily chart. Source: TradingView

The bulls pushed the price above the $22,800 resistance on Jan. 21 but failed to build upon the breakout as seen from the long wick on the day’s candlestick.

While the upsloping moving averages indicate that bulls are in command, the relative strength index (RSI) in the overbought territory warrants caution. It suggests that a few days of consolidation or minor correction is possible.

However, when a new uptrend starts, the RSI sometimes tends to remain in the overbought zone and frustrates the bears. If that happens, the uptrend may continue without a major pullback and the pair could reach $25,211.

On the downside, the first support is at $21,480. If the price rebounds off this level, it will suggest that the bulls are buying on every minor dip. That could increase the likelihood of a rally to $25,211.

BTC/USDT 4-hour chart. Source: TradingView

The 4-hour chart shows that the bulls are trying to flip the $22,800 level into support. If the price continues higher and soars above $23,271, the bullish momentum could pick up and the pair may rush toward $25,211.

If the price turns down and breaks below $22,600, the pair could slide to the 20-exponential moving average. This level may act as a support but if bears manage to pull the price below it, the next stop could be $21,480.

APE/USDT

ApeCoin (APE) has been range-bound between $7.80 and $3 for the past several months. After the bears failed to sink the price below the range, the bulls are attempting a comeback. They will try to propel the price to the resistance of the range.

APE/USDT daily chart. Source: TradingView

The upsloping moving averages and the RSI in the overbought area suggest that buyers have the upper hand. There is a minor resistance near $6.40 but if buyers bulldoze their way through it, the APE/USDT pair could surge to $7.80. This level may witness aggressive selling by the bears.

The positive view could invalidate in the near term if the price turns down and breaks below the 20-day EMA ($4.80). That could sink the price to the 50-day simple moving average ($4.17).

APE/USDT 4-hour chart. Source: TradingView

The 4-hour chart shows that the pair is in a strong uptrend. The bears are trying to stall the up-move at $6 but a positive sign is that the bulls have not given up much ground. This indicates that every minor dip is being purchased. The bulls will now try to propel the price above $6 and resume the uptrend.

On the contrary, the bears will try to pull the price below the 20-EMA. If they succeed, the pair could attract profit-booking from the short-term bulls. The pair could then tumble to $5.

MANA/USDT

Decentraland (MANA) rallied sharply from $0.28 on Dec. 30 to $0.78 on Jan. 21, which shows strong momentum in favor of the bulls.

MANA/USDT daily chart. Source: TradingView

The bears sold the break above $0.74 on Jan. 17 but the bulls stepped in and bought the dip at $0.61. This shows that the sentiment remains positive and traders are viewing the dips as a buying opportunity.

The bulls will have to sustain the price above $0.74 to signal the start of the next leg of the recovery. The MANA/USDT pair could surge to $0.87 and thereafter to the psychological barrier at $1.

If bears want to gain the upper hand, they will have to sink the price below $0.61. If they do that, the pair could start a deeper correction to $0.53.

MANA/USDT 4-hour chart. Source: TradingView

The 4-hour chart shows the formation of an inverse head and shoulders pattern. If buyers thrust the price above the neckline of the pattern, the setup will complete and the pair could spurt toward the target objective at $0.93.

Contrarily, if the price turns down from the current level and breaks below the moving averages, it will suggest that the bears are fiercely guarding the $0.74 resistance. The pair could then plunge to the $0.61 to $0.55 support zone.

Related: Terra lending protocol Mars to launch mainnet

AAVE/USDT

Aave (AAVE) broke and closed above the downtrend line on Jan. 17 signaling a potential trend change. The bears tried to yank the price back below the downtrend line on Jan. 18 but the bulls held their ground.

AAVE/USDT daily chart. Source: TradingView

The upsloping 20-day EMA ($74) and the RSI in the overbought region suggest that bulls have the edge. This advantage could strengthen further with a break above $92. The AAVE/USDT pair could then rally to the psychologically crucial level of $100.

This level may again pose a strong challenge to buyers but if they overcome this obstacle, the pair could skyrocket toward $115.

Contrary to this assumption, if the price turns down and dives below the downtrend line, it will signal that bears are active at higher levels. The advantage may tilt in favor of the bears on a slide below the 20-day EMA.

AAVE/USDT 4-hour chart. Source: TradingView

The 4-hour chart shows that the bears are defending the zone between $88 and $91 but they haven’t been able to pull the price below the moving averages. This indicates a bullish sentiment where traders are buying the dips.

The bulls will make one more attempt to clear the overhead zone. If they can pull it off, the pair could resume the uptrend.

Instead, if the bulls fail to push the price above $91, the bears will try to tug the pair below the moving averages. The pair could then fall to $78 and later to $73.

FIL/USDT

Filecoin (FIL) broke above the downtrend line on Jan. 14 and held the retest of the breakout level on Jan. 18. This suggests that the bulls have flipped the downtrend line into support.

FIL/USDT daily chart. Source: TradingView

The moving averages have completed a bullish crossover and the RSI is in the overbought space, signaling that bulls are in control. The FIL/USDT pair could rally to $6.50 where the bears may again mount a strong defense. If bulls kick the price above this level, the up-move could reach $9 with a brief halt near $7.

The 20-day EMA ($4.24) is the important support to watch out for on the downside because a drop below it could tilt the advantage in favor of the bears.

FIL/USDT 4-hour chart. Source: TradingView

The bears tried to stall the relief rally at $5 but the bulls pierced this resistance and started the next leg of the recovery. The upsloping moving averages and the RSI in the overbought zone indicate that bulls are firmly in the driver’s seat. Buyers will try to nudge the pair toward $6.50 and then $7.

On the downside, the 20-EMA is the critical support to pay attention to. If the price rebounds off this level, it will indicate that the uptrend remains intact. On the other hand, if bears drag the price below the moving averages, the pair could collapse to $4.20.
