Reddit offloads most of its Bitcoin, Ether holdings

The bulk of Reddit’s cryptocurrency sales came from Bitcoin and Ether holdings, with the company reporting that gains from transactions were insignificant. 

Social media network Reddit has sold the majority of its cryptocurrency holdings in the third quarter of 2024, according to a recent filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The majority of the sales originated from treasury holdings in Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH). The 10-Q SEC filing reveals that the net value of the crypto assets and the gains recognized from the sale were deemed insignificant for the period:

According to the document, proceeds from the sale of cryptocurrencies were valued at $6.869 million for the three months ending on Sept. 30.

Fake ‘professors’ use phoney loans to trick victims in latest crypto scam

The scam often starts on a Facebook ad where those interested click the link and are met with a “Letter from the Professor” or “Letter from the Dean” on the company website.

Washington’s financial regulator has warned the public of an emerging crypto scam — where fraudsters pose as business “professors” to trick victims into depositing their hard-earned funds into a crypto scam or face “legal action.”

The “self-proclaimed professors” claim to be part of an “Academy,” “Business School,” or “Wealth Institute,” enticing victims with courses that can result in “exorbitant rates of return,” according to a July 16 statement by the Washington State Department of Financial Institutions (DFI). 

Victims typically come across the investment opportunity on a Facebook ad where they click the link and are met with a “Letter from the Professor” or “Letter from the Dean” on the company website.

Reddit shares jump after-hours on OpenAI data-sharing deal

Reddit said the deal allows OpenAI’s tools to “better understand and showcase Reddit content” with the AI firm back new features on the social platform.

Reddit stock rose 11% in after-hours trading after the social media firm struck a data-sharing deal with OpenAI, the creator of the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot ChatGPT.

Reddit said on May 16 that it will provide OpenAI with access to its data application programming interface (API), which will provide real-time content from posts made on the platform. Reddit said this would “bring Reddit content to ChatGPT and new products.”

In exchange, OpenAI will give Reddit users and moderators a suite of new AI-powered features aimed at strengthening user engagement.
