As cryptocurrency continues to embed itself into the mainstream, its influence is becoming increasingly visible in today’s popular culture. From documentaries and music to reality TV and even live music events, 2024 showcased crypto’s evolving presence in ways that entertained, educated and sometimes baffled audiences. 

Here are five notable instances where crypto made a mark on pop culture this year.

Peter Todd forced into hiding after HBO doc claims he invented Bitcoin

Documentary filmmaker Cullen Hoback stands by his allegation Todd is Satoshi Nakamoto despite his denial. 

Canadian cryptographer and computer scientist Peter Todd says he’s been forced into hiding for fear of his safety after an HBO documentary supposedly outed him as the inventor of Bitcoin (BTC). 

The film, dubbed “Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery,” aired on Oct. 9 and was purported to finally reveal the mystery surrounding the true identity of “Satoshi Nakamoto,” the pseudonym of a person thought to be the inventor of Bitcoin. 

Ultimately, after exploring other potential candidates, the documentary ended on a dubious note with Todd stating “Well yeah, I’m Satoshi Nakamoto.”

Nick Szabo overtakes Len Sassaman as HBO’s Satoshi reveal on Polymarket

Sassaman’s odds tanked after the HBO documentary’s producer said he confronted who he thinks is Satoshi Nakamoto, likely ruling out Sassaman, who passed in 2011.

American computer scientist Nick Szabo is now the frontrunner on Polymarket to be named Satoshi Nakamoto in HBO’s upcoming documentary that claims to name Bitcon’s creator, overtaking cryptographer Len Sassaman.

Polymarket betters have put 27.9% odds of Szabo, inventor of the failed crypto network Bit Gold, as the one HBO’s Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery will name as Bitcoin’s pseudonymous creator, followed by Sassaman at 14% then Blockstream CEO Adam Back at 4.3%

Sassaman initially led with as high as 68% odds shortly after the betting platform opened the market on Oct. 4.
