How Bitcoin’s Success Could Be Fueling Poverty for Latecomers and Non-Holders, ECB Economists ClaimBitcoin’s rise is enriching early adopters at the expense of society, according to a paper by European Central Bank (ECB) economists. They argued that bitcoin’s speculative growth leads to wealth redistribution, where early investors gain while non-holders and latecomers are left poorer. Economists warn this dynamic could harm societal stability, deepening inequality and threatening democracy […]

It comes as decentralized prediction platform Polymarket has gathered more than $500 million in bets on who will likely win the 2024 United States presidential election.

“We urge you to promptly finalize and implement this rule to prevent the commodification of U.S. elections.”

Kamala Harris presents an opportunity for Democrats on crypto, say lawmakers

A letter called for the Democratic National Committee to “include pro-digital asset language” in its platform and for Kamala Harris to consider a pro-crypto running mate.

Democratic members of the US House of Representatives and candidates running in 2024 have signed a letter calling for the party to change its “hostility” toward the digital asset industry following Vice President Kamala Harris becoming the prospective presidential nominee.

In a July 26 letter to the Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair Jaime Harrison, 14 House members, including Representatives Ro Khanna, Wiley Nickel, and Ritchie Torres, and 14 candidates running in various districts across the country urged the party’s leadership to take a “forward-looking approach” to digital assets and blockchain technology. Though some Democrats have voted in favor of certain pro-crypto legislation in Congress, the letter suggested that the party had an image problem concerning digital assets.

“[T]here is a public perception that the party holds a negative viewpoint on digital assets, largely due to the current SEC’s approach to these transformative technologies,” said the DNC letter. ”We believe this previous hostility does not reflect our Party’s progressive, forward-looking, and inclusive values. A refreshed leader of the ticket represents an opportunity to change that perception.”

Crypto Super PAC spends $1.3M on media buy for Arizona Democrat

The Protect Progress political action committee has been behind media buys for candidates in many congressional races across the United States.

The political action committee (PAC) Protect Progress has used more than $1.3 million to support the campaign of a Democratic candidate for Arizona’s 3rd Congressional District.

According to expenditures filed with the Federal Election Commission, the Protect Progress Super PAC disseminated more than $1.3 million in a media buy to support Yassamin Ansari. The Arizona Democrat will compete for the congressional seat in a July 30 primary against Raquel Terán and Duane Wooten.

Though Terán’s and Wooten’s policy positions on crypto and blockchain were unclear at the time of publication, Ansari’s campaign website stated she supported “lead[ing] the way in the blockchain and crypto innovation.” The Democratic candidate also completed Coinbase’s Stand With Crypto questionnaire, suggesting she would support pro-crypto legislation if elected to Congress.

Democratic incumbent targeted by crypto Super PAC ads loses primary

Millions of dollars from political action committees may have contributed to challenger George Latimer’s defeat of incumbent Jamaal Bowman in a June 25 Democratic primary.

Update (June 26 at 6:07 pm UTC): An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that Shomari Figures won a primary in the state of California. It has been corrected to a primary in Alabama.

Jamaal Bowman, a House Representative for New York’s 16th Congressional District, has lost the Democratic primary, which could have allowed him to keep his seat in 2025.

According to a June 26 projection from NBC News, Democratic challenger George Latimer will defeat Bowman by roughly 58%–42%, with 84% of the vote reporting at the time of publication. The Fairshake political action committee (PAC) spent more than $2 million on a media campaign opposing Bowman’s reelection — not attacking his record on voting against pro-crypto bills, but claims of “pushing dangerous conspiracy theories.”

Crypto Super PAC raises $169M following $10M donation from Jump Crypto

A Fairshake spokesperson told Cointelegraph that the political action committee would “have the resources to affect races in 2024 and beyond.”

Fairshake, a political action committee (PAC) that has been backing attack ads against different United States lawmakers, announced that it had raised $169 million ahead of many primaries in the country.

In a June 19 notice to Cointelegraph, a Fairshake spokesperson said Jump Crypto, the digital asset arm of Jump Trading, had donated $10 million to the Super PAC, making its total donations roughly $169 million since its launch. The group has received millions in contributions from crypto firms including Coinbase and Ripple — and an earlier $5 million donation from Jump Crypto — as well as Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz of Andreessen Horowitz and Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss of crypto exchange Gemini.

Fairshake may have already impacted the outcome of certain key races in U.S. elections and continues to purchase media buys as Election Day approaches on Nov. 5. In the United States, money from Super PACs can be used to support specific candidates and political parties, but the groups are not supposed to coordinate with the campaigns.
