Apple disputes monopoly claims, cites ‘fierce competition’ in court

Apple’s letter to a federal judge previewed its slated dismissal motion to a U.S. antitrust suit, with the firm claiming prosecutors didn’t define where it has a monopoly.

Apple has claimed it isn’t a “monopolist” and “faces fierce competition” in the tech sector in a letter previewing its bid to toss a United States antitrust suit.

In a May 21 letter to New Jersey federal judge Julien Neals requesting a conference ahead of its dismissal motion, Apple’s lawyers refuted U.S. claims that it engaged in anticompetitive conduct by excluding third-party access to its platform and made design decisions that “‘lock in’ users to purchasing iPhones.”

The firm said its alleged anticompetitive conduct “involves Apple making unilateral decisions about the terms and conditions on which to permit third parties access to Apple’s proprietary platform.”

U.S. authorities indicted former Digitex CEO Adam Todd in February for failure to implement and maintain an effective Anti-Money Laundering program at the exchange.

Adam Todd, founder and former CEO of the Digitex Futures Exchange, has pleaded guilty in federal court for failure to establish an Anti-Money Laundering program at the firm.

In a May 7 announcement, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida said Todd pleaded guilty to “willfully causing” Digitex to violate the Bank Secrecy Act. Authorities indicted the former CEO in February. According to the indictment, Todd operated an unregistered futures platform for U.S. customers between 2018 and 2022, failing to implement and maintain AML and Know Your Customer (KYC) programs.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Todd could face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Though charged in a different federal district, former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao pleaded guilty to similar charges in November 2023. In April, Zhao was sentenced to four months in prison. Early crypto investor ‘Bitcoin Jesus’ faces extradition to the U.S. after being charged with evading nearly $50 million in taxes.

Officials with the United States Department of Justice announced charges against early Bitcoin (BTC) investor Roger Ver, known by many as ‘Bitcoin Jesus.’

In an April 30 notice, the Justice Department said authorities in Spain had arrested Ver based on criminal charges in the United States, including mail fraud, tax evasion and filing false tax returns. The U.S. government alleged Ver defrauded the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) out of roughly $48 million with his failure to report capital gains on his sale of Bitcoin and other assets.

According to the indictment, Ver allegedly took control of roughly 70,000 in June 2017 — before the now famous bull run — and sold many of them for $240 million. U.S. officials said they planned to extradite Ver from Spain to the United States to stand trial.
