Musk again asks to block OpenAI’s ‘illegal’ conversion to for-profit model

Elon Musk also claimed OpenAI had engaged in “predatory practices” through its partnership with Microsoft, together owning nearly 70% of the generative AI market.

Billionaire Elon Musk has filed another motion to block ChatGPT-creator firm OpenAI from converting to a for-profit enterprise while also alleging it has been engaging in anti-competitive practices.

Musk accused OpenAI, its CEO Sam Altman, President Greg Brockman and stakeholder Microsoft of violating terms of Musk’s “foundational contributions to the charity,” according to the motion for a preliminary injunction filed on Nov. 30.

Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015 and was an early board member until he left the company in 2018.

Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, hits record $348B net worth

The new wealth record has been driven by a Tesla stock surge late last week and a $50 billion funding round for Musk’s AI startup.

Tesla CEO and tech billionaire Elon Musk is now richer than ever, with his net worth soaring to $348 billion, a new record high stemming from Donald Trump’s victory in the United States presidential election.

Elon Musk’s net worth hit an all-time high of $347.8 billion by the end of trading on Friday, Nov. 22, propelled by Tesla’s stock (TSLA) rally and a new $50 million funding round valuing his artificial intelligence startup xAI at $50 billion.

The previous peak of $335 billion was reached on Nov. 12, with Musk seeing almost a billion dollars per day added to his net worth over the past fortnight. Since the beginning of the year, Musk’s net worth has increased by 52%, which equates to a whopping $119 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Elon Musk denies Tesla will pay xAI for AI technology partnership

The clarification comes after a news report stated Musk’s AI startup has discussed sharing its technology with Tesla and in return would earn revenue from the carmaker.

Elon Musk, owner of the social media platform X, has clarified that his artificial intelligence startup xAI is not looking to earn revenue from Tesla in exchange for sharing its technology.

The clarification comes after a Wall Street Journal report claimed that xAI has discussed sharing its technology with Tesla and in return would earn revenue from the carmaker.

“The xAI models are gigantic, containing, in compressed form, most of human knowledge, and couldn’t possibly run on the Tesla vehicle inference computer, nor would we want them to,” Musk wrote in a Sept. 8 X post.

Tesla investors sue Elon Musk for diverting resources, talent to xAI

Shareholders accused Tesla boss Elon Musk of “brazen disloyalty” with his xAI startup that created “billions in AI-related value at a company other than Tesla.”

Tesla shareholders sued CEO Elon Musk and the vehicle maker’s board on Thursday, claiming Musk’s xAI startup is a “competing company” taking artificial intelligence talent and resources from the firm.

It comes the same day shareholders voted to restore Musk’s $44.9 billion pay package that a Delaware judge threw out in January.

Cleveland Bakers and Teamsters Pension Fund, Daniel Hazen and Michael Giampietro filed the June 13 stockholder complaint in Delaware’s Chancery Court on behalf of Tesla.

Elon Musk drops lawsuit against OpenAI CEO Sam Altman

Musk’s decision came one day before a federal judge was set to decide whether to dismiss the case or allow it to proceed to the next stage.

Elon Musk has moved to withdraw his lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman — which accused the artificial intelligence firm of deviating from its original mission to develop AI to benefit humanity, not for profit.

Musk’s attorneys requested to drop the breach of contract lawsuit without prejudice, according to court filings in the San Francisco Superior Court on June 11.

The dismissal without prejudice means the case isn’t dismissed forever and thus allows Musk to file again in the future.

Elon Musk launches AI chatbot ‘Grok’ — says it can outperform ChatGPT

Grok costs $16 per month on X Premium Plus. But for now it is only offered to a limited number of users in the United States.

Elon Musk and his artificial intelligence startup xAI have released “Grok” — an AI chatbot which can supposedly outperform OpenAI’s first iteration of ChatGPT in several academic tests.

The motivation behind building Gruk is to create AI tools equipped to assist humanity by empowering research and innovation, Musk and xAI explained in a Nov. 5 X (formerly Twitter) post.

Musk and the xAI team said a “unique and fundamental advantage” possessed by Grok is that it has real-time knowledge of the world via the X platform.

“It will also answer spicy questions that are rejected by most other AI systems,” Muska and xAI said. "Grok is designed to answer questions with a bit of wit and has a rebellious streak, so please don’t use it if you hate humor!"

The engine powering Grok — Grok-1 — was evaluated in several academic tests in mathematics and coding, performing better than ChatGPT-3.5 in all tests, according to data shared by xAI.

However it didn’t outperform OpenAI’s most advanced version, GPT-4, across any of the tests.

“It is only surpassed by models that were trained with a significantly larger amount of training data and compute resources like GPT-4, Musk and xAI said. “This showcases the rapid progress we are making at xAI in training LLMs with exceptional efficiency.”

The AI startup noted that Grok will be accessible on X Premium Plus at $16 per month. But for now, it is only offered to a limited number of users in the United States.

Grok still remains a “very early beta product” which should improve rapidly by the week, xAI noted.

The xAI team said they will also implement more safety measures over time to ensure Grok isn’t used maliciously.

“We believe that AI holds immense potential for contributing significant scientific and economic value to society, so we will work towards developing reliable safeguards against catastrophic forms of malicious use.”

“We believe in doing our utmost to ensure that AI remains a force for good,” xAI added.

The AI startup's launch of Grok comes eight months after Musk founded the firm in March.
