CoinShares lists physically-backed crypto ETPs on German exchange

Deutsche Boerse Xetra is listing CoinShares physical Bitcoin, Ether, and Litecoin ETPs.

European digital asset manager CoinShares is expanding the reach of its physically-backed exchange-traded product (ETP) portfolio with a new listing in Germany.

According to an announcement on Monday, CoinShares Physical Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), and Litecoin (LTC) ETPs have cross-listed on major German exchange Deutsche Boerse Xetra.

The digital asset manager started the year by launching a Bitcoin ETP named CoinShares Physical Bitcoin (BITC) in January. Listed on Switzerland’s SIX Swiss Exchange, each ETP is physically backed by 0.001 Bitcoin.

Since then, the CoinShares Physical platform saw the launch of Ether and Litecoin ETPs. CoinShares Physical Ethereum (ETHE) was backed with 0.03 ETH at launch, while CoinShares Physical Litecoin (LITE) was backed with 0.2 LTC.

CoinShares’ chief revenue officer Frank Spiteri said that the CoinShares Physical platform now has over $380 million in assets under management and operates in eleven countries.

The listing of CoinShares Physical Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin ETPs on Boerse Xetra follows approval from regulators to distribute the ETPs across the European Union, the announcement reads.

CoinShares’ passporting to Germany enabled CoinShares Physical ETPs’ entrance into Germany, Italy, Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Spain, France, Denmark, Finland and Norway.

“Focussing on market demand, we launched earlier this year, our institutional platform CoinShares Physical first in Switzerland and now in Europe,” CoinShares CEO Jean-Marie Mognetti said. The Boerse Xetra listing offers European institutional investors an entry point into digital assets with the credibility of CoinShares, he added.

Deutsche Boerse Xetra is no stranger to cryptocurrency ETPs. Last year, London-based ETC Group announced the listing of its Bitcoin Exchange Traded Crypto (BTCE) on the exchange. It was also one of two European exchanges along with SIX to list New York-based asset manager WisdomTree’s physically-backed Ether ETP.

German digital stock exchange will list physical Litecoin ETP

The group already has Bitcoin and Ether ETPs listed on the Deutsche Börse Xetra.

London-based ETC Group, the firm responsible for listing the first crypto exchange-traded product on Germany’s Xetra digital stock exchange, will offer a new listing for Litecoin.

In an announcement today, the ETC Group said its physical Litecoin exchanged-traded crypto, under the ticker ELTC, will be launching on Deutsche Börse Xetra on April 14. According to the firm, the exchange-traded product, or ETP, will be the first Litecoin (LTC) product on the exchange following approval from Germany's Federal Financial Supervisory Authority, or BaFin.

"The current economic uncertainty has underlined the attraction of crypto assets for investors as they offer opportunities for diversification from traditional assets such as equities and bonds, and strong hedging qualities against inflation,” said ETC Group CEO Bradley Duke. "Traditional markets will remain volatile for some time, fueling demand for alternatives such as cryptocurrencies.”

He added:

“In contrast to previous rallies in cryptocurrencies, the current one is the first to be supported by both retail and institutional investors, making this the ideal time to launch ELTC."

The ETC Group’s Litecoin ETP represents the third exchange-traded crypto from the group in the last year. In June, the firm listed a Bitcoin ETP on Xetra, followed by an Ether ETP last month. The firm reported that its Ether ETP traded more than $1 million in its first week on the exchange, while the Bitcoin ETP reportedly has grown to more than $1 billion in assets under management.

An ETP is not quite the same as an exchange-traded fund, or ETF. When the ETC Group launched its Bitcoin ETP last year, it said it was “trading Bitcoin through an ETP structure,” which seemingly doesn’t meet the definition of an ETF in the European Union, as it’s a single asset instrument.

As the ninth largest cryptocurrency with a market capitalization of more than $20 billion, Litecoin has attracted the attention of some investment firms along with Bitcoin and Ether. Though the ETC Group will reportedly be the first to offer a listing for a physical Litecoin ETP, CoinShares announced earlier this month it would be listing its LTC ETP on the SIX Swiss Exchange.

Record first quarter for institutional crypto investment products: CoinShares

Assets under management for institutional funds have hit a record high of $59 billion.

According to digital asset investment manager CoinShares, the first quarter of 2021 hit a new record for institutional crypto product inflows.

As reported in CoinShares’ Tuesday “Digital Asset Fund Flows Weekly” bulletin, Q1 of this year hit a new record with $4.5 billion in inflows compared with $3.9 billion in the final quarter of 2020.

It added that inflows for the past week recorded, which ended on Friday, totaled $106 million, helping push the total for the three-month period 11% higher than the previous quarter. The inflow was down on previous weeks, however, as the week ending March 12 recorded a $242-million inflow.

While institutional inflows have slowed, CoinShares believes it is not indicative of a broader slowing trend, as quarterly growth rates tend to be varied.

Inflows for the past week have been dominated by $83 million in Bitcoin (BTC) products, or 78% of the total, and $20 million in Ether (ETH). Overall volumes for Bitcoin investment products comprise a relatively small share of 6.7% of the total trading volume for regulated or “trusted” cryptocurrency exchanges.

Assets under management for both active and passive crypto investment products are at an all-time high of $59 billion. Grayscale makes up the lion’s share of this AUM figure with $46 billion, or 78% of the total. The second-largest crypto asset fund is CoinShares itself with $5 billion in assets under management.

The European digital asset investment firm has expanded its institutional products this week with the introduction of a physically backed Litecoin exchange-traded product. The new CoinShares investment product will be initially listed on Switzerland’s regulated crypto exchange, SIX Swiss Exchange.

The Litecoin (LTC) ETP is the third institutional-grade product the firm has launched in 2021. It follows a physically backed Bitcoin ETP launched in January and a similar one for Ether in February.

On Thursday, Cointelegraph reported that CoinShares had entered a partnership with Canadian investment fund manager 3iQ in order to launch a Bitcoin exchange-traded fund in Canada.

In April 2020, 3iQ launched Canada’s first institutional Bitcoin fund, and it currently has $1.7 billion in assets under management according to the CoinShares report.
