Dip in trading at Binance and other major crypto exchanges confounds experts

Experts are having trouble explaining why trading is slumping at the same time that Bitcoin prices rise. Are geopolitical tensions to blame.

Spot-market trading volume at Binance sagged 23% in September – to $344 billion – its lowest monthly mark since November 2023, CCData reported last week.

And Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, wasn't alone.

Other mainstream exchanges, including OKX, HTX, Coinbase, Kraken, and Bybit reported month-on-month declines of 25%, 24%, 30%, 25% and 20%, respectively, Jacob Joseph, senior research analyst at CCData, told Cointelegraph on Oct. 8.

Crypto.com’s lawsuit against the US SEC follows the exchange’s receipt of a Wells notice from the agency.

Major cryptocurrency exchange and service provider Crypto.com is launching a legal battle against the United States Securities and Exchange Commission with the goal of protecting the future of the crypto industry in the country.

Kris Marszalek, co-founder and CEO of Crypto.com, took to X on Oct. 8 to officially announce that the company has filed a suit against the US SEC.

“This unprecedented action by our company against a federal agency is a warranted response to the SEC’s regulation by enforcement regime, which has hurt more than 50 million American crypto holders,” he wrote.

Traders can now hedge exposure to memecoins including PEPE and FLOKI.

Crypto.com’s North American derivatives exchange, Nadex, has listed derivatives contracts tied to memecoins including PEPE and FLOKI, according to Oct. 7 filings with the United States Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).

Nadex has also listed derivatives products tied to Dogelon Mars (ELON) and BONK, according to the filings.

The combined market capitalization of the four memecoins underlying Nadex’s contracts is nearly $7 billion, according to CoinMarketCap.

While Binance and other centralized exchanges saw activity decline in September, Crypto.com witnessed its trading volume reach an all-time high.

Global crypto exchange Binance experienced a significant decline in trading activity in September.

According to a CCData report, trading volume for derivatives on Binance fell by 21% to $1.25 trillion in September, the lowest level since October 2023. With the decline in activity, the exchange’s derivatives market share stood at 40.7% at the end of the month — the lowest since September 2020.

The downward trend also affected spot trading volume, which dropped by 22.9% to $344 billion, marking the lowest monthly spot volume since November 2023. The decline in spot trading reduced Binance’s market share to 27%, the lowest since January 2021.
