Non-Custodial Dex Platforms Continue to Expand — Curve, Pancakeswap, Sushiswap, Uniswap Lead the Pack

Non-Custodial Dex Platforms Continue to Expand — Curve, Pancakeswap, Sushiswap, Uniswap Lead the PackFive years ago, there was a large quantity of digital currencies and blockchains, but there were very few trading platforms that dealt with decentralized exchange. Since the boom of decentralized finance (defi), there’s now a myriad of decentralized exchange (dex) platforms that allow people to swap funds in a private, non-custodial manner. These days the […]

Ethereum traders expect volatility ahead of Friday’s $820M options expiry

Overly-confident Ethereum options traders are nervously watching the $3,200 level ahead of this week’s $800 million ETH options expiry.

Ether (ETH) will face a critical $820 million monthly options expiry on Friday, Aug. 27. That will be the first time that $3,000 and higher options will have a real fighting chance, even though bulls seem to have missed a good opportunity to dominate the expiry because they were too optimistic about Ether’s price potential.

It is unclear why $140 million of the neutral-to-bullish call options were placed between $3,800 and $8,000, but these instruments will likely become worthless as the monthly expiry approaches.

Competition and the success of interoperability-focused protocols impact Ether price

The Ethereum network has struggled due to its own success, which consistently leads to network congestion and transaction fees of up to $20 and higher. Furthermore, the rise of nonfungible tokens and decentralized finance imposed further stress on the network.

Maybe some of the inflow that was supposed to move Ether price up went to its competitors, which presented stellar performances recently. For example, Cardano (ADA) surged over 100% quarter-to-date as investors expect its long-awaited smart contracts to launch on Sept. 12.

Solana (SOL), another smart contract contender, captured one-third of the inflows to crypto investment products over the last week, according to CoinShares “Digital Asset Fund Flows Weekly.”

Lastly, layer-two scaling solutions like Polygon (MATIC) have also seen 150% gains after successfully bringing DeFi projects into its interoperability pool and launching a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) to scale projects on the software development kits.

Notice how the $3,000 level vastly dominates Friday’s expiry with 30,900 ETH option contracts, representing a $100 million open interest.

The initial call-to-put analysis shows a slight prevalence of the neutral-to-bullish call instruments, with 13% larger open interest. However, bears seem to have been taken by surprise because 83% of their bets have been placed at $2,900 or lower.

To succeed, bears need to push and hold Ether price below $2,900

Nearly half of the neutral-to-bullish call options have expiry prices set at $3,500 or higher. These instruments will become worthless if Ether trades below that price on Friday. The options expiry happens at 8:00 am UTC, so traders might expect some price volatility nearing the event.

Below are the three most likely scenarios that will likely happen and their estimated gross result. Keep in mind that some investors could be trading more complex strategies, including market-neutral ones that use calls and protective puts. Consequently, this estimation is somewhat rudimentary.

The simplistic analysis weighs the call (buy) options against the put (sell) options available at each strike level. So, for example, if Ether’s expiry happens at $3,050, every neutral-to-bullish call option above $3,000 becomes worthless.

  • Below $2,900: 36,360 calls vs. 32,700 puts. The net result is virtually balanced.
  • Between $2,900 and $3,000: 36,770 calls vs. 20,320 puts. The net result favors the neutral-to-bullish instruments by $48 million.
  • Between $3,000 and $3,200: 55,660 calls vs. 8,320 puts. The net result favors the neutral-to-bullish instruments by $147 million.
  • Above $3,200: 62,260 calls vs. 1,490 puts. The net result favors the neutral-to-bullish instruments by $197 million.

Bears will try to minimize the damage, and luckily for them, the honeypot for a favorable price move doesn’t look worthwhile of a significant effort from bulls.

As for the excessively optimistic options traders, they should better rethink their strategy for the September expiry. The Ethereum network seems to be its own biggest enemy because the increasing adoption has fueled the rise in competitors’ decentralized finance applications.

3 reasons why Ethereum can hit $3K in the short term despite overvaluation risks

Ether risks bearish exposure as ETH’s price rises against falling volumes, but three crucial on-chain indicators suggest a dissenting scenario.

Ethereum’s native asset, Ether (ETH), dropped after reclaiming its two-month high in the previous session, suggesting that its recent bullish rally was nearing exhaustion.

In detail, the ETH/USD pair topped out at $2,699 on Sunday for the first time since June 7. The pair’s peak level also pushed its relative strength index (RSI), a momentum-gauging indicator, above 70 — a mark that analysts consider overbought.

Seemingly, traders with short-term risk setups sold the Ether top to secure interim profits, leading up to a modest downside correction.

On Monday, Ether prices rose 1.81% to $2,600 to offset the Sunday sell-off risks.

The upswing indicated that traders could still place higher bids for the cryptocurrency, especially in the days leading up to the Ethereum’s London hard fork upgrade that would — for the first time — bring deflationary features to the project’s economy via a new base-fee burning mechanism.

Greg Waisman, co-founder and chief operation officer of payment network Mercuryo, noted that Ether’s prices could easily cross above $3,000 after the hard fork, given it would bring a “more flexible and cheaper fee structure” to the Ethereum network, boosting adoption. The analyst told Cointelegraph:

“The hype buildup with respect to the forthcoming London hard fork is not reflective of the current price trend. [...] Ethereum is currently seeing a retracement; it confirms that the sellers are deliberately lowering the price for a post-upgrade price pump.”

That bullish trio

At least three on-chain indicators tracking Ether flows in and out of dedicated addresses foresee an extending upside setup.

Spotted on CryptoQuant, the three metrics involved tracking Ether reserves across all exchanges and their outflow from trading platforms, as well as the volume of ETH tokens being deposited to Ethereum 2.0 smart contract.

The CryptoQuant data showed that the total Ether reserves on exchanges declined, indicating that fewer traders are interested in exchanging ETH for other assets. Meanwhile, the ETH outflow from those exchanges spiked, illustrating traders’ intention to hold their Ether around the London hard fork event.

Working together with the exchange data, the third on-chain indicator showed a surge in ETH deposits to its smart contract.

In detail, users can stake 32 ETH into Ethereum 2.0 smart contracts to become validators on its proof-of-stake blockchain. In doing so, they can expect to received rewards for batching transactions into a new Ethereum block or checking the work of other validators to keep the chain running securely.

Analysts see the event as bullish because it removes the active Ether supply from circulation against a potentially rising demand.

“The increasing Ethereum 2.0 deposits show a big trust in the future potentials of the Ethereum blockchain, which stirs the scarcity of its native token Ether,” Waisman explained. “The situation may impact positively on the coin’s price.”

“With these positive fundamentals, a return back to the previous all-time high of $4,360 in the long term will be a mild ambition price target for Ether.”

Cats cause chaos on Ethereum again as Mila Kunis project sells out in 35 minutes

Data from Dune Analytics shows there was a total of 344.4 ETH ($793,000) in value lost to failed Stoner Cats transactions.

Tokenized cats have once again caused chaos on the Ethereum network after an NFT project from actress Mila Kunis sold out in 35 minutes.

It echoes the launch of another cat-based NFT project CryptoKitties, which famously gummed up the Ethereum network in 2017.

The launch Stoner Cats was initially delayed by a day after the team found a bug in the underlying art layers. However, the second attempt has been successful and sold out in just “35 meow-nutes” according to a catastrophic pun from Stoner Cats.

Gas prices soared as NFT collectors snapped up the first tranche of Stoner Cats that had a cap of 10,420 NFTs at a price of 0.35 ETH each, worth roughly $804 at the time of writing. According to the project’s website, another 3,000 new NFTs will be released over the course of the first season.

Decentralized finance analytics firm DeFiprime joked that “as usual cats clogged Ethereum” on Twitter, and shared on-chain data that showed a sharp spike in ETH gas fees ranging between 200 Gwei ($9.50) for a slow transaction and a hefty 709 Gwei ($33.67) for a rapid transaction.

According to data from Dune Analytics, there was also a total of 344.4 ETH ($793,000) in value lost to failed Stoner Cats transactions.

Stoner Cats is an animated series that is backed by NFTs, and the characters are voiced by celebrities including Kunis, Jane Fonda, Ashton Kutcher, Seth MacFarlane, and Chris Rock. The NFTs grant the owner access to watch the show, and the project uses NFT sales to finance its production.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin is also a voice actor for the character dubbed “Lord Catsinton” who is described as a “spirit guide.”

Investors have now flocked to list the NFTs on OpenSea, and a StonerCat NFT depicting Buterin’s character is currently on sale for 77 ETH worth roughly $177,000 — a percentage markup of around 9500%. An NFT depicting Seth MacFarlane’s character is on sale for 420 ETH, or more than $960,000.

The short lived surge pales in comparison to CryptoKitties however, which famously “broke Ethereum” back in 2017 after its launch was met with overwhelming demand.

Cointelegraph reported in May 2020 that a surprise CrypoKitties drop overwhelmed the Nifty NFT marketplace after an abundance of collectors flocked to the platform and resulted in a series of service issues such as slowness and failed transactions.
