NFT game Guild of Guardians raises $5.3M, token sale oversubscribed 82X

The play-to-earn game’s soft launch is planned for Q1 2022, with 400,000 users already pre-registered.

Upcoming NFT based mobile role-playing game Guild of Guardians has sold out two tranches of its native token (GEMS) totaling $5.3 million.

The token sale, held on Coinlist on Nov. 30 was oversubscribed 82 times, with around 808,000 users registering. More than 10,700 new GEM holders from over 100 countries purchased a maximum of $500 worth of tokens. However users from Australian, the U.S.,Canada and China were prohibited from purchasing tokens amid mounting regulatory concerns.

GOG allocated 6% of the total 1 billion total tokens to the CoinList sale, while 63% of the supply will be distributed via community-driven events, activities, and core gameplay.

The play-to-earn game’s soft launch is planned for Q1 2022, with 400,000 users already pre-registered.

The game comes from Ukrainian developer Stepico games in partnership with Australian-based NFT layer 2 scaling solution Immutable X. Immutable X is the first layer 2 scaling solution for NFTs on Ethereum, and is backed by Galaxy Digital and Coinbase.

Immutable’s Head of Marketing Nicholas Kelland said GOG is launching on mobile so that it’s accessible to most people.

“Not everyone has really robust gaming rigs and PCs and so on and so forth. So mobile was an easy choice for us.”

The success of GOG’s successful initial DEX offering (IDO) comes as play-to-earn gaming becoming increasingly popular. In GOG, every in-game asset that users own is a tradable and exchangeable NFT.

“I think the concept of in-game asset ownership is a foregone conclusion. And it's a matter of when, not if,” Kelland said, adding that “it goes back to the concept of the content creator economy and people, people basically owning this stuff that they deserve to own.”

This comes after the first Founder NFT sale in June, which raised $3 million in 24 hours. The second wave raised $5 million, and the third and final wave raised over $4 million.

RPG adventure game Illuvium boosted by $2M gaming guild fundraise

Polemos plans to expand into the burgeoning P2E gaming landscape with a strategic funding round dedicated to the launch of its Illuvium RPG game.

Polemos, a play-to-earn (P2E) gaming guild specialized in NFT games, has raised $2 million in a strategic funding round to focus on its open-world role-playing game.

Soon-to-be-launched as an open beta in Q1 2022, Illuvium is an open-world RPG adventure game built on the Ethereum blockchain. Players collect creatures called Illuvials that are represented as tradeable NFTs. The digital characters can be used to battle against other players and complete quests, becoming more powerful with each battle won.

On Nov. 19, Polemos announced the funding round that was led by investment firm Delphi Digital and Framework Ventures. Other participants in the round included DeFi founders from Sushi, Aave, 1inch Exchange, and a number of others.

Aiming to create a multi-layered network of players before Illuvium is launched, Polemos has partnered with online gambling operator, Asian Logic. Its users will become the primary guild group and others will be sourced from its Discord community.

Kieran Warwick, co-founder of Illuvium, stated:

“Guilds like Polemos will help players enter the Metaverse by assisting with capital and onboarding requirements. Meeting the needs of play-to-earn gamers is critical for sparking a mass mainstream adoption of crypto gaming."

Polemos is developing a GameFi learning management system, a decentralized exchange for guild assets, and a player analytics platform to educate, track, analyze, and manage players.

The firm is aiming to give players in developing nations a base foundation to get started either by teaching skills to play, or lending them initial resources like tokens and gaming items.

Nifty News: YGG partners with 8 P2E games, Ice Cube and Quiznos drop NFTs

Microsoft's head of gaming Phil Spencer said he is cautious about integrating NFTs with the Xbox Store.

Decentralized gaming guild Yield Guild Games (YGG) has partnered with, and invested in, eight new play-to-earn (P2E) blockchain games.

YGG lends out nonfungible token (NFT) gaming assets to Guild players so that they can earn rewards from a long list of P2E games without having to front the costs of purchasing the NFTs themselves. The guild boasts assets from widely popular games such as Axie Infinity and Splinterlands.

In an announcement shared with Cointelegraph on Nov. 16, YGG revealed that it had backed eight games with “strong play-to-earn models” including Influence, CyBall, Thetan Arena, KOGs SLAM!, MOBOX, Aavegotchi, DeHorizon and Genopets.

Sarutobi Sasuke, YGG’s head of partnerships, emphasized that the guild seeks out games with strong community involvement and “fair gaming economies.”

“The team reviews the gameplay and game economics to ensure that the games have a robust and fair game economy that rewards players adequately for the time and effort put in by them,” he said.

YGG has snapped up a wide range of NFT assets from the games such as tokenized plots of land and avatars. While some of the gaming projects are in their formative or pre-launch stages, others are already on the market such as Aavegotchi and Mobox.

Aavegotchi is an Ethereum-based NFT project inspired by the popular Japanese virtual pet game Tamagotchi. Mobox is a Binance Smart Chain-based gaming platform that builds yield farming structures into its games. According to Coingecko, Aavegotchi (GHST) and Mobox (MBOX) have a market cap of $145 million and $340 million each.

Microsoft gaming exec cautious of NFTs

While many popular brands and companies have jumped wholeheartedly on the NFT bandwagon, Microsoft's head of gaming Phil Spencer said he is cautious about integrating the tech with the Xbox Store.

During a Nov. 17 interview with Axios, Spencer stated that, while NFT gaming is on the “up,” he has witnessed a lot of unsavory behavior in the sector:

“What I'd say today on NFT[s] is, I think there's a lot of speculation and experimentation that's happening, and that some of the creative that I see today feels more exploitive than about entertainment."

He conceded that not every NFT game is exploitative and that the sector is “kind of in that journey of people figuring it out.”

“And I can understand that early on you see a lot of things that probably are not things you want to have in your store,” he said.

Spencer said that if Xbox does opt to list NFT games in the Xbox Store, it will actively weed out anything that it deems as not beneficial to the user, noting that “we don't want that kind of content.

Quiznos starts NFT side-hustle

United States-based fast-food sandwich giant Quiznos has taken the plunge into NFTs via a partnership with Crypto.com.

The firm’s debut NFT collection named “Out of this World” featured five open editions NFTs or “sandwich coins” depicting astronauts in space either holding or hunting for top digital assets such as Dogecoin (DOGE), Ether (ETH) and Bitcoin (BTC).

The sale was hosted on Crypto.com and ended on Nov. 16, with the drop generating around $176,975 from a total of 4,403 NFT purchases.

In a Nov. 15 announcement, Quiznos said that proceeds from the sale would go to World Central Kitchen, a nonprofit that provides free food to communities in times of crisis.

“We are delighted that Quiznos chose our platform to launch this NFT campaign in support of efforts to help those in need at a critical time for our planet," said Crypto.com’s executive vice president and global head of NFT Joe Conyers III.

"We view this as a fun way to connect our community with a beloved food brand and terrific cause,” he added.

Ice Cube said he wanted to do something legit rather than just cash in.

Axie Infinity guild CGU helps players enter the fantasy play-to-earn NFT game with ‘scholarships’

"By playing-to-earn and learn, our scholars are gaining critical new skills that will shortly be in huge demand by employers setting up shop in the metaverse," says CGU co-founder Sergei Sergienko.

Axie Infinity, a monster-battling NFT game, has been gaining a lot of traction with over $600 million Axies bought and sold in the past month. Each Axie is a nonfungible token, or NFT, minted on the Ethereum (ETH) blockchain. Similar in theme to Nintendo's Pokemon series, Axies come in different rarity types, with varying strengths and attributes, with the strongest fetching very high prices on the game's marketplace. Players earn Smooth Love Potions (SLPs) by completing daily quests, defeating monsters and battling other players in arenas with their Axies. SLPs can then be sold in exchange for various cryptocurrencies.

Due to the high initial cost of buying/borrowing/breeding Axies, in-game guilds have formed as of late to fund players' upfront expenses, or offer scholarships, in exchange for their SLP earnings as they play. One such in-game guild is Singapore-based Crypto Gaming United, or CGU, which has close to 100,000 Discord users and regularly looks for new scholars in the official Axie Infinity Discord.

In a statement sent to Cointelegraph, Sergei Sergienko, co-founder of CGU, explained that players are not required to pay anything to start playing. Instead, CGU funds all characters/NFTs costs via a scholarship, which can amount to $4,000 per player. What's more, CGU provides education and mentoring for its partnered players to enhance their cryptocurrency knowledge and gaming skills. In exchange, CGU takes a 50% commission on players' earnings, some of which are issued to investors of the CGU token; afterward, 5% of earnings go to local management in the countries in which CGU operates, with players keeping the remaining 45%. In addition, the company is currently trialing a "pension plan" of 3% to 5% for its players as a social security initiative.

According to Sergienko, top players earn up to 680 SLPs per day on a net basis (after CGU's cut). The game time for top players is around six hours daily. Meanwhile, players on the lower end of the earnings can make approximately $120 for 60 hours of play each month. Even this amount surpasses the minimum wage for full-time work in countries such as the Philippines and Russia on a pro-rated basis, where Axie Infinity is very popular. CGU claims to also attract many Axie players from Cuba, Venezuela, Turkmenistan, Myanmar and African nations.

In addition to focusing on play-to-earn gaming, CGU also operates the crypto-freelancing platform LaborX. A collection of stories and testimonies from players partnering with CGU can be found on its website. With regards to long-term development for the CGU guild and its players, Sergei had the following to say:

"We also realize that play-to-earn may well be a passing phase, and as such, we are looking at the greater opportunities for all our people. We are hiring scholars with a view of what may happen after the hype. Having a freelancing platform and a massive education experience helps us with that."
