STKD launches Bitcoin and gold ETF as ‘debasement trade’ gains traction

The fund touts leveraged exposure to Bitcoin and gold as investors brace for inflation and geopolitical strife. 

Fund issuer Stacked, also known as STKD, has launched an exchange-traded fund (ETF) touting leveraged exposure to Bitcoin (BTC) and gold as investors embrace the so-called “debasement trade” ahead of the United States presidential elections in November.

According to the Oct. 16 announcement, STKD Bitcoin & Gold ETF​ (BTGD) aims to offer investors “the opportunity to invest in two scarcity assets that may protect against future inflation and currency debasement.”

The actively managed ETF is designed to deliver $1 of exposure to BTC and $1 to a gold portfolio for every $1 put into the fund. It intends to hold a mix of ETFs and futures tied to the price of BTC and gold.

Prediction markets rise 565% in Q3, fueled by US elections

Decentralized prediction markets could offer more accurate predictions for the US elections than traditional polling systems, according to Elon Musk.

Prediction markets saw significant growth in the third quarter of 2024, driven by bets on the upcoming United States presidential election, which could have wide-reaching effects on cryptocurrency regulations.

The betting volume on prediction markets rose over 565.4% in Q3 to reach $3.1 billion across the three largest markets, up from just $463.3 million in the second quarter of 2024.

The significant growth in prediction market volume was mainly attributed to increasing bets on the outcome of the US elections, according to an Oct. 14 CoinGecko report, which stated:

Former President Trump leads Harris by 10 points — Polymarket

According to Polymarket users, Vice President Kamala Harris is currently favored to win the popular vote by a staggering 72% margin.

Former President Donald Trump is currently leading Vice President Kamala Harris by 10 points on the Polymarket prediction platform — a sharp reversal over betting odds in September.

According to the latest Polymarket data, Trump currently has a 55% chance of securing the Oval Office in November compared to Harris' 45% chance.

The former President also reversed Harris’ lead in 4 of 6 swing states and now leads in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, and Pennsylvania — with Arizona and Georgia representing the GOP candidate's widest margins of victory.

SEC enforcement chief Grewal to step down

The end of his tenure, marked by aggressive cryptocurrency enforcement, could signal a change in the agency’s approach to crypto. 

According to an Oct. 2 announcement, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) chief enforcer, Gurbir Grewal, will step down on Oct. 11 after a stint distinguished by his aggressive policing of the cryptocurrency industry.

The SEC has not chosen Grewal’s permanent replacement but Sanjay Wadhwa, deputy director of the SEC’s enforcement division, will serve as acting director for the time being, the announcement said.

As the SEC’s chief enforcer, Grewal recommended more than 100 enforcement actions “addressing widespread noncompliance in the quickly growing crypto space, including against the operators of the largest crypto asset trading platforms in the world,” the regulator said.

Former President Trump “safe” following gunshots nearby—campaign

The campaign released a statement on Sunday, Sept. 15 about the incident, which the Secret Service says occurred around 2 PM EST.

Former President Trump is "safe" following reports of gunshots "in his vicinity", Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung said in a Sept. 15 statement, that read: “President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time.”

The former President was reportedly playing golf at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida when the gunshots were heard. According to CNN, the golf course was immediately locked down after the incident.

At this point, it is not clear if the incident was an assassination attempt on the former President. However, officials do believe the shooter was attempting to target the President. Donald Trump Jr., the son of the former President, also claimed that an AK-47 rifle was recovered at the scene by law enforcement officials.

According to a 2024 analysis by the Federal Reserve, 7% of adults in the United States currently hold or have used crypto in the past.

As the 2024 election season commences in the United States, the crypto industry and broader community have mobilized to support perceived pro-crypto candidates. Dr. Tonya M. Evans—a tenured law professor at Pennsylvania State University—sat down with Cointelegraph to explain the impact of crypto on the upcoming elections.

According to Dr. Evans, the upcoming presidential race, in particular, will be decided by razor-thin margins—where many issues can potentially swing the vote, including crypto.

However, the law professor also noted: “If you’re a multi-issue voter who happens to also be pro-crypto, you’re far less likely to be swayed by either candidate on this point alone.”
