Is Bitcoin’s negative futures funding rate a sign of an upcoming BTC price crash?

Bitcoin bears celebrate as demand for leveraged long positions hits a six-month low, but crypto traders on X think it's time to go long.

On April 18, Bitcoin (BTC) futures contracts exhibited significant demand for short (sell) positions, sparking speculations of further bearish momentum. This trend was influenced by the lack of inflows into spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and the expectations of rising interest rates in the U.S., all contributing to a negative market sentiment.

Retail traders often favor perpetual futures, a type of derivative that closely mirrors the price movements of regular spot markets. To maintain balanced risk exposure, exchanges implement a fee every eight hours, known as the funding rate.

This rate turns positive when buyers (longs) demand more leverage, and negative when sellers (shorts) seek additional leverage. Typically, a neutral funding rate is around 0.025 per 8-hour period or 0.5% weekly. Conversely, negative funding rates, though infrequent, are seen as highly bearish indicators.

Crypto fund outflows reach nearly half a billion over 9 weeks — CoinShares

Crypto investment products have seen over $450 million in cumulative outflows over the past nine weeks.

Outflows from crypto exchange-traded products (ETPs) reached $455 million over the previous nine weeks, according to a report from asset manager CoinShares. Outflows from ETPs generally indicate negative sentiment toward cryptocurrencies.

Crypto exchange-traded products are designed to track crypto prices. When shares of these funds fall below their target prices, they sell off cryptocurrencies, causing outflows.

The week leading up to Sept. 18 saw outflows of $54 million — capping off nine weeks in which only a single week saw inflows. Bitcoin (BTC) saw the biggest drawdown from all exchange-traded products and was responsible for 85% of all outflows from these funds. Last week, over $45 million worth of Bitcoin was sold into the market by ETPs.

Ether (ETH) funds were also not spared in the deluge of selling. They saw outflows of approximately $5 million last week.

Despite these outflows, a few ETPs representing altcoins did well last week. Solana (SOL) ETPs saw net inflows of $700,000, Cardano (ADA) gained $430,000 and XRP (XRP) added $130,000.

CoinShares also provided data about the regional origin of crypto ETP outflows. The United States was responsible for 77% of the outflows, with Germany, Canada and Sweden also having caused a sizable percentage of the outflows.

Crypto ETPs offer an easier way for investors with traditional financial accounts to invest in digital assets. However, the issuance of a spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund has faced numerous regulatory and legal barriers in the United States. In March, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) denied VanEck’s proposal for a Bitcoin Trust. On Aug. 11, a U.S. federal appeals court ruled that the SEC had been “arbitrary and capricious” in denying a Bitcoin ETP proposal from Grayscale.

Crypto investors cool on Bitcoin funds, turning to Ether and XRP

Bitcoin-related funds saw outflows of $13 million over the past week, reversing five weeks of bullish inflows, according to Coinshares analyst James Butterfill.

Bitcoin-related investment products appear to have lost some of their sheen among crypto investors, recording its first week of outflows since Blackrock filed for spot Bitcoin ETF in June.

According to a July 24 report by CoinShares’ head of research, James Butterfill, Bitcoin (BTC) investment products saw outflows of $13 million for the week ending July 21, reversing five weeks of inflows.

Short Bitcoin products also saw outflows of $5.5 million in the week.

In contrast, Ethereum (ETH) and XRP (XRP) investment products recorded combined inflow of $9.2 million over the last week.

Butterfill noted that Ethereum investment products were the best performer last week with inflows of $6.6 million, while XRP funds recorded an inflow of $2.6 million. Other altcoins, such as Solana (SOL) and Polygon (MATIC) tracked inflows of $1.1 million and $0.7 million respectively.

The apparent change of heart follows Ripple’s partial victory against the United States Securities and Exchange Commission on July 13, where the court ruled that XRP isn’t a security when sold on exchanges to the general public.

The news spiked XRP’s price up 76% to $0.83 before cooling off to $0.69 at the time of writing.

Bitcoin however still remains the dominant digital asset investment product, with $558 million in inflows so far in 2023 and a total of $25.0 billion in assets under management — amounting to 67.4% of the total market share.

BTC is currently priced at $29,128, down 3.1% over the last 24 hours.

Over the last month, a host of financial institutions have filed for Bitcoin spot Exchange Traded Fund applications with the SEC since mid-June, including BlackRock, ARK Invest, Fidelity, Galaxy Digital, VanEck, Valkyrie Investments, NYDIG, SkyBridge and WisdomTree.

Multichain MPC bridge sees $100M+ outflows, sparking fears of exploit

Some Multichain contracts on Ethereum suffered withdrawals of more than half of their deposits, causing on-chain sleuths to fear an exploit is underway.

Abnormally large outflows from the Multichain MPC bridge platform on July 6 have sparked fears that an exploit could be underway. Over $102 million worth of crypto has been withdrawn from Multichain’s Fantom bridge on the Ethereum side, as well as $666,000 from Dogechain and $5 million from Moonriver.

On July 6, 7,214 Wrapped Ether (WETH) tokens (worth $13.6 million), 1,024 Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) (worth $31 million) and $58 million worth of US Dollar Coin (USDC) were withdrawn from the Fantom bridge’s Ethereum smart contract, with a total of approximately $102 million in cryptocurrency withdrawn.

In addition, the Dogechain bridge’s Ethereum contract saw a withdrawal of $666,000, which represented more than 86% of its total deposits, leaving only around $100,000 worth of assets remaining in the bridge. $5,872,661 worth of USDC and Tether (USDT) were withdrawn from the Multichain Moonriver bridge contracts on Ethereum, leaving only around $700,000 remaining on it.

Several on-chain sleuths took to Twitter to label the event as a possible exploit. Blockchain security firm Peckshield tagged the Multichain team in a post showing the Fantom bridge transactions, saying “You may want to take a look.”

This led one commenter to remark that it looks like “another massive hack.” On-chain investigator Spreek posted the Dogechain transactions with the comment “dogechain multichain drained.”

Cointelegraph could not confirm by the time of publication whether the contracts were “drained” or whether a large amount of funds were simply withdrawn by users.

Cointelegraph reached out to the Multichain team on their Discord channel, but did not get a response by the time of publication. Multichain's last post on Twitter was June 29.

Multichain is a multi-party computation (MPC) bridging network. When a user wants to bridge assets from one chain to another, the Multichain network first confirms that the assets have been locked on the first chain and then mints derivative assets on the second chain.

When a withdrawal is made, the network goes through this process in reverse: it first confirms that the derivative coins have been destroyed on the second chain, then releases the assets backing them on the first chain.

The Multichain team claims that the cryptographic keys controlling this process are split into multiple shards and distributed throughout the network. This should theoretically prevent any single person or group from being able to make unauthorized withdrawals.

Multichain has been suffering from unspecified technical problems over the past few weeks. On May 31, the team announced that their CEO had gone missing and they were experiencing “multiple issues due to unforeseeable circumstances,” leading to delayed transactions. On July 5, Binance halted withdrawals of some Multichain derivative tokens due to the network failing to process transactions in a timely manner.

Bitcoin remains ‘primary focus’ for investors amid year highs: CoinShares

Bitcoin investment products have experienced $310.6 million in inflows over the last two weeks.

Bitcoin (BTC) has been the “primary focus” for institutional investors over the last two weeks, according to Coinshares, as the cryptocurrency continues to hit new prihighs for 2023.

In a July 3 report from CoinShares’ Head of Research James Butterfill, the analyst noted that Bitcoin-related products saw $310.6 million of inflows over the last two weeks, representing the vast majority of crypto product inflows.

“Bitcoin remained the primary focus of investors [...] with the last 2 weeks inflows representing 98% of all digital asset flows,” said Butterfill.

The last two weeks of inflows are a reversal from the previous nine consecutive weeks of outflows. Short Bitcoin products also experienced a minor outflow of $0.9 million over the last week.

It’s the second time this year that Bitcoin products have accounted for 98% of inflows into cryptocurrency investment products, and comes amid a surge in Bitcoin’s price and dominance.

Much of this surge has been pinned on BlackRock’s June 15 spot Bitcoin ETF application, followed by similar filings from the likes of Fidelity, Invesco, Wisdom Tree and Valkyrie.

Since the filing, the price of Bitcoin has increased 25.2% to $31,131 at the time of writing. Bitcoin's dominance — which is a measure of its market cap relative to the total market cap of all cryptocurrencies — has risen to 51.46%, according to data.

Meanwhile, Ethereum investment products inflows came in at $2.7 million last week, the second week of inflows that have reversed a lengthy outflow trend.

Speaking to Cointelegraph on June 26, Fireblocks CEO Michael Shaulov said there has been a “fair amount of interest” from institutional investors in core assets such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, but less so in alternate cryptocurrencies.

“The narrative around Ethereum is pretty much the understanding that future ecosystems of tokenizeation are likely to be EVM-based. And if they’re EVM based, then Ethereum is going to play out as utility.”

Shaulov said the narrative around Bitcoin has been less specific, but notes that most investors see the need to hold the cryptocurrency.
