LimeWire’s new game simulates music pirating nostalgia and pays in crypto

LimeWire's retro music downloading game revives the look of its platform from the early 2000s and offers players the chance to win crypto.

A new game aimed at reviving the nostalgia of pirating music with the added bonus of crypto rewards has been launched by the former peer-to-peer file-sharing platform turned nonfungible token (NFT) marketplace LimeWire.

On April 13, the historic music-downloading platform, wildly popular in the early 2000s was revived and turned to Web3 in the form of a retro music-downloading game themed on the Microsoft Windows XP operating system.

Players need to enter their email addresses to play the browser-based game that prompts them to search for old early 2000s music and movies to download.

The simulation will provide a list of songs or movies from that era for players to choose to “download” within a time limit. Each simulated download that doesn’t contain a simulated “virus” will yield points to the player.

The scores are entered onto a leaderboard with the top players eligible to receive a distribution of LimeWire’s upcoming ERC-20 token, LMWR.

LimeWire was re-launched in mid-2022 as an NFT marketplace with the aim to become a leading creator content marketplace and membership platform.

The original file-sharing platform was shut down in 2010 after a federal copyright infringement court case and the LimeWire NFT marketplace has no connection to the original platform or its team.

Cointelegraph contacted LimeWire for further details but did not receive an immediate response.

AMC Entertainment CEO briefs community on crypto, NFT project updates in latest earnings call

"The regulatory framework surrounding cryptocurrency is going to change dramatically, so we always believe in staying on the right side of the law," says Adam Aron, CEO of AMC Entertainment.

During its Q4 2021 earnings call late Tuesday, Adam Aron, CEO of iconic theatre-chain AMC Entertainment, briefed the community on the company's latest crypto adoption efforts. As told by Aron, AMC will start accepting Dogecoin (DOGE) and Shiba Inu (SHIB) "in a couple of weeks." AMC began accepting online payments for movie tickets via major cryptocurrencies last year. The company said it is also still exploring options to issue its own coin, an idea that has been in the making for quite some time as it monitors the current cryptocurrency regulatory framework.

Aron also shared his praise for the blockchain industry: "We continue to explore how else AMC can participate in the burgeoning crypto universe, and we remain quite intrigued by the potential business opportunity." Aron then added:

"AMC also picked up the capability to accept Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal online. Incredibly, in just a few months, these latter three forms of payment, along with cryptocurrency, already constitute more than 15% of our online ticketing activity, as was seen in the fourth quarter of 2021."

But AMC has also been making grounds in the nonfungible tokens, or NFTs, space. Since last November, the company has completed four NFT campaigns, with more than 800,000 NFTs made available to consumers. These include NFTs offered as part of ticket sales for Spider-Man, Dune and The Batman movies, and those given to shareholders as part of AMC investor connect. The company plans to roll out more NFT projects this year, both jointly with studios and on its own, citing its potential to increase attendance at AMC theatres. According to Aron, AMC's Spider-Man NFTs have sold for as high as $17,000 in secondary markets.

Regal to partner with Flexa to enable digital currency payments in theatres

Customers will be able to purchase movie tickets and concessions with crypto at over 500 Regal cinemas.

On Tuesday morning, Regal, a movie operator of more than 500 locations and 7,000 screens in 42 states plus D.C., announced it would be partnering with digital payment network Flexa to enable its customers to pay with crypto for movie tickets, food, and beverage. Regal will accept a wide variety of coins and tokens, such as Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), Doge (DOGE), USD Coin (USDC), DAI (DAI), Gemini Dollar (GUSD), Chainlink (LINK), Cosmos (ATOM), Basic Attention Token (BAT), and more.

Flexa is known for its ability to guarantee payments for real-world applications. In times of peak activity on blockchains such as BTC or ETH, it can take hours or days for transactions to be verified. By leveraging the market value of its underlying ERC-20 token Amp as collateral, Flexa says it can ensure that the transactions it handles will always go through. Meanwhile, Amp token holders earn a reward for putting their capital at risk.

Ken Thewes, Chief Marketing Officer at Regal, said the following in regards to the development:

This exciting partnership enables us to easily and seamlessly accept digital currencies [...] across our theatre footprint in a simple and completely contactless way, providing our guests with the flexibility and safety they deserve as we embark on a new era.

Trevor Filter, co-founder of Flexa, added:

We're very pleased to partner with Regal as we work to enable universal digital currency payment options for movies and more, and help bring the future of payments to cinema.

Regal isn't the only theatre chain in the country that's adopting cryptocurrency. Earlier this month, AMC began accepting BTC for online movie ticket purchases. AMC's CEO also received overwhelmingly positive feedback asking if costumers wanted the company to accept Shiba Inu as payment in a Twitter poll.

Calling the crypto space ‘a very masculine area,’ Mila Kunis launches NFT project

Following a deep dive, the actress said she found the crypto space to be "really empowering," which led to the creation of the Stoner Cats animation.

An actress famous for her roles in That '70s Show and Family Guy, Mila Kunis has now launched an animation on the blockchain, which developed from an interest in crypto during the pandemic.

Speaking with comedian Conan O’Brien on his Thursday show, Kunis said she had done a deep dive into cryptocurrencies and nonfungible tokens, or NFTs, during her time in quarantine. However, she was seemingly concerned about the apparent dearth of women in the space.

“I felt like it was a very masculine area — like everybody that I knew that knew anything about it at the time was always a man and I was like ‘this can’t be that hard,’” said Kunis. “I just deep dived into it and surrounded myself with two incredibly smart women that know everything about it.”

The actress said she spoke with women behind the Facebook-backed Libra, now Diem, token project. After learning more about crypto and its role in a decentralized marketplace, Kunis said she found the whole crypto space to be "really empowering," which led to her new NFT project, Stoner Cats.

Partnering with CryptoKitties founder Mack Flavelle and CryptoPoops NFT creator Jonathan Howard through their recent endeavor Big Head Club and others, Kunis described the Stoner Cats project as allowing crypto users to buy NFTs featuring images of cats sometimes drinking and smoking marijuana — recreational cannabis has been legal in California since 2016. The token then allows them to “watch a five-minute long piece of entertainment.”

“Everybody just did [the project] because they thought that it was different and fun and we all wanted to do it for the right reasons,” said Kunis, who voices one of the cats. “It brings ownership of content back to the artist and cuts out the middleman.”

The price of the tokens is not yet listed, but NFT offerings from celebrities have often netted millions in sales. Canadian musician Claire Elise Boucher, better known as Grimes, auctioned off her own line of NFTs in March — users paid $5.8 million for the tokenized artwork in 20 minutes.

According to Kunis, the cat NFTs will be available by early July.
