OpenAI supports California bill on marking AI content — Report

After previously opposing another AI-related bill, SB 1047, OpenAI has expressed support for AB 3211, which would require watermarks on AI-generated content.

The artificial intelligence startup OpenAI, which is behind the ChatGPT chatbot, reportedly supports a new bill that proposes labeling content generated with AI.

OpenAI chief strategy officer Jason Kwon has expressed support for the bill AB 3211, which would require watermarks in the metadata of AI-generated photos, videos and audio clips, Reuters reported on Aug. 26.

According to the source, Kwon believes that marking AI-made material will help users differentiate such content from human-made content. The report noted that the enforcement of the bill would particularly be helpful amid growing misinformation about political candidates.

Microsoft declares OpenAI both ‘strategic partner’ and ‘competition’ in SEC filing

The two companies face antitrust probes in the US and EU over their partnership.

Microsoft wants the feds to view its relationship with OpenAI as more of a frenemies (friends and enemies) situation than a real partnership, judging by a report filed with the SEC in July.

In the filing, a form 10-K periodic financial performance and conditions report, Microsoft declared OpenAI as its rival in several passages while also stating numerous times throughout the document that OpenAI was its “strategic partner.”

Interestingly, Microsoft cites dozens of rivals and “intense competition across all markets” in its statements on competition. These include companies ranging from Apple to Nintendo as well as several software and coding organizations.

OpenAI’s current business model is ‘untenable’ — Report

Technology commentator Edward Zitron claims OpenAI will need to make several changes to "survive" beyond two years, but some industry executives disagree.

ChatGPT maker OpenAI's current business model is unsustainable because of its lack of clear path to profitability and its excessively spending, claims technology commentator Edward Zitron. However, several industry executives disagree.

“I ultimately believe that OpenAI in its current form is untenable,” Zitron declared in his most recent “Where’s Your Ed At?” newsletter. It follows recent reports that OpenAI could lose as much as $5 billion in 2024, putting the company at risk of running out of cash within 12 months.

Zitron asserted that for OpenAI to "survive" beyond 2026, it will need to secure more funding than any startup in the history has ever raised and keep raising it continuously.

OpenAI is building a new AI model under code name ‘Strawberry’ — Report

Strawberry extends on OpenAI’s Q* project announced last November, which some described as a technical breakthrough allowing for the development of “far more powerful” AI models.

ChatGPT maker OpenAI is reportedly building a new AI model called “Strawberry” aimed at making its AI tools reach human-level intelligence through advanced reasoning.

Strawberry would effectively scan the internet autonomously and reliably perform what OpenAI describes as “deep research” — allowing it to solve more complex real-world problems at scale, according to a July 12 report by Reuters.

Elon Musk drops lawsuit against OpenAI CEO Sam Altman

Musk’s decision came one day before a federal judge was set to decide whether to dismiss the case or allow it to proceed to the next stage.

Elon Musk has moved to withdraw his lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman — which accused the artificial intelligence firm of deviating from its original mission to develop AI to benefit humanity, not for profit.

Musk’s attorneys requested to drop the breach of contract lawsuit without prejudice, according to court filings in the San Francisco Superior Court on June 11.

The dismissal without prejudice means the case isn’t dismissed forever and thus allows Musk to file again in the future.
