Robinhood not giving up on crypto despite Q3 crypto revenue slashing 12%

The Robinhood CEO also announced the brokerage firm’s plans to expand the Robinhood Wallet internationally in the months to come.

Crypto and stock trading platform Robinhood highlighted lagging cryptocurrency revenue in the third quarter of 2022, though the results will do little to dampen its ambition to serve the market, its CEO says.

The trading platform announced its third-quarter results on Nov. 2, with the Robinhood executives pointing to a 12% quarter-on-quarter decrease in Monthly Active Users (MAU) and a 24% quarter-on-quarter drop in notional volume as two of the main drivers behind a 12% fall in crypto revenue, reaching $51 million.

In a results filing, the company attributed the fall in active users and trading volume as “customers continued to navigate the volatile market environment.”

Despite this, the company’s executives said it would continue investing its resources into the crypto space, including rolling out support for more cryptocurrencies, a new international retail-focused wallet and NFT-related features on its platform.

Robinhood rolled out the Beta of its Polygon-based Robinhood Web3 Wallet to 10,000 customers on Sept. 27, with more than 1 million on the waitlist. Robinhood also integrated Circle’s USD Coin (USDC) stablecoin a day later.

During the conference call, Robinhood’s CEO Vladimir Tenev said the firm is planning to offer the Robinhood Wallet to its international retail base in the months to come.

When asked about Robinhood’s plans for nonfungible tokens (NFTs), Tenev said they will likely integrate a feature to view and custody NFTs in the near future. However, connecting to NFT marketplaces didn’t appear to be on Tenev’s radar for the short term.

Tenev also noted that “customers have asked for Robinhood to add more blockchains to increase the breadth of coins available for them to swap and trade.”

While Tenev noted that several more coins were rolled out in Q3, he stressed that Robinhood would not compromise on its vision to become “the safest, most trusted” cryptocurrency service provider:

“We hope that customers understand and appreciate that we're moving carefully [...] Sometimes, that means moving a little bit slower than a lot of these other crypto companies. But we want to be extremely deliberate and to help protect customers and their money.”

Tenev also noted that Robinhood rolled out a free “Learn and Earn” cryptocurrency education program as a means to educate and retain a broader retail base over the long term.

As for Q4 2022, Robinhood’s said it will continue to make progress on its Robinhood Wallet, in addition to its Lightning Network integration.

Robinhood finished the quarter with a net loss of $175 million despite its total net revenue increasing 14% to $361 million. While its adjusted EBITDA was $47 million.

According to Investopedia, Robinhood’s net loss of $0.20 per share for Q3 2022 beat estimates.

Robinhood’s (HOOD) share price dropped 4.36% to $11.40 on Nov. 3, and is down 69.22% over the last 12 months, according to Yahoo Finance.

Stablecoin issuers Circle and Paxos gain approvals in Singapore

The approvals came after the Monetary Authority of Singapore issued two consultation papers that proposed to ease regulatory hurdles for digital asset service providers.

Stablecoin issuers Circle and Paxos have each received approvals for their respective licenses from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), the city-state's central bank.

Circle received in-principle approval for a Major Payments Institution License allowing it to issue cryptocurrencies and facilitate domestic and cross-border payments while Paxos received its license to offer digital payment token services.

Circle and Paxos both announced their approvals on Nov. 2, which came a week after the MAS issued two consultation papers on proposals for regulating digital payment token service providers and stablecoin issuers under Singapore’s Payment Services Act (PSA).

The PSA was passed by the Singapore Parliament in 2019, which purports to regulate payment systems and authorizes MAS to oversee the conduct of payment service providers.

Circle, the issuer behind USD Coin (UDSC), and Paxos with its Pax Dollar (USDP), both U.S. dollar-pegged stablecoins will now be able to offer their respective stablecoins and other digital payment token products within Singapore.

According to Dante Disparte, Circle's Chief Strategy Officer and Global Head of Public Polic, its approval is set to open up greater potential for cryptocurrencies and open payment systems to drive economic growth in Singapore under the more innovative-friendly regulatory framework.

Co-founder and CEO of Circle Jeremy Allaire added the license “in one of the world’s leading financial hubs” will be “instrumental to Circle's regional and global expansion plans in raising global economic prosperity.”

Paxos Asia CEO Rich Teo was also thrilled with its approval:

“We’re excited to have MAS as our regulator, and with their oversight, we’ll be able to safely accelerate consumer adoption of digital assets globally in partnership with the world’s biggest enterprises."

While it remains to be seen how many more firms will follow Circle and Paxos’ footsteps, the easing in regulations comes as MAS knocked back over 100 out of 170 applicants in late 2021 under the tighter regime.

MAS took things one step further in mid-2022 following the now saga that stemmed from Singapore-based and bankrupt Three Arrows Capital’s (3AC), with chief fintech Sopnendu Mohanty stating that MAS will be “brutal and unrelentingly hard” on “bad behavior” from the crypto industry.

Singapore is fighting to take back its perception to be one of the more crypto-friendly countries. However, it continues to tread with caution for retail investors — with Singapore’s largest bank DBS recently deciding to only expand its crypto trading services to accredited investors who meet strict criteria.

Cointelegraph reached out to Circle and Paxos for comment but did not receive an immediate response.

A stablecoin’s rise in market share has ignited the ‘Second Great Stablecoin War’

Since Binance announced it would auto-convert USDC, USDP and TUSD into BUSD on Sept. 6, BUSD’s share of the total stablecoin market has risen from 10.01% to 15.48%.

FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) said the rise of Binance stablecoin BUSD could spark the “Second Great Stablecoin War,” given how fast its market cap has surged over recent months.

Bankman-Fried's recent comments come a month after Binance pushed ahead with plans to auto-convert a host of stablecoins supported on its exchange into BUSD on Sept. 6, — which has seen BUSD's share of the total stablecoin market rise since.

BUSD’s share of the total stablecoin market has risen from 10.01% on Sept. 7 to 15.48% on Oct. 22, according to crypto data aggregator Coin Metrics.

Meanwhile, BUSD’s market cap has risen 3.3% over the last 30 days to $21.7 billion, with the stablecoin only trailing Tether USD (USDT) at $68.4 billion and USD Coin (USDC) at $43.9 billion.

Commenting on the asset’s growth following the move, the FTX CEO noted via Twitter on Oct. 23 that “Binance converts USDC --> BUSD, and we see the change in supplies,” adding “thus begins the second great stablecoin war.”

Bankman-Fried noted that the first "Stablecoin War" was fought between five stablecoins in 2018, leading to USDT and USDC as the two leaders.

Today, USDT still holds a considerable lead with a 48% share of the stablecoin market, though it has fallen from 88% since 2020, while USDC has grown in market share from 10% to 32% in the same period.

Binance's stablecoin's rise is even more prominent, however, growing more than 30x from 0.5% to 15.48% in the same time frame.

SBF added that as BUSD continues to edge its way into the market as the big centralized players fight for dominance, there will likely be more projects sprouting up in the “non-fiat-backed-stablecoin space” also.

“It'll be interesting to see what emerges from the post-Luna and post-DAI-holding-USDC. My guess is that it will be something interest bearing or otherwise with some upside,” he added.

In September, Binance announced it would cease a long list of spot trading asset pairs for USDC, USDP Stablecoin (USDP) and TrueUSD (TUSD), with any users still holding the three stablecoins by Sept. 29 to have their holdings auto-converted to BUSD at a 1:1 ratio.

Binance stated that the move was a decision to enhance liquidity and capital efficiency for users. At the time, Binance said there were immediate plans to do the same to USDT, but noted that this "may change."
