Nifty News: Gucci to drop Otherside pendants, Jack Daniels taps AR, Web3 and more

Jack Daniels is dropping digital collectibles in an AR game, while FIFA launched an AI-football simulation game that will eventually ship NFT integrations.

Otherside holders get dripped out in Gucci

Luxury fashion giant Gucci has designed a limited edition pendant for Yuga Labs’ Otherside metaverse that will come in both physical and nonfungible token (NFT) forms.

Gucci’s silver jewelry piece is dubbed the “KodaPendant,” and will drop on April 6 for hodlers of the Koda or Vessel NFTs, which essentially function as either creatures or avatars in Otherside.

The physical chain itself is 50cm long, with a Koda-shaped pendant engraved with “GG.” There will be 3,333 in total on sale for 450 ApeCoin (APE) a pop, worth roughly $1,930 at current prices.

Once the NFTs are purchased, their Koda or Vessel NFT metadata will be updated with a KodaPendant trait, resulting in a physical update to the token’s associated animated character.

It is the first drop as part of a broader collection called Otherside Relics By Gucci, with the two brands being tight-lipped on what is specifically set to come next.

Explaining the partnership in an April 4 blog post, Yuga Labs noted the duo is looking to “push the boundaries at the intersection of fashion, entertainment, and gaming.”

“Throughout our extensive partnership, we will work together to engage Voyagers in immersive experiences at the intersection of fashion, entertainment, and technology,” the firm wrote.

Jack Daniels gets nifty

Whiskey producer Jack Daniels has launched a new Web3-focused campaign built around Polygon-based digital collectibles and Augmented Reality (AR) in partnership with Yahoo Creative Studios.

In a Pokemon Go-style map-based game, the duo will launch an AR mobile experience across five Australian cities where users can explore certain areas to find a “Jack Daniel’s crate.”

The crates contain prizes such as gift vouchers, trips to a Jack Daniel’s distillery, and NFT music tracks from three Australian bands: Winston Surfshirt, Stand Atlantic and the Psychedelic Porn Crumpets.

There are 2,000 tracks up for grabs in total and if someone finds a crate they can then mint it as a collectible on Polygon.

Discussing the idea behind the campaign with Bandt on April 3, Dimitra Tassopoulos, the senior brand manager for the Jack Daniel’s Family of Brands noted:

“We briefed our media agency, Starcom, and said to them ‘we’re a big brand, we need to push boundaries and look at doing stuff differently.’ We’re going to do out-of-home, digital, social and events but we need to find new and innovative ideas.”

“I remember when bands released music and people lined up to purchase it. They could see the cover art and open it up to see the lyrics. That’s something that the younger generation has not had the joy of discovering because things seem a little less personal when you’re streaming the song rather than owning the song,” he said.

NFT thieves cashed out on Blur in March

Roughly $10.9 million worth of NFTs were stolen in March with three-quarters of them being first re-sold on the Blur marketplace, according to data from blockchain security firm Peckshield.

Tweeting from its alert-focused account on April 2, the firm also outlined half of the stolen NFTs in March were sold within two hours of being swiped with 19.5% of the sales coming from OpenSea.

“$10.9M worth of NFTs were stolen, representing a 32.72%% decrease from the previous month. Half of the stolen NFTs were quickly sold on marketplaces within 2 hours,” the firm tweeted.

Packshield did not offer an explanation as to why the NFT thieves flocked to Blur in March.

Notably, the stolen NFT activity on the marketplace was much lower in February, representing roughly 20% of the first sales of stolen NFTs despite the platform being in the middle of a token airdrop campaign.

FIFA’s new AI Web3 game

FIFA, the international governing body behind association soccer, launched a new artificial intelligence (AI) and Web3-based mobile game called “AI League” on April 4.

AI League initially launched in open beta on Android, with plans to come to Apple’s App Store soon.

It consists of a “4-on-4 casual football game, played between AI-controlled characters” with the player acting as a coach by controlling tactics and customizing player attributes.

The AI characters do not depict actual professional players, instead resembling characters from an animated film or avatar-based NFT project.

In terms of Web3, the characters will eventually become NFTs that can be traded on a marketplace developed by FIFA. The game was announced late last year as part of a range of Web3 games that were supposed to ship before the 2022 world cup in Qatar.

Other Nifty News

According to a March 30 report from blockchain analytics platform DappRadar, there was $4.7 billion worth of NFT trading volume in Q1 2023, more than double that of the previous quarter. The firm pointed to bullish action from the Blur marketplace which took the market by storm during its token airdrop farming period in February.

In light of Hong Kong’s commitment to developing cryptocurrency infrastructure, fintech officia King Leung recently visited Japan to talk with policymakers and regulators in Tokyo to better understand the idea around Web3 digital assets.

Scam alert: MetaMask warns users of deceptive March 31 airdrop rumors

MetaMask posted a warning on its Twitter after coming across rumors of an upcoming MetaMask snapshot or airdrop on social media.

Web3 wallet provider MetaMask has warned its users of “false rumors” of a purported MetaMask airdrop, which appears to have been making the rounds on social media.

According to a March 28 tweet from MetaMask, there have "quite a few rumors going around" of a MetaMask snapshot or airdrop on March 31.

“These rumors are not only false, but they are dangerous. They create opportunities for scammers and phishers,” warned MetaMask.

Cointelegraph has identified a number of Twitter accounts purporting to be related to MetaMask or a MetaMask token airdrop.

In its Twitter post, MetaMask has denied the rumors of an upcoming airdrop and has urged users to stay vigilant for fake sites in the coming days.

The recent rumors may be linked to a “fireside chat” session with ConsenSys CEO and Ethereum co-founder Joe Lubin at ETHDenver 2023 on March 14, who reiterated his firm is “actively working to decentralize” MetaMask. He later reportedly confirmed that they were intending to launch a token.

Lubin also first hinted at a MetaMask token in a Nov. 8 Tweet from 2021, saying “Wen $MASK? Stay tuned.”

While MetaMask has debunked an imminent airdrop, many of the replies from the community suggest they are still hopeful that an airdrop may still occur, but just at a later date.

Cointelegraph has contacted MetaMask’s parent company ConsenSys for clarification about whether there were plans for a future airdrop but was yet to hear back at the time of publication.

Activity on MetaMask nearly tripled on the back of the rumors, with data from DappRadar showing that the number of transactions on March 27 reached 21,460 from a baseline of approximately 8,000.

MetaMask saw a similar flurry of activity due to rumors of an airdrop back in November 2021, following recent airdrops from both the Ethereum Name Service and Lubin’s mention of a token.

Scam alert: $300K stolen by fake Blur airdrop websites

Unsuspecting users looking to claim Blur token airdrops have had funds stolen by a number of fake websites.

Scammers continue to prey on nonfungible token (NFT) users looking to claim Blur token airdrops through the use of numerous scam websites.

According to data from TrustCheck, over $300,000 has been stolen from unsuspecting users that have linked wallets to malicious websites.

The legitimate Blur platform is a newcomer to the NFT marketplace space, making waves in the industry with booming user numbers and trading volume directly resulting from the platform’s three-phase airdrop incentive scheme. 10% of Blur’s total token supply was distributed to users based on their trading activity in its second token airdrop scheme from Feb. 15.

The first airdrop was retroactive, awarding tokens to anybody who traded an NFT on Ethereum in the six months leading up to the platform’s launch in October 2022. The second airdrop awarded tokens to users who listed NFTs before Dec. 6, while the third airdrop awarded tokens to users placing bids on the platform after the feature went live.

Given the incentive program's mechanics, many users have been looking to claim $BLUR tokens across the NFT ecosystem. This created an opportunity for scammers to promote fake airdrop links to malicious websites.

Data shared with Cointelegraph from Ethereum-based Web3 browser security extension TrustCheck reveals that over $300,000 worth of funds have been stolen from 24 different scam websites since Feb. 15. A handful of these websites are still functional, with users warned to be wary when connecting wallets.

The websites make use of smart contracts that automatically prompt a transaction when users connect their ETH wallets. All the ETH from the wallet is then drained to a specific address, which has allowed TrustCheck to keep tabs on the number of funds stolen to date.

Tools like TrustCheck will flag suspicious websites and transactions, warning Web3 users of potential fake websites and smart contracts.

Blur has also been in the spotlight due to reports of users carrying out NFT wash trading in order to cash in on its token airdrop incentive scheme. However, data analytics carried out by data scientist Hildebert Moulié on Dune suggests that Blur’s NFT trading volumes are legitimate.

Fake websites and phishing attacks are commonplace across the internet, while scammers continue attempts to drain funds through Web3 functionality. In February 2023, a URL masquerading as the ETH Denver conference website was linked to a notorious phishing wallet address that has stolen over $300,000 to date.

Scammers also preyed on FTX investors using phishing websites in late 2022 that were scrambling to recoup funds after the implosion of the failed cryptocurrency exchange.

Whale sells 1,010 NFTs in 48 hours in ‘largest NFT dump ever’

With the Blur marketplace set for a second airdrop soon, Nansen’s Andrew Thurman theorized that this major NFT dump could be a play to reap extra BLUR token rewards while also booking some profits.

According to data from Nansen, nonfungible token (NFT) whale Jeffrey Hwang — known colloquially as Machi Big Brother — dumped 1,010 tokens for a total of 11,680 Ether (ETH) or $18.6 million in the space of 48 hours.

In a Feb. 25 Twitter thread, Nansen’s Simian Psychometric Enhancement Technician Andrew Thurman highlighted the trading activity over the previous two days, and noted that it's “likely the largest NFT dump ever.”

The major selling event included 90 Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFTs, 191 Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC) NFTs and 308 Otherdeed NFTs to name a few.

Notably, however, Machi Big Brother (Machi) promptly bought back 991 NFTs following the dump, with Thurman theorizing that could be a play to either book some profits while also conducting “one big wash trade to generate huge Blur airdrop profits,” or a “pretty naked market manipulation. ”

Machi is reportedly one of the biggest receivers of the BLUR token airdrop from upstart NFT marketplace Blur, which recently ousted OpenSea from being the top-ranked NFT platform in terms of trading volume.

On Feb. 14, the project started dishing out its first round of airdrops to the community, with the amount of airdropped tokens depending on the user’s level of platform engagement and Ethereum-based NFT trading activity.

On Feb. 17, blockchain analytics platform Arkham Intel indicated that Machi had received 1.8 million BLUR tokens, and cashed it all out for $1.3 million.

As such, Machi could be looking to score some fresh BLUR tokens in the next round by ramping up NFT trading activity, while other whales may be looking to do the same also.

Looking at the floor prices of top collections that Machi initially dumped, BAYC, MAYC and Otherdeed NFTs have seen their prices drop 7.77%, 9.2% and 8.16% in the past 24 hours, according to data from NFT Price Floor.

“One man's quest for an airdrop is wrecking some markets,” Thurman noted in a subsequent post.

At the time of writing, BLUR sits at $0.79 with the price declining by 17.7% over the past seven days, according to CoinGecko.

On Feb. 22, the Blur team tweeted that the project will soon airdrop $300 million worth of tokens in its second round, or “season two.”
