Julian Assange campaign to hold metaverse political rally against extradition

Julian Assange is currently locked in a London jail fighting a four-year court battle against his extradition to the US.

The “Don’t Extradite Assange Campaign,” dedicated to gathering support against the extradition of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange to the United States, is launching a virtual political rally in the metaverse.

Assange has been confined within Belmarsh Prison in London since April 2019, fighting a court battle against his extradition to the U.S., where he could potentially face up to 175 years in prison on charges of espionage for leaking information about the wrongdoings of the US agencies in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Assange founded WikiLeaks, which have been known to publish classified and sensitive information against wrongdoings of various governments in the public domain. However, his journalistic work exposing governments has made him a primary target of several agencies, especially in the United States.

The Julian Assange campaign, backed by Assange and his family, has planned the virtual political rally in a bid to appeal to more people and gather support against the extradition after his last appeal in June against the extradition was rejected by the United Kingdom court.

The virtual event will be held on Aug. 26 in Wistaverse, a not-for-profit metaverse in The Sandbox ecosystem on the Polygon blockchain. The political rally will see speeches by Stella Assange, wife of Julian Assange, Kristinn Hrafnsson, the co-founder and editor-in-chief of WikiLeaks, and other high-profile guests, including British politician Jeremy Corbyn, the former leader of the country’s Labour Party. The speakers at the rally will appear either as characters inside the event or with filmed contributions shown on screens.

Cointelegraph got in touch with John Rees, the founder and director of the Don’t Extradite Assange Campaign, who said that they selected to hold a virtual rally in the hope of reaching a wider audience. Rees added that the reason for the rally is:

“To publicize the Assange case and to mobilize people for the protest at the court. To make sure that people know that this is the 11th hour in the Assange case and that if the government goes ahead with extradition a very real blow will have been struck against the freedom of the press.“

The rally will take place in a virtual auditorium designed to look like the Royal Courts of Justice in London, where Assange is set to face his final appeal in the U.K. court system. The virtual environment “dedicated to protests and social action” will feature a recorded message from Assange, as well.

Many organizations involved in civil rights and freedom of the press have supported Assange following the WikiLeaks publication and urged U.S. authorities to drop the case for extradition. Amid former U.S. President Donald Trump’s final days in office — prior to the Capitol insurrection on January 6, 2021 — crypto users donated more than $400,000 to Assange’s defense team in hopes of a presidential pardon, while a decentralized autonomous organization raised $53 million for the WikiLeaks co-founder in 2022.

$53 million raised for Assange showed the power of DAOs

In an exclusive interview with Cointelegraph, AssangeDAO's core members explain how a decentralized autonomous organization could obtain the release of Julian Assange.

“DAOs are very powerful token-based coordination mechanism that any person now can wield outside of the legacy financial system”, said Silke Noa, core-member of the AssangeDAO, which recently raised $53 million in support of Wikileak's founder, Julian Assange.

According to Noa, the fundraising campaign was "a huge success" that showed how the power of a DAO can have an impact on political and social issues. The DAO mechanism allowed anyone willing to support Assange's to make a donation in ETH and become a member of the organization.

In exchange, AssangeDAO members received a proportional amount of governance tokens, JUSTICE, which will allow them to vote on how the raised funds will be spent and on future initiatives aimed at supporting the cause of the whistleblower.

“It really sends a message, a political message that there is some political cost to this persecution of Julian”, said Julian Assange's brother, Gabriel Shipton, commenting on the successful campaign.

The money raised will be used to pay for Julian Assange’s legal expenses and campaigning in favor of his release from the UK prison, where he has been held for nearly three years.

Assange recently appealed a UK court’s decision that could have him extradited to the US, where he may be convicted to a life sentence for publishing classified documents. Assange's supporters see him as a champion of the free press.

“The most immediate result would be the UK approving Julian's appeal and rejecting the extradition.”, said Shipton. "The holy grail of all this is that the charges in the US had dropped in and those powers stopped pursuing Julian for publishing their secrets", he added.

The AssangeDAO managed to raise the funds by bidding in an NFT auction called "Censored" by Assange and digital artist Pak. The NFT auction consisted of a 1/1 piece called "Clock" and an open piece where each participant could mint his own NFT. Those NFTs cannot be traded until Assange will be free.

“Now have 30,000 collectors who have an interest in setting Julian free so they can trade their Julian and Pak "Censored" NFT”.

AssangeDAO concludes raise with $53M to help Julian fight for freedom

The AssangeDAO pulled in 17,422 Ether from 10,000 people, with the funds set to be used to win the NFT auction that is supporting Assange’s legal battles.

The Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) supporting Wikileaks founder Julian Assange’s legal plight has concluded its raise, generating a whooping 17,422 Ether (ETH) worth roughly $53.7 million.

As previously reported by Cointelegraph, the AssangeDAO intends to use the fund to bid on a one-of-one NFT from a drop called “Censored” by digital artist Pak in collaboration with Assange. The proceeds of the sale will go towards Assange’s defense fund and additional awareness campaigns as he fights extradition to the U.S. this month.

Assange has been languishing in a U.K. jail for the past three years, with U.S. prosecutors seeking to try him on espionage charges. Supporters say that Assange is a whistleblower, journalist and publisher.

At the time of writing, Pak and Assange’s “One Thousand Thirty Four” one-of-one NFT has a current top bid of 4,242.42 Ether ($13 million) with the auction set to close later today. The NFT collection was launched on Feb. 7, which was also the deadline for Assange’s lawyers to plead their case against his extradition.

The Assange DAO’s $53.7 million figure marks the largest ever raise from a DAO using the community funding hosting platform Juicebox, ousting the widely popular ConstitutionDAO which raised $49 million from the community in late 2021 to bid on a copy of the 1st edition print copy of the United States Constitution.

More than 10,000 people backed the fundraiser, showing strong support for Assange and the values around transparency that he and Wikileaks stands for.

Pak spoke to Artnet earlier this week, and outlined that Assange’s cause was precisely what they were looking for as the message behind their latest drop:

“I am in love with creating different mechanisms to communicate my messages. For ‘Censored,’ the drop needed a good reason to exist and Julian was just the perfect fit.”

“The biggest message is censored as usual,” they added.

The Censored drop also includes an open edition with unlimited mints within a specific time frame, and Pak stated that the proceeds will be donated to “information freedom, digital privacy, education, health, and human and animal rights” organizations.

“In other words, everything that is censored eventually returns to the people,” they said.
