BTC miner Core Scientific gets interim nod for $37.4M bankruptcy loan

The loan would allow Core Scientific to keep its mining and hosting operations afloat while it restructures.

A U.S. bankruptcy court has granted Bitcoin (BTC) miner Core Scientific interim approval to access a $37.5 million loan from existing creditors to fund the firm amid its liquidity issues.

Core Scientific is one of the largest cryptocurrency mining companies in the United States, but filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Dec. 21 as a result of rising energy costs, declining revenue and the price of BTC in 2022.

In a public statement made on that same day, Core Scientific outlined that it intends to “move swiftly through the restructuring process” and maintain its self-mining and hosting operations.

The loan comes from a group of creditors called the Ad Hoc Noteholder Group — which holds more than 50% of Core Scientific’s convertible notes — which agreed to provide debtor-in-possession (DIP) facility commitment loans up to a total of $75 million, according to court filings.

The firm’s application was approved on Dec. 22 and court filings show that the DIP loan will have a 10% per annum interest rate attached.

Core Scientific will be able to access $37.5 million immediately to keep the lights on, while it intends to apply to access the remaining $37.5 million in January as per a Dec. 23 report from Reuters, citing a company attorney.

In the initial DIP budget however, it was forecasted to apply for $12.5 million by Jan. 21.

The Reuters report also suggests the creditors understand the challenges of the bear market and are looking at a long-term play with Core Scientific.

Kris Hansen, a representative of the creditors, told the news outlet that the existing stakeholders “have faith” in the company’s future despite its recent troubles.

In its Q3 financial report, Core Scientific reported having $1.4 billion worth of assets and $1.33 billion worth of liabilities as of Sept. 30, showing a tight balance sheet amid the bull market.

Notably, the firm reports a loss of $434.8 million in Q3 which when added to losses from the previous two quarters, witht total losses reaching $1.71 billion so far this year. As such, the firm indicated in late November that it was most likely heading towards bankruptcy without a fresh injection of cash.

The firm has reportedly mined almost 12,000 BTC this year, marking a significant improvement on the 5,769 BTC mined in 2021, however that of course has not been able to save Core Scientific from its financial woes.

BTC mining firm Compute North files for bankruptcy

Compute North’s hosting partners Compass Mining have stated that the firm will continue to operate business as usual at this stage.

Bitcoin (BTC) mining hosting firm Compute North has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy, amid growing pressure on the firm due to the effects of crypto winter and rising energy costs. The firm’s CEO Dave Perrill has also stepped down but will remain on the board.

The company submitted a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas on Sept. 22, which is now pending before Judge David Jones.

Under a Chapter 11 filing, the firm is still able to keep its operations going as it works out a plan to repay creditors. The filing reportedly outlines that Compute North owes around $500 million to 200 creditors, while its assets are said to be worth between $100 million and $500 million.

Compute North offers large scale crypto mining hosting services and facilities, hardware and a BTC mining pool. It is one of the largest data center providers in the U.S. has big name partners in the BTC mining sector such as Compass Mining and Marathon Digital.

Both companies have come out with statements via Twitter, noting that with the information they have at this stage, their business operations will continue as normal.

“Compute North’s staff informed us today that the bankruptcy filing should not disrupt business operations. We are continuing to monitor the situation and will provide further updates as they become available,” noted Compass Mining.

The bearish performance of BTC in 2022 has had a significant impact on the mining sector this year, and in the context of Texas, rising energy costs and multiple power outages during intense heat waves haven’t helped either.

Bloomberg Business reporter David Pan highlighted on Twitter that Compute North may have been impacted by a costly delay to a large mining facility in Texas that it wasn’t able to monetize for months.

“Compute North’s massive 280MW mining facility in TX was supposed to run rigs in April but it couldn’t due to pending approvals. From then to later this year when it finally was able to energize the machines, Bitcoin prices had gone through multiple downward cycles, fundraising opportunities dried up and major lenders scaled back,” he wrote.

Compute North adds to a long list of crypto firms that have either fallen victim to crypto winter — or in some cases helped create it — including Voyager Digital, Three Arrows Capital, Celsius Network and BlockFi to name a few.

Genesis Digital Assets announces new data center in Texas

Genesis Digital Assets' new Bitcoin Texan mining center will have a capacity of 300 megawatts.

Major U.S.-based Bitcoin (BTC) mining firm Genesis Digital Assets is building a new data center in West Texas.

According to the firm’s Nov.1 announcement, the new industrial-scale BTC mining data center will have a capacity of 300 megawatts and will operate using unspecified “sustainable infrastructure.” Its energy will be sourced from the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT).

As part of the announcement, Genesis co-founder and executive chairman Abdumalik Mirakhmedov emphasized that “sustainability” is a key part of the firm’s plans for “rapid expansion.”

ERCOT supplies more than 26 million customers in Texas with electricity. As of April this year, 42% of its energy supply was sourced from wind and solar.

Genesis is one of the largest Bitcoin miners in the U.S., with the firm estimating it has mined more than $1 billion worth of BTC since its launch in 2013. As of October 2021, Genesis' data centers represented an operational capacity exceeding 170 megawatts or a total hash rate of 3.8 exahashes per second (EH/s).

The firm has outlined that another 9.4 EH/s will go “online during the next 12 months,” with the company aiming to surpass a total capacity of 1.4 gigawatts by the end of 2023. Genesis estimates it represented 2.4% of the Bitcoin network’s total hashing power during September.
