Crypto Biz: Amid crypto carnage, Goldman and Barclays fill their bags, May 12-18, 2022

Some of the world's biggest banks are increasing their exposure to the digital asset market despite the recent market volatility. Is this a sign of things to come?

Has there ever been a worse time to be in crypto? It depends on how you look at it. Amid Terra’s death spiral, Bitcoin (BTC) recording seven-consecutive weekly red candles, over $1 trillion in lost market cap across the ecosystem and an aggressive Federal Reserve hell-bent on reversing the chaos it created, major banks are quietly increasing their exposure to the sector. You’re going to love this: Goldman Sachs — once the most passionate Bitcoin detractors — and Barclays are doing some strategic buying as they prepare for the future of crypto trading.

Early polling from Terra vote indicates 91% are in favor of ‘rebirth’

The Terra saga took an interesting turn on Wednesday after Terra co-founder Do Kwon managed to convince network validators to accept a proposal that would salvage the blockchain without the algorithmic stablecoin, TerraUSD (UST). More than 91% of community votes were in favor of “rebirthing” the Terra network and doing away with UST entirely. The “old” blockchain would continue to support so-called “residual UST” holders and operate under the name — wait for it — Terra Classic. All is not well for the Terra ecosystem, however. Kwon has been summoned for a parliamentary hearing regarding his failed project, while three members of Terraform Labs’ legal team resigned this week.

Goldman Sachs and Barclays invest in UK crypto trading platform Elwood

Goldman Sachs and Barclays made headlines this week after they revealed a strategic investment in United Kingdom-based crypto trading platform Elwood. Why is this important? Aside from the fact that I like to dunk on Goldman every chance I get for its past anti-Bitcoin propaganda, the investment further cements the fact that major banks view crypto as a new asset class with a strong institutional appeal. That’s basically what Goldman’s global head of digital assets said. You can read about Elwood’s $500 million funding round below.

Bitcoin investment giant Grayscale debuts ETF in Europe

Grayscale has finally launched an exchange-traded fund (ETF). Okay, not the one we’re all waiting for, but it’s still a notable achievement nonetheless. Grayscale Future of Finance UCITS ETF is the digital asset manager’s first European ETF and will track the performance of the Bloomberg Grayscale Future of Finance Index. The fund doesn’t invest in crypto outright but provides exposure to companies directly involved in the digital asset ecosystem — miners and trading apps especially.

BitMEX launches spot crypto exchange following $30M penalty

Crypto derivatives exchange BitMEX — home of the now-infamous liquidation cascades — is moving beyond offering just derivatives by launching a spot trading platform. BitMEX Spot Exchange gives investors the ability to trade seven crypto pairs, including Bitcoin, Ether (ETH), Chainlink (LINK) and Tether (USDT) — without the ability to get absolutely wrecked in the process. BitMEX recently cleared $30 million in civil penalties after the company’s cofounders, including Arthur Hayes, pleaded guilty to violating the Bank Secrecy Act.

How will you survive the bear market?

I’ll be honest: Crypto’s implosion over the past few months has been unlike anything I’ve ever seen. A lot of investors are in extreme pain right now. Trust me, I’ve been there. I’m not going to sugarcoat your losses or fill this page with cliches, but as famed value investor Benjamin Graham once observed: “Abnormally good or abnormally bad conditions do not last forever.” This week’s edition of The Market Report dissects the current bear market and gives you a few survival tips to come out the other side stronger than ever.

Goldman Sachs and Barclays invest in UK crypto trading platform Elwood

The global head of digital assets for Goldman Sachs said the demand for cryptocurrency from institutions is rising and the firm has been “actively broadening” its market capabilities to cater to that demand.

Banking giants Goldman Sachs and Britain’s Barclays have joined a $70 million Series A funding round for the institutional crypto trading platform Elwood Technologies, founded by billionaire British hedge fund manager Alan Howard.

Joining the round was crypto-friendly German bank Commerzbank, crypto investment manager Galaxy Digital, and Dawn Capital as reported by the Financial Times on May 15. The fundraising round valued the company at around $500 million according to the report.

Despite the recent fall in crypto markets, Elwood said it's betting that traditional financial institutions such as hedge funds and banks will still be interested in investing in cryptocurrencies. Elwood's funding round was already agreed to and in motion before the latest drop in prices which has seen roughly 15% wiped off the total crypto market cap since May 9 according to CoinMarketCap.

Elwood Technologies CEO James Stickland said the fundraising was “another validation of the longevity of crypto” brushing off the falling prices from the last few weeks:

“We’re getting investment from financial institutions that aren’t expecting to get massive returns in 15 minutes. They’re investing in the infrastructure, I think it’s a reassurance message.”

Elwood Technologies provides a crypto portfolio management system with crypto market information and trading infrastructure for institutional investors that features an interface that connects to crypto exchanges, liquidity providers, and custodians.

Commenting on the deal Goldman Sachs’ global head of digital assets Mathew McDermott said the investment showed the firm has “continued commitment” to cryptocurrencies, adding:

“As institutional demand for cryptocurrency rises, we have been actively broadening our market presence and capabilities to cater for client demand.”

The funding from Goldman Sachs marks the bank's further expansion into crypto assets. The investment bank was the first to offer a loan backed by Bitcoin (BTC) to crypto exchange Coinbase in early May. It has long seen an interest in the space, even referring to digital assets and the Metaverse as “megatrends” in March.

Another case of the Wall Street giant cozying to crypto firms saw a meeting between Goldman CEO David Solomon and FTX boss Sam Bankman-Fried which included an offer from Solomon to help FTX with future funding rounds and regulatory compliance.

As for Elwood Technologies, it will remain majority-owned by Alan Howard who was the main investor before the Series A round. Howard co-founded the hedge fund Brevan Howard which launched its crypto investment division “BH Digital” in September 2021.

Goldman Sachs offers first Bitcoin-backed loan as Wall Street embraces crypto

Goldman Sachs has offered its first Bitcoin-backed loan, showing further signs of increased interest in cryptocurrency from Wall St institutions.

Goldman Sachs has offered its first Bitcoin-backed loan, in a major step forward for institutional cryptocurrency adoption on Wall St.

A spokeswoman from Goldman told Bloomberg that the multinational investment bank had lent cash collateralized by Bitcoin (BTC) owned by the borrower for the first time in Goldman Sachs’ history. She added that the deal was particularly interesting because of its structure and 24-hour risk management.

Such a loan allows for a Bitcoin holder to borrow fiat currency such as the US dollar, by fronting up their BTC as collateral to the bank. The underlying volatility of Bitcoin can make these loans risky — if the price of bitcoin drops too far the borrower may be required to increase their collateral, otherwise they risk getting liquidated.

Last month, Goldman, which now sports its own in-house digital assets team, executed their first over-the-counter (OTC) crypto transaction in collaboration with the trading unit of Michael Novogratz’s crypto investment firm Galaxy Digital.

Goldman is not alone in its foray into digital assets, with fellow Wall St banks ramping up their movements into the cryptocurrency space as well.

On Wednesday multi-trillion dollar asset management firm BlackRock announced the launch of a blockchain-focused ETF. Earlier this month the firm also announced its involvement in a $400M funding round and partnership with Circle, the principal operator of the USDC stablecoin.

While overcollateralized crypto-backed loans have been a staple in the world of decentralized finance (DeFi) for some time — the crypto-collateralized loan is becoming an alternative method for institutions and governments looking to gain increased access to capital.

El Salvador is currently in the process of securing finances for its volcano bond; a Bitcoin-backed government bond that will be used to amass $1 billion in funding for the development of “Bitcoin City” and to increase the size of the country’s Bitcoin reserves.
