Moonbirds will store NFT art ‘in chain’ — Raises $50M in Series A funding

Storing an NFT “in chain” means that the NFT can be generated completely off the underlying smart contract, without any need for an off-chain storage provider.

PROOF, the private community behind the Moonbirds NFT collection, has announced it is shifting its blue-chip collection completely “in chain” — allowing images to be fully contained within the underlying smart contract.

In a community live stream named “Future PROOF” on Aug. 30, Harri Thomas, director of products at PROOF explained that the new approach will mean that in the future, the viewable image of a Moonbird NFT will be “constructed from the contract itself from art layers, which are going to be stored on the blockchain.”

“We’ve talked about putting the birds ‘on chain’, so what I’m here to tell you today is that they’re not only going to be ON chain, they’re going to be put IN chain.”

Thomas explained that their Ethereum-based NFTs will be different from most other NFTs which are simply tokens that point to where the images are stored off chain.

“This is an unusual approach. Certainly not unique,” explained Harris, adding that another example of an NFT project using the same approach is OnChainMonkey, a 10K PFP NFT collection launched in 2021.

Thomas declined to provide a date for when the NFT collection will make this shift, but noted that it is a “primary focus” for the smart contract team, so “hopefully not too long.”

Co-founder and chief product officer Justin Mezzell, who was one of the hosts of the live stream added:

“It's cool to enter that rarefied space of a fully in-chain project and making sure that this project is really fully decentralized and viewable for just generations.”

The live stream also revealed the first official expansion of PROOF’s Moonbirds collection, known as Moonbird Mythics — is expected to launch in early 2023.

The collection will span 20,000 NFTs, and is the organization’s third NFT profile picture (PFP) project.

$50M in funding

PROOF has just raised $50 million in a Series A funding round led by venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), along with participation from Seven Seven Six, True Ventures, Collab+Currency, Flamingo DAO, SV Angel, and VaynerFund.

“It’s great to have this vote of confidence from some of the most respected investors in Web3, as well as capital to keep delivering great products and services as we mature this business over the long term,” said PROOF founder Kevin Rose.

In April, the Ethereum-based Moonbirds NFT project completely sold out its collection of 10,000 computer-generated pixel owl avatars within 48 hours of launch, netting $281 million in sales at the time.

Its success despite the bear market earned it a title as a “blue-chip” NFT.

According to Open Sea, Moonbirds is ranked at number seven in terms of total volume traded at approximately 169,000 Ether (ETH) and is currently ranked number one in the 24-hour charts at a floor price of 13.8 ETH ($21,445 at current prices).

Other announcements made during the Future PROOF live stream included an upcoming launch of a PROOF social platform, the creation of a new decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) that will oversee licensing of the Moonbirds name, and a new PROOF token that will have “real utility” — with more details expected in 2023.

Looks bare: OpenSea turns into NFT ghost-town after volume plunges 99% in 90 days

An ongoing debt crisis at lending platform BendDAO is also increasing the risks of the NFT bubble going bust.

OpenSea, the world's largest nonfungible token (NFT) marketplace, has witnessed a substantial drop in daily volumes as fears about a potential market bubble grow.

OpenSea volume plummets to yearly lows

Notably, the marketplace processed nearly $5 million worth of NFT transactions on Aug. 28 — approximately 99% lower than its record high of $405.75 million on May 1, according to DappRadar.

OpenSea users, volume, and transactions statistics. Source: DappRadar

The massive declines in daily volumes coincided with equally drastic drops in OpenSea users and their transactions, suggesting that the value and interest in the blockchain-based collectibles have diminished in the recent months.

That is further visible in the falling floor prices — the minimum amount one is ready to pay for an NFT — of leading digital collectible projects.

For instance, the floor price of the Bored Ape Yacht Club has dropped by 53% to 72.5 ETH on Aug. 28 versus a high of 153.7 ETH on May 1.

Similarly, the floor price of CryptoPunks, another top NFT collection, dropped almost 20% from its July high of 83.72 ETH.

NFT bubble is bursting

NFT prices are quoted in the native currency of the blockchain on which they are launched. So a digital collectible created on Ethereum will be purchased using Ether (ETH), which also means that NFT's prices will fall if ETH's market valuation plummets.

A bearish ETH market appears to be one of the primary drivers behind the poor NFT statistics. Notably, the price of one Ether has fallen from $4,950 in November 2021 to below $1,500 in August 2022.

BendDAO votes to improve NFT liquidity

Last week, BendDAO, a decentralized autonomous organization that enables NFT owners to collateralize their digital collectibles to take loans (in ETH) worth 30%-40% of the NFT's floor price, voted to change its protocol's code to make its NFT collateral more liquid.

The vote occurred after a rise in Ether price increased the value of ETH-denominated loans in dollar terms. Meanwhile, on the other hand, NFT prices plummeted, reducing the value of the collateral held by BendDAO.

As a result, BendDAO is now facing its own debt crisis moment, where borrowers cannot pay their dollar-denominated loans due to falling ETH prices, and lenders are finding it difficult to recover their loaned amount due to falling collateral valuations.

Related: Prosecutors want to claim NFTs as securities, alleges legal team of former OpenSea employee

BendDAO's latest vote has changed its NFT liquidation threshold from 95% to 70%. It has also reduced the time offered to borrowers to avoid liquidation from 48 hours to 4 hours to attract more bids for their NFT collaterals.

In other words, the floor price of NFTs, including BAYC, risks plunging further if the market's liquidity continues to dry u.

18 ‘uncomfortable’ truths about nonfungible tokens

NFT analyst OKhotshot warns there are no reliable stable investments in the NFT space and most investors will lose money investing in the market.

Nonfungible token (NFT) analyst and blockchain detective "OKHotshot" has highlighted his picks for 18 of the most “uncomfortable truths” about the NFT industry.

In a lengthy 20-part thread to his 45,000 followers on Twitter on Aug. 27, OKHotshot laid bare many of the issues currently plaguing the NFT industry, including irresponsible celebrity endorsements, hacking, and the kinds of projects that are almost always destined to fail.

The analyst made his name in the industry as a full-time on-chain analyst specializing in NFT audits and Discord security operating under as @NFTheder on Twitter.

Most NFT investors will lose money

One of the most sobering “uncomfortable truths” shared by the NFT analyst is that most people will lose money investing in NFTs.

OKHotshot said there are “no reliable stable investments in NFTs” warning that if an investor hears the term “blue chip NFT” to “run away.” He also warned that “diamond handing” isn’t the best way to make money, instead, investors should be taking profits when they can.

“We are NOT all going to make it. Most NFT traders trade at a loss.”

Previously, Cointelegraph reported on a poll that found that while 64.3% of respondents said they bought NFTs to make money, 58.3% claimed they have lost money in their NFT journey.

The analyst advised anyone interested in NFTs must stay on top of announcements because as "by the time you hear about a new project on Twitter spaces, you are late."

He also warned that volume and liquidity are often more important metrics than floor price, and time is more valuable than any asset, so planning ahead is essential.

“If there are no buyers you can't take profits,” he explained.

Majority of NFT projects fail

The NFT analyst also cautions anyone interested in getting in early in a particular NFT project as tokens often fail to stay above the mint price, adding also that "derivatives rarely outperform the original NFT collections."

NFT project Pixelmon stirred up controversy in March this year after revealing the finalized art for its much-anticipated project — the quality of which turned out to be far below expectations.

The project raised roughly $70 million, with each NFT minted for three Ether (ETH) each. However, the floor price on the OpenSea NFT marketplace has plummeted to only 0.26 ETH, worth roughly $370 at the time of writing.

Phantabear, another NFT project, originally minted for 6.36 ETH and drove record trading volumes on OpenSea when it was first released in January but has also seen a major drop in value since then, with the floor price at only 0.32 ETH ($463) at the time of writing.

A March study by blockchain analytics firm Nansen found that most NFT collections either make no money or end up netting less than they cost to create.

Celebrities and influencers clueless

Several of the shared “uncomfortable truths” are scathing of celebrities and influencers.

OKHotshot said that despite what famous influencers may claim or imply through social media posts, noting that “celebrity NFT projects are notoriously bad investments.”

He also added that “Web2 marketing is exceedingly ineffective in the NFT market."

Recently, Cointelegraph reported on warning letters posted by a consumer watchdog group to nearly 20 celebrities for their role in shilling NFTs.

Related: Justin Bieber, Paris Hilton among 19 celebs called out for shilling NFTs

OKHotshot's final points revolve around the idea that most NFTs don't have any intrinsic value. The analyst warned that NFT projects without sale terms aren't worth anything and that NFT benefits don't travel to downstream purchasers unless specified in the terms.

"NFT projects without sale terms are selling you a token ID with a hyperlink to an off-chain asset. Without terms, nothing is defined. You can't own a hyperlink so in all likelihood you bought nothing."

That being said, he believes that the price of NFTs continues to be controlled by hype and market speculation, noting that savvy investors could "use this to your advantage."

Nearly $55M worth of Bored Ape, CryptoPunks NFTs risk liquidation amid debt crisis

Analysts are divided on whether the potential NFT liquidation event is a buy-the-dip opportunity.

Many owners of precious Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) and CryptoPunks NFTs, who used them as collateral to take out loans in Ether (ETH), have failed to repay their debts. The situation could lead up to the NFT sector's first massive liquidation event.

BAYC "death spiral" incoming?

DoubleQ, the founder of web3 launchpad Double Studio, says lending service BendDAO could liquidate up to $55 million worth of NFTs to recover its loans, fearing the so-called "health factor" of these debts could fall below 1.

Notably, an NFT collection's floor price is important in determining the health factor. BendDAO offers 30%-40% of the NFT's floor price as loans. But the protocol sells the NFT if its floor price falls too close to the amount borrowed—a liquidation threshold, as explained below.

BendDAO's NFT liquidation protocol. Source: Official Website

Meanwhile, the floor price of BAYC has fallen from 153.7 ETH in May to 69.69 ETH in August—a nearly 55% plunge in three months. Simultaneously, the health factor of at least 20 loans with BAYC as collateral has fallen to 1.1 as of Aug. 19, data on BendDAO shows.

Borrowers have 48 hours to repay the loan or their NFT collateral will be liquidated. According to doubleQ, these liquidations could lead to "a death spiral for the BAYC ecosystem and NFT market as a whole," given BendDAO's exposure to other NFT projects, including CryptoPunks and Doodles.

"OpenSea volume is at the lowest point ever in the last 12 months," the analyst warned, adding:

"There's simply not enough volume to save these liquidations.. It's inevitable."
BendDAO NFT holdings distribution. Source: doubleQ

OpenSea is the leading NFT marketplace by volume.

To buy the dip or not?

Nevertheless, doubleQ believes the incoming BAYC liquidation could offer an opportunity to buy the NFTs at cheaper rates.

On the other hand, Naimish Sanghvi, CEO of India-based crypto news outlet Coin Crunch, wonders if there would be any buyers due to a lack of arbitrage opportunities.

"Your bid has to be more than 95% of the floor value and higher than the debt amount," explained Sanghvi, noting that there could no room for making money from arbitrage between these values.

"The auctions don’t begin until the first bid is placed, so there may be several NFTs in limbo at a given point in time if the prices are unfavorable. And that should scare the Liquidity providers."

This scenario would have BendDAO wait for borrowers to repay their loans—or to wait for the re-emergence of liquidators after a market recovery—to subside its "temporary floating loss."

ApeCoin price eyes 45% rally following Otherside metaverse demo

APE has been pursuing a rare ascending triangle reversal breakout, with its profit target at $8.40.

ApeCoin (APE) rallied to start the week as traders considered Yuga Labs' decision to open its Otherside metaverse for selected users. In doing so, the token broke out of a technical pattern that hints at another 45% price rally by September 2022.

Otherside metaverse euphoria

APE's price surged by almost 23.5% week-to-date to reach $6.12 a token on July 19.

The weekly gains came as a part of a rally that started on July 16. Interestingly, Yuga Labs invited 4,300 players of its Otherside gaming metaverse for a demo—and the tour of its Bored Ape avatar online platform—on the day of APE's rally.

APE/USD daily price chart. Source: TradingView

That suggests traders purchased APE after taking cues from the Otherside update, given it serves as a governance token at ApeCoin DAO. This "decentralized autonomous organization," or DAO, powers the ecosystem of apps and services deployed by Yuga Labs and third-party brands, including Otherside.

APE price eyes 45% rally

The Otherside euphoria has also prompted APE to exit a technical setup called the "ascending triangle."

Ascending triangles are typically considered continuation patterns. Nonetheless, in rare instances, ascending triangles form at the end of a downtrend, leading to a strong price reversal

Related: Time to accumulate? 5 sectors to watch during crypto winter

It appears APE's ascending triangle had formed at the end of its downtrend. That is because the token rallied by over 100% after bottoming out locally near $3 on June 15, followed by a break above the triangle's upper trendline near $5.22 on July 18.

APE/USD daily price chart featuring 'ascending triangle' reversal setup. Source: TradingView

As a rule of technical analysis, a breakout originating from an ascending triangle pushes the price north by as much as the maximum height between the triangle's upper and lower trendline. That puts APE on the road to $8.40, up about 45% from current price levels.

Conversely, a close below the triangle's upper trendline could trigger the prevailing bearish breakdown setup, with the profit target sitting below $3.50.

Polygon reaches level that last time triggered a 275% MATIC price rally — will history repeat?

MATIC has rebounded sharply after testing the July 2021 support level, borrowing further upside cues from Polygon's partnership with Meta.

Polygon (MATIC) price reversed course to the upside on May 10 after testing $0.794 as its interim support, thus rising by up to 25% to $0.99.

The rebound occurred a day after the token slumped over 17% to reach $0.787, its lowest level since July 2021, amid a global market crash led by the U.S. Federal Reserve's hawkish policies.

MATIC price rebounded after undergoing five days of relentless declines, attracting buyers around the same support level that had preceded a 275% bull run last year.

MATIC/USD weekly price chart. Source: TradingView

A previous retest of the $0.787-level in July 2021 and the 0.786 Fib line (near $0.61) of the Fibonacci retracement graph — drawn from the $0.002-swing low to 2.86-swing high — followed up with MATIC rising to its record high of $3 by December 2021.

Therefore, MATIC/USD might undergo a similar, sharp upside retracement in the coming weeks after rebounding from the same support confluence.

MATIC fundamentals: then and now

However, a lot has changed in terms of market fundamentals between July 2021 and May 2022 that may influence MATIC traders' behavior.

For instance, MATIC's price boom occurred last year as demand for layer-2 solutions increased due to Ethereum's skyrocketing gas and transaction costs.

As a result, popular decentralized finance (DeFI) applications, including decentralized exchange SushiSwap (SUSHI), liquidity service Curve (CRV), and lending platform Aave (AAVE), expanded their operations in the Polygon chain.

But 2022 has been a bad year for cryptos. The Fed's decision to hike interest rates followed by the unwinding of their $9 trillion balance sheet has prompted investors to reduce their exposures to riskier assets. Unfortunately, the prospect of excess cash leaving the market has hurt MATIC, whose year-to-date paper returns were nearly 65% below zero as of May 10.

"This is a risk-off across all asset classes, including crypto,” Daniel Ives, strategist at Wedbush Securities, told the Financial Times, adding that digital asset investors have “nowhere to hide.” He added:

"Some investors are playing crypto like a hedge against inflation, but it’s trading like the Nasdaq’s Siamese twin."

Silver lining amid chaos: Meta

On May 9, Polygon CEO Ryan Watt announced that they are partnering with Meta to create a nonfungible token (NFT) platform for Facebook and Instagram.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg also confirmed that they have been "testing digital collectibles for creators and collectors to showcase NFTs on Instagram," adding that similar features would come to Facebook soon. The hype could help MATIC form a strong price floor.

But from a technical perspective, MATIC risks bearish continuation toward $0.615 in May.

Meanwhile, a bullish confirmation looks less likely to appear unless the token reclaims its 50-week exponential moving average (50-week EMA; the red wave) near $1.37 as support.

SHIB price eyes 30% drop with Shiba Inu’s massive triangle breakdown underway

Shiba Inu developer promises a bright future with an upcoming NFT gaming project, but SHIB price continues to fall.

Shiba Inu (SHIB) price dropped by over 10% to $0.00001641 on May 9 amid a broader crypto market decline. This year, SHIB's returns were 50% below zero, one of the worst performances by a top-ranking cryptocurrency in 2022.

Last week, luxury fashion brand Gucci named Shiba Inu in the list of tokens it would accept for payments in five of its U.S.-based stores. Nonetheless, the bulls have ignored the major adoption news as SHIB price continues to fall under macro and technical pressures.

SHIB/USD daily price chart. Source: TradingView

Shiba Inu triangle breakdown

The prospect of Shiba Inu facing more yearly losses increases as it stays on the path toward its "symmetrical triangle" breakdown target near $0.00001197.

The level, which sits around 30% below May 6's price, results from a technical rule that measures symmetrical triangles' profit targets by adding the maximum distance between the structure's upper and lower trendline to the breakout/breakdown point.

SHIB/USD weekly price chart featuring 'symmetrical triangle' breakout. Source: TradingView

Nevertheless, SHIB's shorter-timeframe charts reflects an interim bullish bias.

Short-term 20% bounce in play

SHIB has dropped near the red horizontal line near $0.00001667, which has served as an accumulation zone for traders three times since October 2021. For instance, Shiba Inu had rallied by over 100% two weeks after testing the $0.0000167-level as support in January 2022.

The level also coincides with the lower trendline of the descending parallel channel, as shown in the chart below. As a result of this confluence, SHIB eyes a price rebound, with the channel's upper trendline near $0.00002000 acting as the interim upside target for the May–June period.

SHIB/USD daily price chart featuring descending parallel channel setup. Source: TradingView

Meanwhile, SHIB's daily relative strength index (RSI) has dipped below 30, an oversold territory that could further catalyze a short-term rebound.

Nonetheless, macroeconomic catalysts — primarily a hawkish Federal Reserve — continue to pose downside risks for the crypto market, including SHIB. So price rallies are likely to sell off at higher levels, thus keeping SHIB on track toward its triangle breakdown target near $0.00001197.

Bright future promised

Shiba Inu's developer Shytoshi Kusama offered a bright outlook for the project in what appeared to be an effort to pent-up the market demand for SHIB tokens.

The developer noted that Playside, an Australia-based video gaming firm, would feature Shiba Inu-themed nonfungible tokens (NFTs) — called Shiboshi — on their upcoming metaverse game of the same name. He also noted that Shiba Inu would release the documentation of their layer-2 blockchain, Shibarium, by "this month or next.''

The disclosures came after an Ethereum whale bought 74 billion SHIB (worth $1.23 million at press time).

ApeCoin slides 40% in three days despite Otherside metaverse land sale — here’s why

APE price could see more downside in the coming days as the Otherside hype cools down.

ApeCoin (APE) caught its bulls off-guard with APE price losing nearly 40% in just three days.

No dutch auction

APE's price reached its second-highest level, hitting $27.57 on April 28, up more than 2,650% from its mid-March debut.

Nonetheless, traders started unwinding their positions after Yuga Labs, the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT collection's creator, released the details of the mint of its Otherside Metaverse lands, dubbed "Otherdeed."

Yuga Labs revealed that the NFT mint would cost a flat 305 APE (~$5,250 at today's price), in contrast to expectations that the company would sell the metaverse land parcels in a dutch auction manner. Thus, the disclosure may have reduced the need for people to hoard more ApeCoin tokens, leading to a drop in demand.

APE dropped to as low as $17 three days after the Yuga Labs' announcement.

APE/USD four-hour price chart. Source: TradingView

Additionally, the selloff accelerated due to Yuga Labs' decision to limit the minting of Otherdeed NFTs, starting with two NFTs per wallet for the first wave. This may have also played a role in driving down demand for APE tokens.

APE a "good buy" after dip?

ApeCoin serves as a primary settlement token for all the Yuga Labs' products and services. Additionally, it is a governance asset within "ApeCoin DAO," a decentralized autonomous organization that gives APE holders the right to vote on the proposals made by community members.

But the biggest takeaway remains APE's close association with Yuga Labs itself, a blue-chip startup whose valuation reached $4 billion almost a year after its debut. So, the hype surrounding its metaverse land sales, all payable via ApeCoin, could absorb the ongoing selling.

OpenSea, the world's leading NFT marketplace, also announced on April 30 that it has started accepting APE for payments on its platform. Meanwhile, Yuga Labs has requested the ApeCoin DAO to hold a vote on whether APE could migrate from Ethereum to its own blockchain.

Loma, an independent market analyst, signaled APE's potential of bottoming out despite its latest price dip, citing "interest and speculation" surrounding the Otherside mint.

"The bear market dip-buying of choice seems to un-ironically be $APE and related ecosystem," the analyst noted, adding:

"I think it’ll be a good buy once the mint-hype dies down."

ApeCoin technicals agree

APE's latest selloff has led its price to a support confluence defined by its 100-4H exponential moving average (100-4H EMA; the black wave) and the 0.5 Fib line (around 17.29) of the Fibonacci retracement graph drawn from $10.63-swing low to nearly $24-swing high.

ApeCoin four-hour price chart. Source: TradingView

APE/USD has been attempting to rebound from the said confluence, but lackluster volumes indicate that it would continue falling deeper, with the 0.618 Fib line near $15.72 serving as the next downside target, down over 10% from today's price.

The level coincides with the 200-4H EMA (the blue wave) and the top of a so-called "demand zone" — the launchpad for APE's previous 100% price rally.

Related: 2 key metrics point toward further downside for the entire crypto market

Conversely, a rebound from 100-4H EMA could have APE test the 0.382 Fib line near $18.85. Accompanied by convincingly increasing volumes, the price could test $20 and 24 as the next bullish targets.

ApeCoin price breakout stalls after $2.4M BAYC NFT robbery — What’s ahead?

APE price now risks crashing by almost 20% from April 26's price, based on its rising wedge pattern.

ApeCoin (APE) underwent a modest selloff a day after the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), a popular nonfungible token (NFT) brand, reported losing $2.4 million worth of digital collectibles in a robbery.

APE price rally to $25 stalls

The hacker compromised BAYC's official Instagram account, using it to post a phishing link that withdrew tokens out of users' cryptocurrency wallets.

On April 25, the BAYC Twitter handle confirmed the hack, albeit too late as users had already transferred tokens to the hacker's account, thus losing ownership of their extremely expensive Bored Ape, Mutant Ape and Bored Ape Kennel Project NFTs.

OpenSea, the biggest NFT marketplace by volume and earnings, tagged the stolen NFTs as suspicious. But even then, the hacker ended up selling four BAYC collectibles for about $1.6 million.

APE, which serves as a governance token to BAYC's decentralized autonomous organization ApeCoin DAO, dropped by nearly 11% to $17.41 this April 26.

As it fell, the token also deviated from the upside target of its prevailing "symmetrical triangle" pattern around $25, as shown in the chart below.

APE/USD daily price chart featuring 'symmetrical triangle' setup. Source: TradingView

The correction confirmed strong bearish sentiments around $20, a level that coincides with the 0.382 Fib line of the Fibonacci retracement graph, drawn from the $41-swing high to the $8.50-swing low. This raised the possibility of APE extending its correction toward the 0.236 Fib line near $16 in the medium term.

Rising wedge risks further APE selloff

More downside cues in the ApeCoin appeared in the form of a "rising wedge" pattern.

In detail, rising wedges form when the price trends higher inside a range defined by two contracting, ascending trendlines. These patterns typically resolve after the price breaks below the lower trendline alongside a rise in trading volumes.

Related: What are the top 3 trending altcoins to buy in 2022 | Find out now on The Market Report

ApeCoin has been forming a similar ascending structure since April 2022, as shown in the chart below.

A rising wedge's breakdown target is measured after adding the maximum distance between the upper and lower trendlines to the breakout point. Therefore, APE's downside target for Q2 is between $14.37 and $17.50.

STEPN to new highs? GMT price painting first ‘bull flag’ toward $5 target

GMT is booming amid warnings that its 38,000% price rally since inception could end up being an "absolute joke."

STEPN (GMT) has rallied strongly against the U.S. dollar this week as it looks likely to form a classical bullish technical pattern called the "bull flag."

GMT eyes more upside

GMT's price rose 30% week-to-date, including a strong rally to establish an all-time high near $3.85 followed by a relatively modest correction to nearly $3. In particular, the correction phase occurred inside a descending parallel channel, raising possibilities that the price would eventually break out of it to the upside.

That is precisely because traditional analysts consider strong run-ups, followed by range-trapped price corrections, as bullish continuation setups. And the one GMT has been painting — a bull flag, as mentioned above — could lead to an upside boom in the weeks ahead, as shown in the chart below.

GMT/USD 4-hour price chart featuring 'bull flag' setup. Source: TradingView

As a general rule, traders realize a bull flag target by measuring the previous uptrend's height and projecting it from the breakout point. Applying the classic setup on GMT's chart shows that it now eyes a run-up above $5, about 65% above today's price.

Bull flags' success rate of meeting their upside targets sits near 64%, according to Thomas Bulkowski, a veteran investor and analyst.

But the risk of a drop toward $2 becomes high if the GMT's price breaks below the bull flag's lower trendline, the last line of support, which coincides with the 50-4H exponential moving average (50-4H EMA; the red wave) at $2.91.

STEPN's 38,000% gains 'an absolute joke'?

GMT surged by nearly 38,000% in less than two months, amid the hype surrounding STEPN's "move-to-earn" economic model that rewards its app's users with a native currency, called Green Satoshi Token (GST), for merely moving.

STEPN generates revenues (it made $26.81 million in Q1/2022) via the sales of its so-called "NFT Sneaker" — a unique digital image whose ownership enables players to earn GST in the first place. The game uses the proceeds first to buy and then burn GMT, thus creating upward pressure on its prices if the demand for the token goes up.

Independent market analyst Wangarian believes the hype around STEPN looks similar to what Axie Infinity (AXS), a play-to-earn gaming metaverse, witnessed in May 2021. AXS/USD rallied from around $2.50 to about $178 between May and November last year.

Fellow independent market analyst Michaël van de Poppe, however, fears that GMT's market capitalization, which sits near $1.9 billion — with a fully diluted valuation of around $18 billion — is an "absolute joke."

But GMT "valuations can still become ridiculous," he adds, owing to STEPN's marketing tactics.
