NFT platform wars could be ahead, says new DappRadar report

OpenSea, UniSwap, MagicEden, eBay, and others are acquiring NFT aggregation tools and taking a stand to gain market share of the evolving NFT ecosystem.

DappRader's Dapp industry report for Q2 2022 raised, among many points, the idea that an upcoming non-fungible platform war could be on the horizon.

The report, which was provided to Cointelegraph, spoke of how UniSwap recently acquired Genie and OpenSea purchased Gem in an effort to expand their respective services to include NFT aggregation tools, which “accumulate NFT offers from various trading platforms”. Meanwhile, newer platforms such as Magic Eden and X2Y2 continue to take from OpenSea’s current 75% NFT marketplace dominance.

Dappradar stated “These acquisitions will most likely pit OpenSea and UniSwap in direct competition with each other in the near future“. Although OpenSea and UniSwap are well-established entities within the crypto space, they both face competition from outside the crypto industry as well. eBay recently acquired the Ethereum-based, digital art market KnownOrigin in an effort to further expand its digital product offering and capabilities in the NFT space.

OpenSea has faced increasing competition with NFT platforms emerging across various blockchains. The report stated that the company “has seen its market share diminished with the arrival of contenders like Magic Eden, LooksRare, and X2Y2.”

CNBC reported in April that OpenSea had “more than 1.5 million active users.” According to current data from DappRadar, the platform added 66.03k users in the last thirty days, compared to MagicEden’s 272.97k. The same DappRadar data also shows MagicEden had 14.1M transactions in the last thirty days and OpenSea had only 955.69k. The report also stated, “This quarter Magic Eden accounts for 10% of all NFTs transactions.”

In recent news, Meta signaled the closure of its Novi wallet after a 10-month pilot program. The average cost of Ethereum gas fees recently fell to the lowest they’ve been since 2020. Also in NFT news, experts have explained how music NFTs will enhance the connection between their creators and fans.

Crypto resonates better with BIS’ vision of ideal monetary system

The report awarded points to the fiat ecosystem for the safety and stability policy while highlighting that “Public oversight has helped achieve safe and robust payment systems.”

In its continued efforts to identify the ideal future monetary system, The Bank of International Settlements (BIS) revealed the edge of the crypto ecosystem over the present-day fiat economy when it comes to fulfilling the policy goals.

While sharing its vision for the future monetary system, the BIS outlined eight high-level goals it hopes to achieve — safety and stability, accountability, efficiency, inclusion, user control over data, integrity, adaptability and openness. In its study, BIS found the crypto ecosystem outweighs the traditional finance when it came to broadly fulfilling the policy goals.

The above table shared by the BIS shows that the current-day fiat economy is far from meeting the requirements of an ideal monetary system. The report awarded points to the fiat ecosystem for the safety and stability policy while highlighting that “public oversight has helped achieve safe and robust payment systems.”

The cryptocurrency ecosystem, however, broadly fulfilled two of the eight policies laid down by the BIS — adaptability and openness. In addition, the report suggested improvements in the inclusion and user control over data policies, which would result in the crypto ecosystem fulfilling half of BIS’ recommendation for an ideal monetary system.

The BIS currently banks on the rise of central bank digital currencies (CBDC) to counter the mainstream adoption of cryptocurrencies. Its vision for the future monetary system involves the use of multi-CBDC arrangements with new data architectures that provide better privacy and control while serving the unbanked.

The BIS Innovation Hub recently shared plans to launch a market intelligence platform as a reaction to the collapse of numerous stablecoins projects and decentralized finance (DeFi) lending platforms. The platform aims to serve as an alternative to unregulated firms for providing data on asset backing, trading volumes and market capitalization.

The Bank of Israel recently commenced its first technological experiment with a CBDC, which examined user privacy and the use of smart contracts in payments.

While the experiment was riddled with a myriad of technical issues, it also highlighted the need to establish a Know Your Customer and an Anti Money Laundering system through a centralized database.

GameFi continues to grow despite crypto winter: DappRadar report

The report seems to show that turbulence in the crypto markets has failed to rattle investments and forward movement of several GameFi and metaverse projects.

Blockchain games were the subject of the latest DappRadar x BGA Games Report #5, published on Tuesday. The report looked at healthy ecosystems and investments coming into the GameFi and metaverse markets.

Several projects were covered in detail in the report, which outlined their continued success and growth. Splinterlands, Illuvium, Galaverse and STEPN have continued to bring new players to their platforms, gain financial interest and expand their businesses.

DappRadar claimed that a common theme between many of these popular projects was the underlying utility provided by the gaming aspect, itself. GameFi and Metaverse projects have begun to utilize nonfungible tokens (NFTs) and crypto tokens in ways other than pure speculation — one example being the NFT shoes in the STEPN move-to-earn (M2E) project, which can be bought and sold in the STEPN metaverse, potentially offering some incentive in addition to the exercise aspects of the game.

The report indicates that gameplay, itself, has, at least partially, demonstrated utility in the context of the Metaverse in Q2 2022. As Bitcoin was declining in early June, the blockchain game Illuvium sold 20,000 land plots, generating 4,018 Ether (ETH) for its developers, worth $72 million at the time the sale took place. The report suggested that Splinterlands has held 350,000 daily unique active wallets (UAW) since May, showing a slight 4% decline from April.

Investments have continued to roll into the space as well. A16z and Dapper Labs invested $1.3B into GameFI and metaverse technologies, seeming to indicate continued venture capital interest and support. Decentralized blockchain Flow also received a $725 million investment from Dapper Labs to support its metaverse related initiatives such as NBA Top Shots.

Metaverse-related technologies still appear to be in an incubation period and likely have a long road ahead. Interoperability issues, security concerns, legal clarity, uses and misuses, market instability and poor market sentiment all continue to be major hurdles for the young technology.

Blockchain investments are disrupting the real estate industry: Report

An in-depth research report delves deep into the market for tokenization of real estate properties worldwide as it surpasses $20 billion in size.

The Cointelegraph Research Terminal, the leading provider of premium databases and institutional-grade research on blockchain and digital assets, has added a new report to its expanding library from the industry leader in tokenization.

This report from Security Token Market and sister company Security Token Advisors covers the rapidly emerging asset-backed real estate tokenization industry. This report has information on the developing shifts in the industry and is a must for any firm or business with a portfolio that encompasses real estate.

The tokenized real estate industry is growing rapidly amid the current market frenzy. With investors looking for a more secure investment that utilizes emerging technology, the demand for blockchain-based investment opportunities backed by real-world assets is increasing. Real estate assets account for upwards of 40% of the pipeline for certain technology providers in the industry, likely making it the largest and most “urgent” sector when it comes to future security token offerings.

To understand what the 2022 landscape looks like, this report sheds light on notable developments and deals. This sector of tokenization offers investors access to high-performing fractionalized investments that can be purchased with cryptocurrency and traded via secondary markets.

Emerging technology, disrupting a traditional market

The existing tokenized real estate market can be broken into the following tranches: assets securitized on the blockchain, assets that are fully tokenized but not actively trading on secondary markets and assets that are fully tokenized and actively trading on secondary markets.

Historyically, real estate has been one of the most illiquid asset classes, perhaps next to hedge funds and private equity. This comes as no surprise, as real estate often involves extensive planning requirements, cost constraints, property management, safety requirements and legal prowess. These variables can cost an investor months and years in time, alongside expenses like unavoidable fees depending on the size and scale of the project. Since the last Cointelegraph Research report, real estate still makes up 89% of the pie in the total securities market; however, the overall pie has grown. The number of commercial real estate deals grew from 2% a few months ago to 3% of the total number of security tokens being invested in.

The tokenization of assets such as real estate allows for these historically illiquid investments to realize additional liquidity. By trading fractionalized portions of a property, investors can enjoy the yield generated by rent and operations without the legal and time-consuming hassles associated with paper-based real estate investing and management.

Market capitalization

Both residential and commercial real estate continue to increase in terms of capitalization over time. In June of 2021, there was a modest $65 million capitalization, but May of 2022 had $194 million in total monthly market capitalization. The aggregate market capitalization of all security tokens is over $16.4 billion, of which real estate is currently around 1.2%. This may seem small now, but it is the largest growing security token sector and should be something to watch closely.
