3 reasons why 2025 is set to be another blockbuster year for Bitcoin and the crypto sector

Increasing political support for cryptocurrencies and advancements within blockchains and artificial intelligence is bound to make 2025 a memorable year for the crypto industry.

2024 was the year crypto stopped being a niche corner of the financial world and became an influential force in the global tech and financial landscape. Unprecedented political support, the rise of AI, RWA, and intense blockchain competition defined the past year, setting the course for what most investors hope will be a bullish 2025.

In a world ravaged by inflation, Bitcoin price went on a tear following its halving in April 2024. Remarkably, this surge wasn’t fueled only by retail investors and Michael Saylor, but also by some of Wall Street’s biggest heavyweights who positioned through the spot Bitcoin ETFs. The momentum even reached Washington, D.C., where President-elect Donald Trump and numerous lawmakers publicly announced their pro-crypto stance.

Meanwhile, smart contract platforms battled for dominance, with Ethereum’s lackluster performance reflecting the rising competition from its rivals. In the Web3 space, new trends stole the spotlight, with tokens linked to AI and RWA becoming the year’s biggest winners.

Nation-state Bitcoin adoption to drive crypto growth in 2025: Fidelity

Fidelity Digital Assets research analyst Matt Hogan said not making any Bitcoin allocation could become more of a risk to nations than making one.

Countries are expected to add Bitcoin into national strategic reserves in 2025, kicking off significant growth in the crypto market, Fidelity Digital Assets said in its latest research paper.

“We anticipate more nation-states, central banks, sovereign wealth funds, and government treasuries will look to establish strategic positions in Bitcoin,” said Fidelity Digital Assets research analyst Matt Hogan in the firm’s Jan. 7 paper titled “2025 Look Ahead.”

He added that these entities may take notice of the playbook employed by Bhutan and El Salvador “and the substantial returns they have been able to glean from such positions in a relatively short amount of time.”

The venture firm expects 2025 to see a proliferation of tokenized securities and the emergence of AI agent "alpha hunters."

Coffee goes onchain as Agridex settles first-ever transaction on Solana

Real-world asset tokenization could become a multitrillion-dollar industry by 2030, according to Boston Consulting Group.

Solana-based real-world asset (RWA) platform Agridex has facilitated its first onchain coffee trade, a move it said could open the door to more cost-effective agricultural commodity transactions.

The transaction was executed by Tiki Tonga Coffee, a United Kingdom-based coffee brand, which exported premium coffee from its home country to South Africa. The payment was made in South African rands and settled in British pounds using the Agridex blockchain.

Tiki Tonga claims the transaction only carried a 0.5% transaction fee, which is a fraction of the 5%–7% fee on typical cross-border transactions involving agricultural commodities. The settlement was also instant, versus the typical five-to-12-day turnaround times using traditional systems.

What’s next for DeFi in 2025?

Industry executives say Bitcoin staking, tokenized RWAs and AI agents will reshape the cryptocurrency ecosystem.

Decentralized finance (DeFi) will hit an inflection point in 2025, as Bitcoin staking, real-world asset (RWA) tokenization, and agentic artificial intelligence (AI) catalyze adoption, several industry executives told Cointelegraph.

In 2024, Bitcoin surpassed $100,000 per coin for the first time as investors poured more than $100 billion into spot BTC exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

“Bitcoin’s (BTC) all-time high will spark renewed interest in crypto from institutions and regulators alike and should reinvigorate the entire crypto sector in 2025,” Dean Tribble, CEO of layer-1 network Agoric Systems, told Cointelegraph.

Securitize proposes BlackRock BUIDL fund as collateral for Frax USD

According to RWA.XYZ, BlackRock's US dollar Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund has roughly $549 million in assets under management.

Securitize, the brokerage firm for the tokenized BlackRock US dollar Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund (BUIDL), has submitted a Frax improvement proposal to add BUIDL as backing collateral for the Frax USD stablecoin.

According to the improvement proposal, using BUIDL as a collateral reserve asset provides yield opportunities, deeper liquidity and transfer options, and reduced counter-party risk due to the backing of the world's largest asset manager, BlackRock.

The proposal is still subject to a community vote before BUIDL — which invests in United States government securities — is added as a reserve asset for the proposed Frax USD stablecoin.
