FTX seeks to reverse payments made to Shaq, Naomi Osaka and Miami Heat

FTX laid out the millions it paid to the likes of Shaquille O’Neal, Naomi Osaka and other high-profile people it’s looking to get back.

Bankrupt crypto exchange FTX is probing if it can reclaim the millions of dollars paid to celebrity athletes and sports teams that promoted the exchange before it filed for bankruptcy last November.

In an over 180 page Aug. 31 court filing, FTX’s financial advisors laid out a detailed list of high-profile figures and businesses it paid in its marketing efforts to see if they’re under rules allowing bankrupt companies to reverse the payments.

The list includes $750,000 made to former basketball pro Shaquille O’Neal, over $300,000 to Tennis pro Naomi Osaka, over $270,000 to former baseball star David Ortiz and over $200,000 to American football quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

Also included are nearly $420,000 made to pro basketball team the Golden State Warriors and over $250,000 in various payments to Miami Heat.

The filing warned, however, that the final amount FTX may recover from the efforts “may vary materially from the amount reported.”

Many of the celebrities named in FTX’s recent filing have faced class action lawsuits from FTX users seeking damages.

O’Neal, Osaka and the Golden State Warriors have been sued by groups of FTX customers over allegedly promoting the exchange — which they claim sold unregistered securities.

The exchange has launched a series of lawsuits to try recover funds with the most recent on Sep. 9 against cross-chain protocol LayerZero Labs in a bid to claw back $21 million that FTX alleged was illegally withdrawn prior to the exchange's bankruptcy in November last year.

In July it sued co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried and other former top executives to try to recover more than $1 billion in funds they allegedly misappropriated.

Celebs who got burned endorsing crypto and those that got away with it

Screen actors and sports stars copped most of the backlash for 2022’s crypto endorsements, while soccer legends appear to have gotten away with it.

Celebrities had a shaky year promoting crypto firms and projects throughout 2022.

Many found themselves named in lawsuits over their alleged promotion of since-failed projects, while others have been relentlessly mocked on social media for their involvement in the first place.

From movie stars to television actors, sports stars to musicians, many celebrities may be regretting their endorsement deals last year, though that’s not to say that there haven’t been exceptions.

Who got burned?

In February last year, American comedian Larry David, who co-created the television series Seinfeld, appeared in a Super Bowl commercial for now-defunct crypto exchange FTX that encouraged users not to “miss out on the next big thing.”

David has since been named in a class-action lawsuit that alleges that he, along with other celebrities, had promoted FTX to unsophisticated investors without performing any due diligence on the exchange.

He’s also being investigated by the Texas State Securities Board regard payments received by FTX for his endorsements, among other celebrities.

Meanwhile, the movie star known for his role in the “Bourne Identity” film series, Matt Damon, has continued to be mocked for his part in the $100 million promotional campaign for Crypto.com.

Damon was even satirized by the animated series South Park in the season 25 premiere in February 2022.

In the sporting world, Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka signed on to be an ambassador for FTX on March 21.

Like Seinfield’s co-creator, Osaka is also named in a lawsuit along with other high-profile celebrities who endorsed FTX including basketball legends Shaquille O’Neal and Stephen Curry, and NFL quarterback Tom Brady.

Professional boxer Floyd Mayweather was also named in a crypto promotion lawsuit in 2022 over his alleged promotion of EthereumMax, though the lawsuit was eventually dismissed by a federal judge in December.

In the world of music, American rapper and hip hop artist Snoop Dogg has been named in a class action lawsuit for allegedly promoting Bored Ape Yacht Club nonfungible tokens (NFTs), along with other musicians including Madonna, Justin Bieber, Post Malone and DJ Khaled.

The lawsuit names over 40 people and companies as defendants, also including Tennis professional Serena Williams, actress Gwyneth Paltrow and comedians Jimmy Fallon and Kevin Hart.

Who got away with it

Interestingly, not all celebrity endorsements of crypto firms have been viewed in a negative light, nor have they attracted the scrutiny of class-action lawyers.

On Jun. 30, 2022, Binance announced it had snapped up the popular TikTok personality, Khaby Lame, as an ambassador.

The deal was seen as positive for the crypto sector, as Lame’s ambassador deal is part of Binance’s mission to increase Web3 awareness and adoption around the world.

Musician DJ Steve Aoki jumped into the NFT world with fantasy sports and sports betting operator DraftKings announcing the hitmaker as the brand ambassador for its NFT market.

American rapper Eminem performed alongside Snoop Dogg during the VMA’s to perform their NFT track "From The D 2 The LCD" featuring Otherside and Bored Ape NFTs.

In the sporting world, David Beckham became the global ambassador for blockchain company DigitalBits, launching his own range of NFTs in the process.

He appears to have avoided any accusations of wrongdoing despite the founders of DigitalBits being accused in an investor lawsuit for “diverting money needed for development” to expensive sports deals and luxury travel, according to a January 2022 report from The New York Times.

Meanwhile, legendary soccer player Lionel Messi has done deals with Singapore-based Bitget, fantasy sports platform Sorare and digital fan token company Socios.com.

Cristiano Ronaldo's foray into crypto sponsorship also appears to have gone down well in the community, working with Binance for the launch of an exclusive NFT collection allowing collectors the chance to receive perks including a personal message from Ronaldo and signed merchandise.

Tennis star Naomi Osaka becomes ambassador for crypto exchange FTX

Naomi Osaka joined figures including seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady, Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bündchen, and NBA star Stephen Curry in promoting the crypto exchange.

Naomi Osaka, once one of the highest-ranked tennis players in the world, has become the latest figure in sports and entertainment to endorse crypto exchange FTX.

In a Monday announcement, FTX said Osaka will be taking an equity stake in the exchange as well as receiving an undisclosed amount of cryptocurrency as compensation for her endorsement. According to the crypto exchange, the tennis star will be part of a “long-term partnership” aimed at bringing women into the space.

"We have seen the statistics about how few women are part of crypto by comparison, which kind of mirrors the inequality we see in other financial markets," said Osaka. "Cryptocurrencies started with the goal of being accessible to everyone and breaking down barriers to entry.”

As an FTX ambassador, Osaka joined figures including seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady, Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bündchen, and NBA star Stephen Curry. The exchange said she will “creatively direct and produce content” aimed at a global audience, and feature FTX’s logo during her competition at the Miami Open, beginning on March 21.

The announcement followed FTX founder and CEO Sam Bankman-Fried saying during Australian Blockchain Week the exchange will be opening an Australia arm. Local Senator Andrew Bragg said at the same event he will be introducing legislation aimed at addressing issues in crypto custody, taxation and DAO operations.

Osaka, previously ranked as the top singles player by the Women's Tennis Association, is not entirely new to the space. Together with her sister Mari, she launched a nonfungible token collection in August 2021 which sold for roughly $600,000. The tennis star has also expressed interest in cryptocurrencies including Dogecoin (DOGE), hinting that token projects are “going to pop up.”

Many celebrities, including major sports figures and stars from movies and television, have become the faces of crypto firms as the space grows. Actor Matt Damon famously plugged Crypto.com in an October 2021 ad spot that has been mocked by comedy shows including South Park and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Nifty News: AMC investors get tokens, Naomi Osaka NFTs, Guy Oseary to represent World of Women

AMC dropped an NFT to its shareholders, Puppy Bowl will feature an NFT sale on Chronicle, and Naomi Osaka launched her third collection.

AMC shareholders gifted free NFT

The AMC movie theater chain dropped NFTs to all AMC shareholders on Tuesday.

As part of the reward, AMC CEO Adam Aron tweeted that the NFT and a WAX wallet in which to hold it will be free to claim for up to a year.

The NFTs, dubbed ‘I Own AMC,’ show a sizable cordoned off medal with the company’s namesake across the middle as a grandiose kind of thank-you.

AMC has embraced cryptocurrency more and more since its stock (AMC) became the target of a retail stock buying craze led by r/Wallstreetbets that started with GameStop.

In Sept. 2021, Aron tweeted that the company would begin accepting Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), and Bitcoin Cash (BCH) as payment at its theater locations by the end of 2022.

Aron has been teasing Doge and Shiba fans about adding their favorite memecoin as a payment option. On Jan. 7, he tweeted that his company was “well on track for the promised Q1 implementation” of accepting Dogecoin (DOGE) and Shiba Inu (SHIB) as payment.

Puppy Bowl 2022 NFT sale raises funds for Ariana Grande’s animal charity

The NFTs depict the puppies competing in the Puppy Bowl as trading cards and show their breed, hometown, and personality type.

The sale began with a free drop for early visitors to the Chronicle NFT marketplace. The official sale began on Jan. 14 with the ‘Common’ items, and will end on Feb. 13 with the ‘Immortal’ items at a higher price and rarity.

Organizers of the Puppy Bowl from Animal Planet signaled environmental awareness by stating that the NFTs were generated by “solutions that are Proof of Stake-driven, and with a commitment to reduce their carbon footprint."

Guy Oseary to represent World of Women

Tech investor Guy Oseary has added another NFT project to his portfolio by agreeing to represent World of Women, a popular female empowerment NFT collection.

Oseary plans to help World of Women capitalize on film, TV, music and gaming opportunities. He also represents the popular Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT collection.

World of Women is a collection of 10,000 pictures depicting “diverse and powerful women” on OpenSea. The collection has a trading volume of 43,500 ETH on the world’s largest NFT marketplace with a floor price of 7.85 ETH ($24,552).

Original $4M Doge NFT meme auctioned off in 17 billion pieces

PleasrDAO will offer exposure to the Doge NFT via 16,969,696,969 fractionalized ERC-20 tokens named “$DOG”.

The $4 million NFT depicting the original Doge meme is set to be fractionalized into ERC-20 Tokens, and auctioned off in pieces.

The owner of the Shibu Inu depicted in the beloved meme, Atsuko Sato sold the Doge NFT for 1696.9 Ether, or $4 million on June 12 to art-focused decentralized autonomous organisation, PleasrDAO.

Starting from Sept.1 at 5pm UTC PleasrDAO will offer exposure to the Doge NFT via a fractionalization that will see the nonfungible token broken down into 16,969,696,969 ERC-20 tokens named “$DOG”.

According to a blog post from PleasrDAO, 20% of the total $DOG supply will be available for purchase initially, with the sale being hosted on open-source smart contract platform, Miso.

After the launch, $DOG will be available for trade on fractional.art, or via decentralized exchanges (DEXs) such as Uniswap and SushiSwap. The idea behind the $DOG tokens is based on its price  increasing as the original Doge NFT goes up in value.

Holders of $DOG will even be able to vote on what they think the valuation of the original NFT should be, which is set to be re-auctioned at a date determined by the PleasrDAO community in the future.

“We will ensure The Doge NFT does not go up for auction until we feel $DOG has reached full meme escape velocity and is coupled with a strong, thriving community,” the blog post read.

However, the regulatory framework surrounding fractionalized NFTs appears to be in a gray area. SEC commissioner Hester Peirce —also known as “Crypto Mom” — warned NFT issuers back in March to be careful with selling “fractional interests,” as they could be deemed as investment products:

“You better be careful that you’re not creating something that’s an investment product — that is a security.”

Doge is attracting top talent

In other doge related news, Japanese-American tennis star Naomi Osaka told Bloomberg on Aug. 31 that she was considering investing in crypto after her interest was piqued by DOGE.

Osaka’s agent suggested investing in crypto, but she said she had already started learning about crypto after seeing the abundance of hype surrounding DOGE that was flooding her social media feeds.

The 23-year-old has won consecutive Grand Slam titles for the past four years, and has already entered the NFT space via a partnership with Tom Brady’s Autograph platform, to drop a series of tokenized collectibles late last month.
