Janice McAfee, the widow of John McAfee, has questioned the "suicide narrative" asserting that there was no mention of a suicide note when she picked up his belongings from jail.
Janice McAfee, the widow of anti-virus pioneer John McAfee, says that she can’t “accept the suicide story” relating to the death of her husband until an investigation has been completed.
In a July 7 Twitter post, McAfee noted that she is still in shock, as she expressed her disbelief that the 75-year-old would kill himself because of looming extradition to the U.S. to face charges of tax evasion, and the possibility of life in prison.
The outspoken crypto proponent was found dead in his jail cell within hours of a Spanish court ordering his extradition to the U.S. on June 23. An official autopsy is being conducted by Spanish authorities, but newspaper El Pais has cited unnamed sources saying preliminary results showed the death was by suicide.
McAfee described the mainstream media as a “malignant cancer” and said that she questioned the “story of John’s suicide”, noting that the reported “suicide note” found in his pocket was never mentioned when she picked up his belongings from jail and was something the MSM found out before she did.
In McAfee’s view, the decision from Spanish courts was no surprise to John and wouldn’t have tipped him over the edge, as he was prepared to appeal the process:
“We had a plan of action in place to begin the appeal process and we discussed plans for the next stages of his legal fight. The extradition would not have happened immediately, it would have taken many months at least.”
“John was a fighter and he had so much more fight left in him. He told me not to worry, we would continue to fight all the necessary appeals,” she added.
Denial is the first of the 'five stages of grief' and many people, including Edward Snowden and Charles Hoskinson, have stated publicly the suicide was an understandable response to the situation McAfee was in. However, conspiracy theories quickly began to swirl in a similar fashion to the suicide of Jeffrey Epstein, asserting that McAfee had not died from his own hand.
The McAfee Antivirus founder had touted that he had enough dirt on the U.S. government to be assassinated, noting in December 2019 that “If I suicide myself, I didn't. I was whackd. Check my right arm,” in reference to his tattoo which read “WHACKD.”

His grieving widow hopes an investigation will uncover more details.
“The investigation into John’s death is still ongoing but I will share what information I can, when I can. Until then, I do not accept the ‘suicide’ story that has been spread by the malignant cancer that is the MSM. They are their unnamed sources are not to be trusted,” she stated.
I cannot begin to describe this pain I am feeling. That everyone who truly loved John is feeling. I have been struggling to write this tweet since the news of John's death. I still cannot believe he is really gone. I miss you and I will love you forever John David. pic.twitter.com/FnmpaCWxCO

John McAfee’s candle may have burned out, but his legacy will live on. Tributes for the tech savant continue to flow in after his passing.
Often a figure of ridicule within the crypto community thanks to his outlandish predictions as well as being a larger-than-life personality, John McAfee has ceased to be in the spotlight of the crypto community. However, following his alleged “suicide” that occurred in a Spanish prison cell on June 23, tributes have been flowing en masse for the tech savant, who was also an early proponent of digital currencies — especially Bitcoin (BTC) and later Monero (XMR).
McAfee had been in exile for the last few years of his life. In this regard, it has been widely reported that the creator of McAfee Antivirus had been on the run from the United States authorities for evading his tax liabilities, which were touted to be worth over $4 million. In all, he had been named in a total of 10 federal indictments and was ordered to be extradited to the U.S. mere hours before the news of his suicide surfaced.
After being apprehended by local authorities at Barcelona airport last year, McAfee seemed to have acclimatized quite well to his prison surroundings. “I have friends. The food is good. All is well” he tweeted in October 2020. This, in the eyes of former National Security Agency operative and whistleblower Edward Snowden, seemed to suggest that the U.S. legal system was so fractured that even native-born defendants “would rather die in a prison cell abroad” than become subject to such an unfair system.
One of the strangest aspects of this entire development is that over the course of the last few years, McAfee repeatedly emphasized the fact that American officials had been sending him subtle yet fairly explicit messages suggesting that his time here was nearly done and that he was going to be “suicided” soon.
On the subject, one of his tweets alarmingly read: “U.S. officials saying, in effect: ‘We’re coming for you, McAfee! We’re going to kill yourself.’ I got a tattoo today just in case. If I suicide myself, I didn’t. I was whackd. Check my right arm.”
Not only that, in one of his statements, he made it clear that in case he was ever found hanging in his cell, it would be through no fault of his own but rather an attempt “a la Epstein” to silence him. McAfee claimed that he had a lot of inside dirt on many of the world’s elites, government organizations, etc., even going as far as saying that he was going to start “naming names” — including a top-ranked Central Intelligence Agency employee who had directly been involved in a lot of sketchy business.
Furthermore, in an interview given by McAfee’s widow, Janice, on June 25, she claimed that the British-American tycoon was not even the least bit “suicidal” when she last spoke to him, which was apparently just a few hours before his body was discovered in his cell.
And while authorities claim that there is nothing suspicious about the tech titan’s death, following the aforementioned revelations, people all over social media have been saying that there might have been “foul play” involved.
Lastly, just a day before his untimely death, Spain’s National Court announced that it had come to an agreement with U.S. authorities regarding McAfee’s extradition — with the final decision still pending and subject to additional judicial inquiry. In fact, McAfee and his legal counsel had already devised a plan of action to appeal the decision, further suggesting that the pressure of the extradition alone may have not caused McAfee to resort to suicide.
Shortly after news of his demise started doing rounds online, calls for McAfee’s death being planned started to gain a lot of traction. Firstly, the flames were ignited when McAfee’s official Instagram account shared an image of the letter “Q,” supposedly shortly after his death.
The “Q” in question here is in direct reference to the QAnon conspiracy theory that suggests that a group of elite pedophiles run a global child sex trafficking ring and have a direct say in how the American administration runs. What’s more, the theory also suggests that this cabal of high-ranked elites can manipulate the global economy thanks to their control of the fractional banking system.
As expected, as a result of the post, a large number of QAnon influencers on Telegram started sharing images claiming that McAfee was just another sacrificial pawn — much like Jeffery Epstein — and had to be “suicided” due to the secrets he possessed regarding those in power across the globe.
In a tweet from late 2019, McAfee noted in no uncertain terms that if he were to ever “disappear” mysteriously, he would release some 31-plus terabytes of incriminating data (related to various government officials as well as those in positions of power) to the media. However, even as people all over the world continue to wait quite eagerly for this information, no such data seems to have been made available so far.
In fact, he even allegedly wrote in a message that he has a stash of sensitive data that is backed up in a number of hard drives and has been stored in his condo near 88th Street, north of Miami Beach. That said, a quick look at McAfee’s feed shows no such post, suggesting that the message may have been tweeted and later deleted or could have been a total figment of imagination, to begin with.
Over the last couple of years, McAfee had continued to associate himself with many conspiracies, as is made evident by the fact that in one of his posts, he depicted himself standing in front of Jeffrey Epstein, the multi-millionaire and convicted sex offender, who was also the victim of an alleged “forced suicide.”
As part of the photo’s caption in his “Q” Instagram post, he added: “I never said Jeffrey Epstein was murdered. I said he didn’t commit suicide. Not the same. Could be alive. Could have never existed. Maybe murdered. I dunno. I only know he didn’t commit suicide.”
Lastly, the tech entrepreneur had recently even launched a cryptocurrency called Pizza that advertised itself with an image of Hillary Clinton eating pizza. The asset seemed to be a direct reference to the Pizzagate conspiracy theory, which garnered a lot of traction a couple of years ago after the former Secretary of State’s emails were leaked online through Wikileaks.
Born in 1945 to an American father who was serving in the army and stationed in the United Kingdom at the time, McAfee received his Ph.D. in mathematics before making his way to Silicon Valley in the late-1970s. Within a decade and a half, he was not only working for Lockheed but also spending a substantial portion of his personal time looking at software solutions that could help combat the growing problem of computer viruses.
In the early 90s, John established McAfee Associates from the comfort of his home and started devising novel solutions to help combat various digital threats that were prevalent at the time. As a result, before the dawn of the new millennium, the company was already raking in close to $5 million a year.
Following his passing, the tributes have been flowing in from all sides. For example, Bitcoin influencer and podcaster Anthony Pompliano shared a post remembering McAfee as a “kind, funny, and incredibly intelligent,” individual. Similarly, Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson, too, spoke highly of McAfee’s contributions to the domain of computer sciences, calling the man “one of the most enigmatic and interesting people in the cryptocurrency space and the history of computing.”
While there will always be people who either believe or disbelieve the narrative that the U.S. government had a role to play in McAfee’s death, the fact of the matter is that he did claim that he had a lot of dirt on the global elites. Now, whether or not any of this so-called classified information makes its way to the internet remains to be seen.
That, however, does not take away from the fact that McAfee was not only a true pioneer in the field of digital security but also a visionary who could foresee the rise of cryptocurrencies even when the space was in its infancy.
Conspiracies aside, the tech pioneer will be sorely missed by many.
The death of computer security pioneer and international fugitive John McAfee been met with an outpouring of emotions on Crypto Twitter.
The reported suicide of notorious tax fugitive, Bitcoin proponent, and antivirus software pioneer, John McAfee, has prompted an outpouring of tributes and conspiracy theories today.
After years of evading U.S. taxes and authorities, a Spanish court had ordered McAfee’s extradition just hours before he was found dead, with the 75-year-old expected to face a life sentence in the United States should he have been extradited.
Former National Security Agency (NSA) employee and whistleblower, Edward Snowden, criticized the global reach of U.S. enforcement and warned that McAfee's untimely end may not be the only one as “Julian Assange’s story could end much the same.” He tweeted:
“Europe should not extradite those accused of non-violent crimes to a court system so unfair — and a prison system so cruel — that native-born defendants would rather die than become subject to it.”
Cardano founder, Charles Hoskinson, praised McAfee’s contributions to computer science, describing him as “one of the most enigmatic and interesting people in the cryptocurrency space and the history of computing.” “He was also a deeply troubled person,” added Hoskinson, noting McAfee’s well-documented personal traumas and substance abuse issues.

“The reason for the suicide seems self-evident — McAfee was 75 years old, and the extradition ot the US was approved, he was looking at over 30 years in jail, if convicted, and likely would have been [...] it seem that he decided to choose ending his life there in a Spanish prison rather than a U.S. prison.”
Bitcoin influencer and podcaster Anthony Pompliano remembered McAfee as “kind, funny, and incredibly intelligent,” sharing an image of himself alongside the anti-virus pioneer and his wife Janice Dyson, wielding heavy munitions from the house boat the pair had used to evade authorities for years.
I once had the opportunity to spend the day with the legend @officialmcafee on his boat in the Bahamas.

He was kind, funny, and incredibly intelligent.
Will always remember that day. RIP to one of the world’s most unique individuals. pic.twitter.com/B5FnvDBRYK
Kim Dotcom, an internet entrepreneur who is fighting his own extradition charges from New Zealand over his file-sharing network, Megaupload, lamented McAfee’s drug abuse taking away from his potential, stating:
“A pioneer in data security. I always thought he partied too hard, should have avoided the drugs and focus on using his brilliant mind for good. When he had a sober mind it was all about freedom.”
Despite McAfee’s own legal representatives in Spain, informing Reuters that McAfee had hanged himself rather than face life in prison, the internet is predictably ablaze with conspiracy theories asserting McAfee had not died at his own hand.
The flames were fanned shortly after his death was reported, when McAfee’s official Instragram account shared an image of the letter “Q,” igniting excitement among QAnon conspiracy theorists. Business Insider reported that QAnon influencers on Telegram with “hundreds of thousands of followers” were sharing posts doubting the suicide story.
McAfee’s own Tweets have been reposted endlessly today, including one from December 2019 claiming the government was threatening to assassinate him and to not believe any version of events where he committed suicide. However, the tweet was promoting his “WHAKD” crypto token, which referenced the death of Jeffrey Epstein, and linked to a site where the token could be purchased.

Other conspiracy theorists zeroed in on a post from June 2019 where he claimed to have a “31+ terabyte” trove of data with evidence of government corruption that he claimed incriminated “a CIA agent” and “two Bahamian officials” that he would release if he were ever arrested. However McAfee was arrested in October 2020 and no such evidence trove has been released.
Every eccentric millionaire beefing with governments claims they have proof of corruption and that everything will be made public should tragedy befall them.
— Non-Fungible Toker (@eldeezo) June 23, 2021
Tragedy eventually befalls them, but the dead man's switch never triggers and the proof is never delivered.
It’s worth bearing in mind McAfee was no stranger to making bold and outlandish claims, including promising he would devour his own phallus on national television should the price of Bitcoin fail to exceed $1 million by 2021, that he had performed sexual intercourse with a whale, and that he had synthesized a new narcotic compound in Belize.
McAfee’s Tweets from prison had also taken on an increasingly sombre tone in recent weeks. In May, he revealed he had discussed suicide with a fellow inmate.
Today a man facing a difficult situation asked if I knew of painless ways to kill himself. Having little experience in such, I was of not much help.
— John McAfee (@officialmcafee) May 27, 2021
The amazing thing is that the tone of the discussion was like discussing the weather.
Prison is a strange environment.
He also spoke of being “an old man lost in a near infinite Twitter verse — like tears in rain" and admitting to "having a down day.”
McAfee’s Spanish lawyer, Javier Villalba, told Reuters he believed that McAfee simply could not tolerate being locked up:
“This is the result of a cruel system that had no reason to keep this man in jail for so long.”

Many may remember McAfee for being unapologetically outspoken for his thoughts on government overreach and a unique character in the crypto space.
According to a Wednesday report from Spanish international news agency EFE, John McAfee has been found dead in his prison cell at the Brians 2 Penitentiary Center.
Born in 1945, McAfee founded the software company McAfee Associates in his early forties. His company was responsible for one of the most well known antivirus software programs at the time. He resigned from the company in 1994, and went on to found software firm Tribal Voice — behind one of the internet’s first instant message and chat programs — as well technology company QuorumEx and security and privacy company Future Tense Central.
The U.S. government had been seeking McAfee’s extradition for charges including failing to submit tax returns from 2014 to 2018 and allegedly not reporting income related to pushing crypto projects and consulting work. He had been detained in Spain since October 2020 after his arrest at Barcelona’s international airport.

Earlier today, a Spanish court ruled McAfee could have been extradited to the United States following approval from the country’s Council of Ministers and the opportunity for his legal team to appeal the decision. The 75-year-old previously argued that the charges he faced were politically motivated, and if he had been extradited, he would have spent the rest of his life in prison.

Lawyers will have the opportunity to appeal the court’s decision and local lawmakers will need to approve the extradition before it is final.
John McAfee, the founder of the antivirus software company of the same name, is one step closer to facing prosecution in the United States for tax evasion.
In a ruling released today, the Spanish National Court approved the extradition of McAfee to the United States. The U.S. government had been seeking his extradition for charges including failing to submit tax returns from 2014 to 2018 and allegedly illegally profiting from “promoting cryptocurrencies, consulting work, speaking engagements, and selling the rights to his life story for a documentary.”
McAfee’s legal team will have the opportunity to appeal the court’s decision. In addition, Spain’s Council of Ministers will need to approve the extradition before it is final.
The 76-year-old antivirus company founder has been detained in Spain since October 2020. However, someone with access to his account regularly posts on his behalf concerning his condition and thoughts on the legality of his situation. Last week, he claimed he no longer has any crypto, as it has “dissolved through the many hands of Team McAfee” or otherwise been seized by authorities.
