Bitcoin open interest exceeds $40B amid brush near $70K

High open interest signals more leverage, which could induce another flush-out if positions are liquidated. 

Open interest on Bitcoin derivatives reached a record high on Oct. 21, as BTC came close to breaching the $70,000 price point. 

In a post on X on Oct. 21, CoinGlass reported that Open Interest (OI) on Bitcoin (BTC) futures contracts had reached a record high of $40.5 billion.

Open interest is the value or number of outstanding futures contracts that have yet to expire. It measures the amount of money invested in Bitcoin derivatives at any given time, with higher OI indicating potentially more leverage and volatility in the system.

Traders eye $71.5K Bitcoin price as open interest jumps 13%

Bitcoin may be gearing up to move above $70,000 now it has reclaimed a critical level that traders have been closely watching for the past two months.

Bitcoin could be headed toward the $71,500 mark after breaching the $65,000 price point on Tuesday, based on historical patterns as observed by crypto traders. 

The price rebound has also increased interest among future traders betting on Bitcoin’s near-term price movements.

“Breaking $65,000 would mean price would be ready to move inside the $65,000-$71,500 region,” pseudonymous crypto trader Rekt Capital wrote in a July 16 X post, when Bitcoin (BTC) was hovering just shy of $65,000.

$1.35B in Bitcoin options expire this week — Do BTC bulls or bears have the upper hand?

This week’s Bitcoin options expiry sits at $1.35 billion, but what is the expected impact on BTC price?

Whenever Bitcoin's (BTC) price action exhibits significant corrections, analysts and traders are quick to search for a reason, often pointing fingers at derivatives markets where bears allegedly exploit futures contract liquidation levels or anticipate increased profits from weekly BTC options expiries. 

Such talk has been on the decline recently, thanks to Bitcoin’s range-bound price action, but now that murmurs of a trend reversal have come back, let’s take a look at how whales are positioned using Bitcoin derivatives markets.

The recent failure to maintain prices above $65,000 on May 6 is an example of how some market participants blame the weekly options expiry for the recent downtrend. If this were the case, which can be inferred by BTC derivatives metrics, further downward pressure could be expected ahead of the 8:00 am UTC expiry on May 10.
