Indian crypto exchange WazirX struggles to recover funds 60 days after hack

WazirX’s $235 million hack recovery efforts face hurdles as internal findings yield little to no significant breakthroughs.

Two months after hackers managed to steal over $230 million from India-based crypto exchange WazirX, the status of customer funds remains in doubt as the exchange and its custody provider, Liminal, continue to play the blame game.

Both firms continue to accuse the other of being at fault for the breach that allowed the hacker to steal customer funds, and there appears to be no resolution in sight, especially with internal investigations seemingly moving ahead at a snail’s pace.

Most recently, the firm faced legal threats from its customers, with the most notable pursuant being another rival exchange, CoinSwitch. The company initiated legal action against Wazir to recover 2% of its funds worth approximately $6.2 million.

Bitcoin ETF security concerns mount after FBI warns of North Korean hackers

North Korean hackers are reportedly targeting the billions of dollars in BTC and ETH held by crypto ETF custodians.

The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation announced on Sept. 3 that North Korean scammers and hackers were targeting firms associated with cryptocurrency-related exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

Despite the billions of dollars flowing into these crypto ETFs, investors may be too quick to assume their assets are fully secure.

North Korean hacker groups such as Lazarus Group are no strangers to the cryptocurrency industry and are suspected of committing a number of hacks against prominent exchanges and blockchain protocols.

Home invaders used machete, Toblerone to rob a man of his Bitcoin

Scottish authorities tracked, traced, and seized Bitcoin stolen during a 2020 home invasion, marking the first robbery in Scotland to involve cryptocurrency tracing.

Scottish prosecutors have seized and converted 23.5 Bitcoin into cash from a 2020 robbery that saw three men armed with a machete and a Toblerone chocolate bar break into a home near Glasgow.

The case — initially heard last year — “was the first robbery in Scotland to involve tracing stolen cryptocurrency,” said Detective Inspector Craig Potter from Police Scotland’s Cyber Investigations unit.

In a first for the country, prosecutors used proceeds of crime legislation to seize and convert the Bitcoin (BTC) stolen in the March 2020 robbery into cash, BBC News reported on Sept. 2.

DOJ recommends harsher sentences AI-enhanced crimes

Using AI to plan, commit, or help cover up a plan could lead to harsher sentencing in the US soon.

The United States Department Justice (DOJ) has asked the United States Sentencing Commission to update its guidelines to provide additional penalties for crimes committed with the aid of artificial intelligence.

According to a legal alert published by the law offices of White & Case, the recommendations seek to expand well beyond established guidelines and would apply not only to crimes committed with AI, but to any crime aided or abetted by even simple algorithms.

Current guidelines, per the legal alert, only cover so-called “sophisticated” systems. Ostensibly, the new guidelines would make AI involved in criminal activity an accessory, with the legal system punishing the person responsible for its application to criminal activity.
