Elon says AI will ‘do everything better than you,’ make employment obsolete

Despite having fathered at least 10 children, Musk also seems to think humans will struggle to find meaning in their lives without employment.

Elon Musk recently doubled-down on his predictions that humans would need a “universal high income” in the wake of artificial intelligence-driven job displacement. This time claiming that without our jobs our purpose in life may eventually be to “give AI meaning.”

The bleak prognostication from the world’s richest person came during the VivaTech 2024 event in Paris as part of a winding speech wherein Musk made fervent claims that AI would provide all of our goods and services in the future.

“My biggest fear is AI,” the mogul said.

OpenAI leadership responds to former employee safety allegations

The company’s head of alignment, Jan Leike, resigned on May 17, stating they’d reached a “breaking point” with management.

Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, the CEO and president of ChatGPT maker OpenAI, respectively, recently took to X.com to publicly discuss the recent departure of Jan Leike, arguably the company’s former top safety officer.

As Cointelegraph recently reported, Leike was the head of alignment. He resigned his post on May 17 citing irreconcilable differences with the company’s leadership.

‘Godfather of AI’ advises UK government to start UBI

Geoffrey Hinton also warns that advanced AI could pose an existential threat within the next five to twenty years.

Geoffrey Hinton, a world-renowned artificial intelligence (AI) expert often referred to as the “Godfather of AI,” recently consulted with members of the United Kingdom’s government at Downing Street where he advised lawmakers to consider adopting a universal basic income (UBI) to deal with the impending threat of job loss.

Until recently, Hinton worked for Google developing high-level AI features for neural networks — the underlying technology that powers most modern generative AI systems such as Google’s Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

According to Hinton, the AI revolution will mostly benefit the rich. Laypersons, blue collar workers, and those employed in jobs that can be automated stand to lose their means of income and “that’s going to be bad for society” he recently told the BBC in an interview.

Vitalik Buterin says GPT-4 has passed the Turing Test

Buterin’s comments reference new research indicating most humans can no longer tell when they’re talking to a machine.

OpenAI’s GPT-4, a generative artificial intelligence (AI) model, has passed the Turing Test, according to Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin.

The Turing Test is a nebulous benchmark for AI systems purported to determine how human-like a conversational model is. The term was coined on account of famed mathematician Alan Turing who proposed the test in 1950.

According to Turing, at the time, an AI system capable of generating text that fools humans into thinking they’re having a conversation with another human would demonstrate the capacity for “thought.”

Sam Altman thinks giving everyone ‘a slice of GPT’ could pay for UBI

He also reiterated his call for an international safety agency to protect against existential threats related to AI.

OpenAI CEO and Tools for Humanity Chairperson Sam Altman believes the progress being carved out by today’s frontier artificial intelligence (AI) models could lead to a vast restructuring of socioeconomics.

Altman recently unveiled a vision wherein treating “compute” as a resource and asset, could supplant monetary income as a means of providing a universal basic income (UBI), during a recent interview on the All-In podcast.

While the interview touched on a number of subjects, it quickly turned to the dangers of AI and how humanity would cope with threats ranging from AI-wrought human extinction to employment displacement. On the former subject, Altman acknowledged that there could come a time when AI models were sufficiently capable of posing such threats.
