Solana Name Service unveils major rebrand: A new era for .sol domains

The Solana Name Service (SNS), formerly known as Bonfida, has embarked on a new chapter with a strategic rebrand aimed at redefining digital identities on the Solana blockchain. This transition marks a significant shift in decentralized identity management and highlights the project’s growing influence in the Web3 space.

Launched three years ago by a team of visionary developers and supported with a grant from the Solana Foundation, the initiative has evolved from Bonfida to SNS. This rebrand reflects SNS’s commitment to enhancing the infrastructure necessary for a decentralized domain name service. Extensive feedback from .sol domain holders and the broader Solana community prompted a strategic rebrand of the Solana Name Service, indicating strong demand for a brand that better represents the expansive capabilities of the service.

“SNS aligns with our identity as a foundational infrastructure on the Solana blockchain and enhances the visibility of the .sol domains across the Web3 landscape,” stated the SNS team.

SNS has achieved significant milestones that underscore its pivotal role within the Solana ecosystem. The service boasts over 115 partnerships with various protocols and communities, and has registered over 247,000 domain names worldwide, demonstrating its extensive adoption and utility. The ecosystem token, $FIDA, offers discounts on domain registrations and supports grants for partners to expand the platform’s capabilities. Recently, Pyth Network DAO selected SNS to provide ‘pyth.sol’ subdomain services, reinforcing its status as a leading domain name provider on Solana.

In an open letter to the .sol community, the SNS team shared their broader vision:

“With this rebrand, we reaffirm our commitment to the Solana ecosystem, positioning SNS as the fundamental infrastructure for all users’ on-chain identities. Our mission will not be complete until every public key has a corresponding .sol domain, every developer can seamlessly use SNS, and we become the number one blockchain name service.
