Celebrity-themed crypto tokens had a flash-in-the-pan moment in 2024, with publicly-known figures looking to cash in on their fame amid a steady crypto rally.

But the short-lived “celeb meta” has seen the tokens plummet in value since launch or are down significantly from their peak highs, and their celeb backers have, in some cases, seen their creations possibly land them in court.

Investor lawsuit filed against Hawk Tuah memecoin creators, partners

“The HAWK Token exhibits all the characteristics of an unregistered security under established legal precedent,” litigants claimed.

Investors filed a lawsuit against several entities involved in the launch of the Hawk Tuah (HAWK) memecoin on Dec. 19, alleging that the defendants engaged in the promotion and sale of an unregistered securities offering.

According to the legal filing, the defendants named in the lawsuit include the Tuah The Moon Foundation, OverHere Ltd, Clinton So, and Alex Larson Schultz — who allegedly promoted the memecoin. Attorneys for the plaintiffs wrote:

The Hawk Tuah memecoin surged to a market capitalization of approximately $491 million hours after its launch but plummeted by more than 90% immediately afterward.

YouTube investigator Coffeezilla has called for an end to the spread of misinformation about viral influencer Hailey Welch’s recent controversial memecoin launch, HAWK.

YouTube investigator Stephen Findeisen, better known as “Coffeezilla,” has called for an end to the spread of misleading headlines about viral influencer Hailey Welch, also known as "Hawk Tuah," following the controversial launch of her memecoin, HAWK.

“Can yall stop these insane headlines. She didn’t rug for 500M and she didn’t profit $50M,” Coffezilla said in a Dec. 6 X post to his 638,900 followers. 

Coffeezilla claimed that the team behind the memecoin “presold a few million” to strategic advisors who allegedly “sold early,” before the tokens “got sniped.”
