Ethereum layer 2s hold .5B stablecoin supply

Ethereum layer-2 networks now lock over $13.5 billion in stablecoins, driving total market capitalization to $205 billion.

Stablecoins locked onto Ethereum layer-2 networks have reached a new all-time high, showcasing rising demand for cryptocurrencies.

The stablecoin supply to all blockchains combined is dominated by Tether (USDT), USD Coin (USDC) and Ethena’s stablecoin, USDe.

As of Dec. 20, the Ethereum blockchain held $13.5 billion worth of stablecoins, according to data from Tie Terminal, a crypto data platform for institutions and Cointelegraph Markets Pro. The overall stablecoin circulation crossed $205 billion, showing the ecosystem’s growing relevance in real-world use cases.

10% of Ethereum validators signal gas limit increase

Ethereum core developer Eric Connor said increasing gas limits could result in a 15% to 33% reduction in transaction fees.

The percentage of Ethereum validators signaling support for raising the network’s gas limit rose to 10% as the community rallied to increase the maximum amount of gas allowed to be spent for transactions to be included in a single Ethereum block.

On Dec. 19, the number of validators signaling a gas limit greater than 30 million increased to 10% of the network. Before December, the percentage of validators signaling an increase in gas limit was a little over 1%.

Bitcoin’s pullback after hitting a new all-time high above $108,000 has started a correction in select altcoins, signaling profit booking by the bulls.

Bitcoin (BTC) has pulled back after making a new all-time high above $108,000 on Dec. 17, indicating that the bears have not given up and are selling on rallies. BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes wrote in his “Trump Truth” blog post that the crypto markets are likely to dump following United States President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration in January 2025. Hayes said that selling will occur after market participants realize that any crypto policy changes will take about a year to enact.

In contrast, Bitfinex analysts expect the dips in Bitcoin’s uptrend to be short-lived in 2025 due to institutional demand. They estimate Bitcoin to reach $145,000 by mid-2025 and potentially stretch to “$200,000 under favorable conditions.”

HashKey Group launches Ethereum layer-2 HashKey Chain mainnet

The launch follows a successful testnet period where 50 projects were deployed and more than 24.72 million transactions were completed.

HashKey Chain, a public blockchain developed by Hong Kong-based HashKey Group, officially launched its Ethereum layer-2 mainnet on Dec. 18.

The mainnet launch follows a month-long successful testnet period during which more than 860,000 wallet addresses were registered, a reported 24.72 million transactions were recorded, and over 300,000 community members participated.
