US government says funds from 2016 hack should return to Bitfinex

Due to a prior reimbursement plan from Bitfinex, many victims of the 2016 hack do not legally qualify as victims eligible for reimbursement.

Attorneys for the US government recently submitted a motion requesting that the Bitcoin (BTC) forfeited as a result of the 2016 Bitfinex hack should be returned to the cryptocurrency exchange.

The Jan. 14 legal filing stipulated the return of approximately 94,643 BTC and unspecified amounts of Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Bitcoin Satoshi Vision (BSV) and Bitcoin Gold (BTG) generated through hard forks back to the exchange on an in-kind basis.

Ilya Lichtenstein and his wife Heather Morgan, aka Razzlekhan, were both arrested in 2022 and later convicted for the 2016 hack of the Bitfinex exchange, which resulted in the theft of 119,754 BTC.

Heather Morgan criticized the financial system in a rap video while also asking for the world’s richest man, Elon Musk, to save her.

Convicted money launderer Heather Morgan has released a bizarre rap video as her alter ego “Razzlekhan” just days before starting her 18-month prison stint for her role in the infamous Bitfinex hack.

In a self-described “sexy” but “cringe” music video on Jan. 10 titled Razzlekhan vs The United States, Morgan appeared in front of a government building wearing fishnet tights and bondage gear and referenced her recent legal troubles, criticized the financial system and asked Elon Musk to save her.

“Weird enough to catch a case, they think I’m from outer space,” Morgan raps in the opening lines of the song while clearly wearing an ankle monitor.

Heather Morgan has argued for no more jail time for her role in laundering some of the 120,000 Bitcoin stolen from Bitfinex by her husband Ilya Lichtenstein.

Heather Morgan, also known as the rapper “Razzlekhan,” has asked to avoid more prison time ahead of her sentencing for her role in laundering the Bitcoin her husband stole from the crypto exchange Bitfinex.

“Ms. Morgan has proven herself worthy of a second chance, and we respectfully ask this Court to give her that chance by imposing a sentence of time served,” Morgan’s lawyers asked a Washington, DC, federal court in an Oct. 31 filing.

They added she was subject to “difficult conditions” in her week-long pretrial incarceration — having to recover from surgery and getting COVID-19 — and, since her release in mid-February 2022, had “complied fully with the restrictive terms of pretrial release.”
