Robinhood Q2 crypto revenue surges 161% on rising trading volume

The $81 million Robinhood made in crypto revenue was more than double made from equities in Q2.

Online brokerage platform Robinhood’s crypto transaction-based revenues increased 161% year-on-year to $81 million in the second quarter amid a rise in trading volume.

The $21.5 billion in trading volume was a 137% increase from Q2, 2023, but a 40% fall from the Q1, 2024, the trading firm revealed in its Q2 financial statement on Aug. 7.

Robinhood attributed this to a downward swing in monthly active users in Q2 as crypto prices fell.

MicroStrategy Q1 net loss hits $53.1M but Bitcoin buying spree continues

MicroStrategy has yet to adopt the new accounting standard that would have taken the billions of dollars in paper gains from Bitcoin’s 65% price rally into account.

MicroStrategy, the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin (BTC), reported a net loss of $53.1 million in the first quarter of 2024, while the firm continued to stack more Bitcoin in April.

The net loss came as the firm recorded a $191.6 million digital asset impairment loss in the quarter, up 10 times from the prior year period. Revenue also fell 5.5% compared to the first quarter of 2023, reaching $115.2 million, according to MicroStrategy’s Q1 results filing.

The firm is, however, yet to adopt the new digital asset fair value accounting standard — which would have taken into account the 65% increase in fair value (or market value) of Bitcoin during the quarter.

Marathon Digital sees 670% revenue gain in Q3 as Bitcoin production surges

Marathon announced a 467% increase in Bitcoin production year-on-year in the third quarter, while hashrate rose over 400% in the same timeframe.

Bitcoin mining firm Marathon Digital Holdings saw its revenue surge $670% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2023, amid a nearly five-fold increase in Bitcoin production.

The results saw Marathon also swing to a quarterly profit, with $64.1 million of net income in the third quarter, according to the firm’s Nov. 8 results filing.

The firm partly attributed the improved financial results to a 467% spike in Bitcoin (BTC) production from 6.7 mined BTC per day in Q3 2022 to 37.9 BTC per day in Q3 2023. Similarly, Marathon’s energized hashrate boosted 403% over the same timeframe.

Part of Marathon’s boost in hashrate came from its new, 27-megawatt hydro-powered mining venture in Paraguay, which it announced on Nov. 8.

Marathon’s CEO and chairman Fred Thiel said the “significant progress” has helped strengthen the firm’s balance sheet ahead of the Bitcoin halving event scheduled for April 2024.

A $417 million note exchange completed in September managed to reduce Marathon’s long-term debt to 56% and in doing so captured over $100 million in cash savings for shareholders, Thiel noted, adding:

“For the first time in two years, our combined cash and bitcoin holdings exceeded our debt at the quarter's end.”

Meanwhile, Marathon remains committed to increasing its hashrate in the short to mid-term.

Its installed hashrate currently sits at 23.1 exahashes per second but the firm is looking to boost that to 26 EH/s and a further 30% in 2024.

MicroStrategy’s Bitcoin bag is up $900M amid BTC price surge

Michael Saylor founded MicroStrategy has bought 6,067 Bitcoin since the start of the third quarter.

Business intelligence firm MicroStrategy has notched a paper gain of $900 million on its stack of 158,400 Bitcoin, spurred by optimism over the potential approval of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds.

The Michael Saylor-founded firm added 6,067 Bitcoin (BTC) since the third quarter, including another 155 in October, according to MicroStrategy’s Nov. 1 results filing.

MicroStrategy’s CEO Phong Le said the firm isn’t shying away from its Bitcoin strategy any time soon.

“Our commitment to acquire and hold bitcoin remains strong, especially with the promising backdrop of potential increased institutional adoption.”

The firm revenue increased 3% year-on-year to $129.5 million over the quarter, however it wasn’t enough to keep the firm out of the red, recording a net loss of $143.4 million.

Digital asset impairment losses and income taxes attributed to $33.6 million $109.6 million of the total net losses, the firm noted.

While Bitcoin’s price has surged again of late, BTC fell 11.5% from $30,480 to $26,970 during the third quarter (July 1 to Sept. 30).

MicroStrategy capitalized on this downward period, buying the 6,067 BTC for an average price of $27,590.

The firm is also confident with where its artificial intelligence-integrated business analytics products are situated, with its software licenses and subscription services increasing 16% and 28% year-over-year.

MicroStrategy’s Bitcoin conviction ‘strong’ as it returns to profit in Q1: CEO

The one-time income tax benefit helped the firm reach a profit of $94 million in the first quarter of 2023.

Business intelligence platform MicroStrategy has reiterated its commitment to its Bitcoin (BTC) investment strategy after turning its first quarterly profit since 2020.

The Michael Saylor-founded firm went back into the green in the first quarter of 2023 with a profit of $94 million, which was largely attributed to a one-time income tax benefit of $453.2 million.

Phong Lee, the firm’s chief executive officer explained in the May 1 statement that MicroStrategy’s “conviction” in its Bitcoin (BTC) investment strategy is as “strong” as ever:

“The conviction in our bitcoin strategy remains strong as the digital asset environment continues to mature.”

In addition to the tax benefit, the firm cashed in $121.9 million in revenue, up 2.2% from the same time last year.

Andrew Kang, the firm’s chief financial officer said the firm also managed to reduce its leverage by repaying its $161 million Bitcoin-backed loan from the now-collapsed Silverage Bank:

“In Q1, we strengthened our capital structure by reducing leverage by fully repaying our bitcoin-backed loan.”

As per previous SEC filings, the business intelligence firm bought 7,500 BTC in Q1 across two purchases on March 23 and April 5 for a total of $179 million.

With the price of BTC at $28,100 currently, MicroStrategy is down around 5.7% on its Bitcoin investment.

The firm was however in the “green” for a period of time last month when BTC skyrocketed to its most recent high of $30,980 on April 15.

The software analytics firm began investing its cash reserves into BTC on March 5, 2021 when it bought 91,064 BTC — 65% of its total holdings today.

Saylor recently revealed that MicroStrategy integrated Bitcoin Lightning into his corporate email address.

The Bitcoin-savvy firm is also in the process of developing a Bitcoin layer-2 Lightning Network-based Software as a Service tool for corporations.

Metaverse division’s $4B loss drags on positive first quarter for Meta

Zuckerberg expects Reality Labs operating losses to increase year-over-year in 2023.

Meta suffered a nearly $4 billion loss from its metaverse unit with Reality Labs in what was otherwise a solid first quarter for the Mark Zuckerberg-led social media empire which posted a final profit of $5.7 billion.

While the $4 billion loss follows a $14 billion loss in 2022, Zuckerberg explained in the earnings report that Reality Labs will likely suffer more losses in the remainder of 2023.

“We continue to expect Reality Labs operating losses to increase year-over-year in 2023,” predicted Zuckerberg.

The losses suffered by Reality Labs were however negated by the firm’s developments in its artificial intelligence (AI) segment, the firm’s chief executive explained.

"Our AI work is driving good results across our apps and business. We're also becoming more efficient so we can build better products faster and put ourselves in a stronger position to deliver our long-term vision.”

While Zuckerberg recently labeled AI as the firm’s “single largest investment,” he said Meta’s metaverse ambitions remain a top priority for the firm.

“A narrative has developed that we're somehow moving away from focusing on the metaverse vision, so I just want to say up front that that's not accurate." he said before adding, "we've been focusing on both AI and the metaverse for years now and we will continue to focus on both.”

In addition, Zuckerberg explained that metaverse tech will help its AI visions and vice versa.

“Metaverse technology will also help deliver AI as well. For example, embodying AI agents will take advantage of the deep investment that we’ve made in Avatars over the last several years.”

Zuckerberg explained in a Feb. 28 Facebook post that the firm is building a suite of creative and expressive tools that can help “turbocharge” the efficiencies of some of its existing products:

“Over the longer term, we'll focus on developing AI personas that can help people in a variety of ways. We're exploring experiences with text (like chat in WhatsApp and Messenger), with images (like creative Instagram filters and ad formats), and with video and multi-modal experiences.”

Though Zuckerberg stated the firm has “a lot of foundational work to do” before it can provide “really futuristic experiences” for its audience.
