AMC Entertainment CEO briefs community on crypto, NFT project updates in latest earnings call

"The regulatory framework surrounding cryptocurrency is going to change dramatically, so we always believe in staying on the right side of the law," says Adam Aron, CEO of AMC Entertainment.

During its Q4 2021 earnings call late Tuesday, Adam Aron, CEO of iconic theatre-chain AMC Entertainment, briefed the community on the company's latest crypto adoption efforts. As told by Aron, AMC will start accepting Dogecoin (DOGE) and Shiba Inu (SHIB) "in a couple of weeks." AMC began accepting online payments for movie tickets via major cryptocurrencies last year. The company said it is also still exploring options to issue its own coin, an idea that has been in the making for quite some time as it monitors the current cryptocurrency regulatory framework.

Aron also shared his praise for the blockchain industry: "We continue to explore how else AMC can participate in the burgeoning crypto universe, and we remain quite intrigued by the potential business opportunity." Aron then added:

"AMC also picked up the capability to accept Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal online. Incredibly, in just a few months, these latter three forms of payment, along with cryptocurrency, already constitute more than 15% of our online ticketing activity, as was seen in the fourth quarter of 2021."

But AMC has also been making grounds in the nonfungible tokens, or NFTs, space. Since last November, the company has completed four NFT campaigns, with more than 800,000 NFTs made available to consumers. These include NFTs offered as part of ticket sales for Spider-Man, Dune and The Batman movies, and those given to shareholders as part of AMC investor connect. The company plans to roll out more NFT projects this year, both jointly with studios and on its own, citing its potential to increase attendance at AMC theatres. According to Aron, AMC's Spider-Man NFTs have sold for as high as $17,000 in secondary markets.

AMC dropped an NFT to its shareholders, Puppy Bowl will feature an NFT sale on Chronicle, and Naomi Osaka launched her third collection.

AMC shareholders gifted free NFT

The AMC movie theater chain dropped NFTs to all AMC shareholders on Tuesday.

As part of the reward, AMC CEO Adam Aron tweeted that the NFT and a WAX wallet in which to hold it will be free to claim for up to a year.

The NFTs, dubbed ‘I Own AMC,’ show a sizable cordoned off medal with the company’s namesake across the middle as a grandiose kind of thank-you.

AMC has embraced cryptocurrency more and more since its stock (AMC) became the target of a retail stock buying craze led by r/Wallstreetbets that started with GameStop.

In Sept. 2021, Aron tweeted that the company would begin accepting Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), and Bitcoin Cash (BCH) as payment at its theater locations by the end of 2022.

Aron has been teasing Doge and Shiba fans about adding their favorite memecoin as a payment option. On Jan. 7, he tweeted that his company was “well on track for the promised Q1 implementation” of accepting Dogecoin (DOGE) and Shiba Inu (SHIB) as payment.

Damien Hirst giveaway

Renowned British NFT artist Damien Hirst has airdropped 10,000 NFTs to those who had previously purchased artwork from his “The Currency” collection.

The giveaway is from the new NFT collection “Great Expectations” which is a series that contains 10,000 images based on his Certified Lover Boy artwork.

The collection is based on the artwork for the cover of “Certified Lover Boy”, the sixth studio album by Canadian rapper Drake. On Nov. 26, Hirst commented:

“I tried to create an image that sums up the powerful hope filled love, humor & daring truth in the music of Drake for his album cover and now my hope is that with this free gift you can all share and feel the excitement I feel about NFTS and the digital world.”

3D NFTs on ICP

Dfinity’s Internet Computer Network (ICP) is launching NFT Studio, a 3D and interactive NFT platform enabling creators to design, mint, and stake regular and interactive 3D NFTs.

The platform includes a 3D voxel engine and a pixel engine which allows users to create 3D models that can be converted into NFTs and used in video games.

Lukas Merville, founder and team lead at NFT Studio, said that 3D creators are often limited on networks such as Ethereum or Solana which cannot handle large files sizes, before adding “3D NFTs sounded like fiction — well beyond the current state of blockchain technology. But we have made them possible on-chain thanks to the Internet Computer.”

There are a number of NFT collections already running on the ICP such as ICPunks, ICPuppies, and ICKitties.
