Altcoin Roundup: Three layer-1 protocols see inflows amid choppy, volatile market conditions

Ethereum competitors make inroads into DeFi as the total value locked and on-chain protocols continue to rise for these layer-1s.

Layer-1 (L1) protocols are the foundation of the decentralized application ecosystem, with the Ethereum network dominating the landscape in terms of the number of protocols launched on-chain and total value locked (TVL), followed by BNB Chain and Fantom.

As the sideways market of 2022 drags on and serious projects use the time away from the frenzy of bull markets to work on development, several L1 protocols have been outperforming the field and making gains despite weakness in the wider crypto market.

Here’s a look at three L1 protocols that are seeing growth in their decentralized finance (DeFi) communities and an influx of TVL on their networks.

Waves

Waves is a multi-purpose blockchain protocol that was originally launched in 2016 and has since undergone several transformations along the path to Waves 2.0.

The Waves ecosystem has experienced tremendous growth over the past month, with the protocol’s TVL increasing from $700.95 million on Feb. 4 to a new record high of $2.77 billion on March 18, according to data from DefiLlama.

The network’s increased TVL has largely been attributed to gains on the algorithmic price-stable “assetization protocol” Neutrino, which creates stablecoins tied to real-world assets, cryptocurrencies and the non-custody liquidity protocol Vires Finance.

During the aforementioned period of Feb. 4 through March 15, the price of Waves surged 278% from a low of $8.17 to a high of $31.04, suggesting that interest in the Waves ecosystem has been increasing on multiple fronts.

Oasis

Oasis is a privacy-enabled L1 blockchain network that focuses on offering high throughput and low transaction fees in a secure manner.

The Oasis network got off to a quick start in terms of TVL when its first decentralized exchange, YuzuSwap, launched in early January and quickly amassed more than $160 million in liquidity. However, the TVL would quickly fall through late February, reaching $65.18 million.

After an initial period of volatility, Oasis’ TVL has climbed to a new high of $194.92 million, thanks in large part to the rise of the ValleySwap automated market maker protocol, which has seen its TVL climb to $125.5 million in March.

Cosmos ecosystem chains

A third chain that is having a big impact on the DeFi sector is Cosmos and its Interblockchain Communication protocol. Cosmos’ TVL is understated, as most data providers don’t track the chains in the Cosmos ecosystem in the same way they track Ethereum.

Some of the most notable gains in TVL over the past month have come on chains that are part of the Cosmos ecosystem, including Terra, Cronos and THORChain.

As mentioned in a previous Altcoin Roundup, a significant portion of the growth seen on Terra has come via inflows to the Anchor protocol, which is responsible for minting the TerraUSD (UST) stablecoin.

These inflows have increased Anchor’s TVL by 54.58% to $13.57 billion, which also boosted Terra’s overall TVL to $26.34 billion on March 10.

Cronos is a blockchain network that arose out of the Crypto.com ecosystem when the project rebranded in November 2021. As part of this process, Crypto.com’s CRO token was rebranded to Cronos.

Since its unveiling, the Cronos network has had a total of 48 protocols launch on-chain or establish cross-chain integrations, which raised the network’s TVL to an all-time high of $3.19 billion on March 18.

Cronos’ TVL spike occurred during a period where the value of CRO declined 32% from a high of $0.54 on Feb. 10 to a low of $0.372 on March 15, suggesting the value added to the ecosystem came from new assets migrating or launching on-chain.

VVS Finance had previously been reported as the main DeFi protocol on Cronos, but it has actually seen its TVL fall by 4.78% over the past month. Instead, the recent increase in Cronos’ TVL largely comes from MM Finance, Tectonic and MM Optimizer.

The final shoutout to blockchain networks in the Cosmos ecosystem goes to THORChain, a decentralized liquidity protocol focused on cross-chain interoperability.

Thanks to several factors, including the recently added support for “synthetic assets” and its upcoming mainnet launch, activity in THORChain’s ecosystem has been on the rise, with its TVL climbing from $167 million to $267.65 million between March 1–16.

The total value locked on these three protocols, combined with that of the top Cosmos-based decentralized exchange, Osmosis, gives the Cosmos ecosystem a total TVL of more than $30.25 billion. This makes Cosmos the second-ranked blockchain network by TVL behind Ethereum.

The expanding Cosmos: Here’s why Osmosis (OSMO) hit a new all-time high

Aggregate trading volumes and TVL in the Cosmos ecosystem are lifting the same metrics at Osmosis DEX, resulting in OSMO price hitting new all-time highs.

Crypto assets within the Cosmos ecosystem have been on a run since the start of 2022, thanks to an intensified focus on brokering cross-chain compatibility with other blockchains. One decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol that has benefited from the current expansion plans is Osmosis (OSMO).

Osmosis is the first decentralized exchange (DEX) servicing projects connected through the Interblockchain Communication Protocol (IBC) and data from Cointelegraph Markets Pro show OSMO price surged 123% from a low of $4.05 on Dec. 17 to a new all-time high at $9.24 on Jan. 7.

OSMO/USD 1-day chart. Source: CoinGecko

Three reasons for the price growth seen in OSMO include a surge in trading volume on the DEX, a record high in the total value locked on the protocol and the release of cross-chain bridges that connect the Cosmos (ATOM) ecosystem with other Ethereum (ETH) Virtual Machine (EVM) compatible networks.

Trading volume surges

One of the biggest factors helping drive the price of OSMO has been the significant increase in trading volume on the exchange. According to data from Token Terminal, trading volume hit a record high of $186.8 million on Jan. 7 and a new all-time high was set on the same day.

The spike in trading volume and token price briefly resulted in Osmosis becoming the third ranked DEX by market capitalization as highlighted in the following tweet from Twitter user Jimmy Yang.

Other factors that have helped bolster the price of OSMO as trading volume increased include the fact that more than 81 million OSMO are currently staked on the network, according to data from SmartStake. Furthermore, a large portion of the supply is also being used to provide liquidity in the various liquidity pools offered on Osmosis.

Total value locked on the rise

A second development laying out the bullish case for OSMO has been the steady increase in total value locked on the protocol, which hit a record $1.21 billion on Jan. 11, according to data from Defi Llama.

The climbing TVL comes as multiple tokens in the Cosmos ecosystem hit new highs. Notably, ATOM, which is the most recognizable asset from Cosmos, hit a daily high of $43.64 on Jan. 7, which is just a dollar below its all-time high. Osmosis' second native token, ION, also hit a new high at $16,500 on Jan. 11.

Related: 3 reasons why Cosmos (ATOM) price is near a new all-time high

Cross-chain ease the burden for traders

A third reason for the bullish turn in OSMO is the increased attention Cosmos has directed toward EVM compatibility and cross-chain bridges.

Evmos is a current project in development that is working on becoming the first IBC-compatible EVM-based chain and it is currently supporting ERC-20 tokens on its testnet.

Injective, a L1 protocol, has also revealed that is developing cross-chain bridges for Cosmos-based projects and it is currently working on support for OSMO.

As cross-chain bridges come online and allow tokens from other EVM-compatible networks to bridge into the Cosmos Hub, Osmosis has the potential to see further increases in trading volume and TVL simply because it is the main DEX for the Cosmos ecosystem at this time. If this were to occur, there's also the possibility that OSMO price could appreciate further.

Chainlink’s total value secured surpasses $75B as DeFi continues to surge

The oracle network’s exponential growth has been tied to the emergence of DeFi. Co-founder Sergey Nazarov said Chainlink is also powering metaverses.

The total value secured by the Chainlink network has officially surpassed $75 billion, marking a new milestone for the decentralized oracle solution that has become synonymous with price data services for the rapidly growing DeFi sector.

With the milestone, Chainlink has become “one of the most value securing forms of decentralized consensus on the planet,” according to protocol co-founder Sergey Nazarov. Chainlink is also one of the fastest-growing networks in all of crypto, with smart contract value secured growing by a factor of ten since last year.

Chainlink, which is comprised of independent oracle nodes, has seen rapid uptake across several leading blockchains, including Ethereum, Binance Smart Chain and Avalanche. DeFi applications built on these and other blockchains use Chainlink oracle networks to power their smart contracts, bringing market data to on-chain financial applications.

Related: Associated Press plans to launch Chainlink node to publish data

Since debuting its mainnet in May 2019, Chainlink has launched over 700 oracle networks, which have secured over 600 million data points across ten blockchains. As Cointelegraph reported in July, the oracle network has onboarded an average of 1.4 new partners each day in 2021.

Demand for oracle services has grown exponentially with the arrival of DeFi, or decentralized finance. Measured by total value locked, or TVL, the DeFi sector is currently worth over $253 billion. The industry was virtually non-existent when Chainlink launched its mainnet two-and-a-half years ago.

When asked about the growth of “metaverse” technology, which was punctuated by Facebook’s total rebranding to Meta, Sergey Nazarov told Cointelegraph that Chainlink “already powers multiple Metaverse applications across DeFi, NFTs and gaming.” He further explained:

“We fully expect smart contracts to power the new relationships being formed in the metaverse, especially since these relationships need to be inherently trustless, due to the new level of identity that the metaverse makes possible.”

Related: Axie Infinity, Decentraland and ‘metaverse’ cryptos rally after Facebook rebrands to Meta

As Nazarov explained, Chainlink is using the Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol, or CCIP, to connect various universes. CCIP “will use Chainlink oracles to enable users to move digital assets and execute smart contracts across the various chains used throughout the metaverse,” he said, adding:

“I anticipate the trustless metaverse does require trustless data, trustless off-chain compute and the ability to utilize multiple chains, all of which Chainlink is being heavily relied upon for already.”

Altcoin Roundup: Time to rotate! Data suggests traders are shifting from NFTs to DeFi

Timing the market is near impossible, but these five metrics can help traders identify when a sector rotation is underway.

An important part of preserving investing profits is knowing when an asset or sector is showing signs of exhaustion and when a sector rotation is underway.

This is especially important in the rapidly moving cryptocurrency markets, which can change direction in a heartbeat and turn crypto millionaires into depressed bag holders.

Most investors know that the nonfungible token (NFT) sector has been on fire since July, and as CryptoPunks, Mutant Ape Yacht Club and pet EtherRock NFTs fetched six- and seven-figure sums, while top NFT marketplace OpenSea surpassed $4 billion in total sales. While the frenzy has been exciting, many new projects have launched across a variety of blockchain networks, and the recent decline in transaction volumes could be a signal that investors are looking to move to different pastures.

In the first quarter of 2021, decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols and their related tokens were the focal points for investors, but this sector cooled off in March as the NFT market underwent its first bull market. Now it appears that the tide has begun to change, and the profits made from NFT trading could be making their way back into altcoins and DeFi markets.

Here are five signs that a capital rotation might be underway from NFTs into the DeFi sector.

Large- and small-cap DeFi tokens rally

DeFi Perp is an index token on the FTX cryptocurrency exchange that comprises a basket of 25 of the top DeFi-related cryptocurrencies, including Maker (MKR), Polkadot’s DOT, Solana (SOL), Curve DAO Token (CRV), Uniswap (UNI) and SushiSwap (SUSHI).

Data from TradingView shows that the price of DeFi Perp has been on the rise since bottoming out at $5,331 on July 20, and it has since rallied 138% to a daily high at $12,771 on Sept. 2.

DEFIPERP 1-day chart. Source: TradingView

The surging price of DeFi Perp back to the $12,500 support and resistance level, which is shown to be an important level during the rally between February and May in 2021, is a sign that funds are beginning to flow back into the DeFi ecosystem just as the daily trading volumes and price floors for NFTs are on the decline.

NFT prices are cooling off

Since rapidly rising NFT prices have been the main feature catching the public’s attention, it is also a red flag and a good metric for judging the overall health of the sector. As shown in the chart below, which tracks the daily average price floor of NFTs sold in the market, the average price floor reached a high of 1.02 Ether (ETH) on Aug. 29 and has since pulled back to 0.5 ETH.

The fact that NFTs are selling for less or that new high-volume projects are selling at lower prices could be a sign that the market may be becoming saturated and that the momentum is beginning to wane.

Active users and transactions on DeFi platforms surge

Another sign that the DeFi ecosystem continues to grow is the steadily increasing number of DeFi users over time, as shown below in data from Dune Analytics.

Total DeFi users over time. Source: Dune Analytics

New users interacting with protocols are likely attracted to the steady yields and no-hassle token staking, and Cointelegraph has reported that investors from traditional finance are also deeply interested in what DeFi has to offer.

While this metric tracks the number of unique wallet addresses that interact with DeFi protocols and it’s possible that some users have multiple addresses, the situation has become more complicated in recent times. The longer-term nature of earning a yield in DeFi via staking, providing liquidity or locking tokens on protocols has arguably led to a decline in users switching between multiple wallets and paying high gas fees to constantly move assets.

The continued entrance of new users into the DeFi space could signal that some who have made profits in NFTs are now looking to lock in profits and earn a yield, while newcomers to the market are attracted to its lower-risk opportunities.

$4,000 ETH signals a rotation in play

Another development that could signal a sector rotation toward DeFi is the rising price of Ether.

ETH/USDT 4-hour chart. Source: TradingView

Data from Cointelegraph Markets Pro and TradingView shows that the price of Ether has rallied 125% since reaching a low of $1,706 on July 20, with its most recent surge of 23% pushing its price from $3,134 on Aug. 30 to a high at $4,029 on Sept. 3.

With most of the top DeFi protocols located on Ethereum, the top altcoin is one of the main assets in the DeFi ecosystem and is widely used to stake and purchase other tokens.

Related: Is Ethereum’s rally signaling the next bull market phase for Bitcoin above $50K?

DeFi TVL hits a new all-time high

A final metric that indicates that a sector rotation into DeFi is underway is the total value locked (TVL) on all DeFi protocols. On Sept. 2, the figure reached a new record high of $171.5 billion.

Total value locked in DeFi. Source: Defi Llama

Previous surges in TVL were in large part due to increases in Bitcoin and Ether prices, but the current push comes as both tokens trade well below their 2021 highs, indicating that the rise in TVL has more to do with the rising value of DeFi tokens and the increased use of stablecoins.

While the NFT boom might not be over, multiple data points suggest that the bullish momentum has reached an exhaustion point, and the current run-up in altcoin and DeFi prices is a signal that a rotation is in its early stages.

Fantom price gains 100% after launching a 370M FTM incentive program

FTM gained 500% in the past 6 weeks and a newly launched $320 million incentive program could see the rally extend further.

The Ethereum (ETH) network continues to enjoy the status of being the top smart contract platform in the blockchain industry, but the competition is slowly gaining market share because high costs and network congestion are still challenges for the protocol.

One project that has been gaining traction in the month of August is Fantom (FTM), a layer-one smart contract platform that utilizes a directed acyclic graph architecture as a means to solving the problems of slow transaction speeds and high transaction fees.

Data from Cointelegraph Markets Pro and TradingView shows that since hitting a low of $0.15 on July 20, the price of FTM has rocketed 500% to an intraday high at $0.90 on Aug. 30 as its 24-hour trading volume exploded by 1,250% to a record $1.26 billion.

FTM/USDT 4-hour chart. Source: TradingView

Three reasons for the surging momentum in Fantom include the launch of a 370 million FTM incentive program, a significant increase in social media engagement and the continued increase in the amount of value locked on the protocol.

Fantom launches a liquidity incentive program

The biggest momentum boost for Fantom came on Aug. 30 with the announcement of a 370 million FTM incentive program ($320 million), designed to attract new protocols and liquidity to the Fantom ecosystem.

Under the program, developers who launch on the Fantom network will be able to apply for rewards from the Fantom Foundation and will receive between 1 million to 5 million FTM depending on the total value locked (TVL) in the protocol in question.

In order to qualify for rewards, a protocol must maintain a TVL above a time-weighted average (TWA) of $5,000,000 or $100,000,000 for an extended period of time. If at any point the TWA falls below the $5,000,000 minimum, threward distribution will be paused until the TVL once again reaches the required minimum.

Social media engagements surge in August

The building momentum for Fantom was registered by social media metrics from Lunar Crush throughout the month of August. The platform showed a 34% increase in social media mentions when compared to the month of July and social media engagements also shot up by nearly 96%.

On-chain data for the network also shows a steadily increasing rate of engagement because the network now has 415,000 unique addresses that conduct more than 300,000 transactions per day.

These numbers could significantly increase in the weeks and months ahead thanks to the release of the FTM incentive program, which has already lead to a new record high in the number of transactions on the Fantom bridge.

Related: This service is declaring that it's “crypto altseason” again

Significant gains in DeFi

The third reason for Fantom’s explosive growth is the increasing TVL of its DeFi ecosystem which is led by SpookySwap exchange ($192 million TVL).

According to data from DeFi Llama, the total value locked on the Fantom blockchain has now surpassed $657 million with a 19.52% increase coming over the last 24-hours.

Total value locked on Fantom. Source: DeFi Llama

As seen in the chart above, the launch of the Fantom Incentive Program helped spark a significant rally in the TVL on Fantom, but the network was already seeing impressive gains in the metric even before the launch of the program.

Between Aug. 4 and Aug. 23, Fantom's TVL increased from $269 million to a high of $510 million without any special incentives. This proves that interest in interacting with the platform has been on the rise for multiple weeks.
