Nifty News: Trump NFTs pump after indictment, Q1 trading volume hits $4.7B and more…

The total NFT market trading volume in Q1 hit $4.7 billion, more than doubling the previous quarter, while Square Enix dropped Final Fantasy trading cards that can't actually be traded, yet.

Oddly, following news of a New York Grand Jury voting to indict former president Donald Trump on March 30, the floor price for the officially licensed Trump Digital Trading Cards NFT project pumped.

According to data from OpenSea, NFT traders were seemingly spurred into action by the announcement, with the floor price moving from 0.46 Ether (ETH) or $835 at current prices, to as high as 0.6 ETH ($1090) on the same day.

It is worth noting that when the project launched in December, it offered exclusive one-on-one experiences to certain NFT hodlers, such as private golf sessions, dinners and conversations with Trump.

Given the indictment news, it could potentially have an impact on the forty-fifth's potential to deliver on such experiences.

At the time of writing, the floor price has since dropped back to around the 0.51 range. The price still sits well above the initial mint price of $99 from December.

NFT sales hit $4.7B in Q1

According to a March 30 report from blockchain analytics platform DappRadar, there was a total of $4.7 billion worth of NFT trading volume in Q1, more than double that of the previous quarter.

The firm pointed to bullish action coming from the Blur marketplace in particular, which took the market by storm in February during its token airdrop farming period.

The $4.7 billion came from a total of 19.4 million NFT sales in Q1, marking an increase of 8.56%, while total volume increased by 147% compared to the $1.9 billion posted in Q4 2022.

The Ethereum network accounted for a whopping $4.1 billion worth of the volume, with second-placed Solana contributing $242 million, while Polygon notably ranked third with $85 million for the quarter.

Square Enix drops Final Fantasy NFT trading cards

Square Enix, the Japanese gaming giant behind the widely popular Final Fantasy franchise, has released NFT trading cards in celebration of the twenty-fifth anniversary of Final Fantasy VII.

The NFTs come as part of the Final Fantasy VII Anniversary Art Museum Digital Card Plus collection, which features five physical cards and a sixth digital NFT card.

However, despite being called trading cards, Square Enix stated on its website that the NFTs can’t actually be traded or transferred at this stage, unless the company decides to build a marketplace in the future.

“If we decide to support the marketplace in the future, we will notify you,” the website reads.

The packs were dropped on March 31 and cost around $3.30 a pop, with the card artwork depicting various characters and scenery from the iconic Final Fantasy VII game.

While it is unclear if the firm intends to build a marketplace to support its digital collectibles, Square Enix has been gradually ramping up its NFT and blockchain gaming-related initiatives over the past couple of years, suggesting something could be in the works.

NFT flight tickets

Low-cost Argentinean airline Flybondi has launched domestic NFT flight tickets under an initiative called “Ticket 3.0.”

According to a rough translation of a March 29 announcement from the firm, users of the new service will be able to directly change names on the tickets, transfer them to other people, or give them away, essentially streamlining the firm’s current ticketing models.

“With Ticket 3.0, our passengers will have greater flexibility and control over their trips because they will be able to transfer, rename or give away their tickets in a simple and autonomous way,” noted Flybondi CEO Mauricio Sana, adding that:

“With this launch, we seek to generate a positive impact in the aviation industry through innovation and an application of blockchain technology.”

The move comes as part of an expanded partnership with NFT ticketing company TravelX, which launched late last year and utilizes the Algorand blockchain for its tokenization.

On March 27, United States-based ticketing company Ticketmaster announced a new feature — token-gated ticket sales — allowing artists to reward NFT holders with exclusive benefits, including “special presales, prime seats, custom travel packages and access to unique concert experiences.”

Binance jumps into NFT ticketing after UEFA League fiasco

Binance collaborated with Società Sportiva Lazio to launch NFT tickets for all of the sports club’s home matches at Stadio Olimpico.

Following the chaos caused by counterfeit tickets in the UEFA Champions League 2022, crypto exchange Binance has launched the pilot of its nonfungible token (NFT) ticketing solution with football club Società Sportiva Lazio for the 2022 to 2023 season.

In the announcement sent to Cointelegraph, Binance highlighted that NFT tickets will solve the issue of fake tickets and eliminate scalping, preventing disorder in sporting events. Apart from access to events, the NFT tickets will also serve other purposes such as store and match discounts, token giveaways and other experiences with S. S. Lazio.

With the collaboration, NFT tickets will be available for all of S. S. Lazio’s home matches. Marco Canigiani, an executive at S. S. Lazio, said that current ticket holders will be able to claim their NFT tickets for free and use them to enter Stadio Olimpico and avail themselves of the benefits that come with the digital tickets.

Binance executive Zoe Wei said that the launch of NFT ticketing showcases a different way to use NFTs and highlights a significant use case for Web3 technology. Wei also said that blockchain-based tickets have the potential to eventually expand from sports to the broader entertainment industry.

In a recent interview with Cointelegraph, Josh Katz, the CEO of NFT marketplace YellowHeart, argued that ticketing is the most compelling use case for NFTs. The executive highlighted that, by having proof of authenticity for each ticket, event organizers will have a defense mechanism against counterfeit tickets.

Sports sponsorships sealed amid market turmoil as Man City inks deal with OKX

Manchester City fans will also have a chance to win season tickets in the OKX Hospitality Box via scanning QR codes on street art commissioned by the crypto exchange.

Crypto exchange OKX has announced that it has made a deal with English Premier League (EPL) champions Manchester City to become the team’s training kit sponsor for the 2022-23 season.

Despite the current bear market, it appears that crypto and sports partnerships have been going strong, with fellow EPL team Everton also recently signing a match kit sponsorship with crypto gambling firm Stake. At the same time, PSG has also launched preseason NFT tickets.

The OKX deal will put a fair amount of eyeballs on company branding, given that Manchester City won the EPL last season and is looking primed to make another tilt at the league this upcoming season after signing the Norwegian star striker Erling Haaland.

As part of the deal, OKX’s logo will feature on both the men’s and the women’s training gear until mid-2023, with current previews showing OKX’s name on the front of training shirts in the lower chest area.

Additionally, OKX stated that it had commissioned popular street artist “Akse P19” and the Global Street Art Agency to create four artworks across Manchester that include QR codes. These can be scanned by fans for a chance to win season tickets in the OKX Hospitality Box. The street art pieces depict players such as Haaland, Jack Grealish, João Cancelo, and John Stones.

The duo has held a partnership since March after OKX was signed on to become Manchester City’s Official Cryptocurrency Exchange Partner. They have also touted that more Web3-focused fan engagement experiences will be rolled out.

OKX was founded in 2017 and is based in the Republic of Seychelles. The firm claims to have more than 20 million customers across the globe from around 180 international markets. It supports trading on top assets such as Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), Polkadot (DOT), and Cardano (ADA).

The most recent crypto deal that precedes Manchester City’s is Everton’s deal with Stake, which was announced on June 9. The multi-year agreement is said to be worth roughly $12 million a season, marking the club’s “highest front-of-shirt deal in the club’s 144-year history,” according to a statement from Everton. Stake also held a sponsorship deal with Watford F.C. last season, who will be plying their trade in the second tier of pro-English football after being relegated.

PSG jumps on NFTs

This week, French Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain F.C. (PSG) also announced a crypto-related move, with the team rolling out NFT tickets for its pre-season tour of Japan later this month.

To commemorate PSG’s first trip to Japan since 1995, the team is offering three premier NFT tickets that offer buyers VIP access to games, meet and greets, player autographs, and private parties with a select group of players who were not specified.

The NFTs are on sale until Wednesday, and to obtain all of those supposed benefits, the buyer will have to pay a hefty 180.36 ETH, worth around $207,000 at current prices.
