Blockchain and the Metaverse make inroads at Consumer Electronics Show

Samsung will feature its developments in Metaverse technology in relation to TVs and smartphones, with several other companies showcasing blockchain, NFT and crypto integrations with the Metaverse.

Blockchain, metaverse and NFT technology are set to make a splash at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) event in Las Vegas this week.

The CES is an annual event that features exhibitions of the latest tech advancements and keynote speeches from giants such as LG, Samsung, Amazon, Nvidia and Sony.

This year’s event runs between Jan. 5 and Jan. 7 and will host more than 2200 exhibitors, with crypto and NFT companies a notable addition to the perennial gadget makers and TV manufacturers.

In terms of the blockchain sector, the exhibitors grouped under the cryptocurrency category include the derivatives and NFT exchange FTX, NFT platform Blockparty and NFT Software and hardware developers Atomic Form.

The event’s keynote speeches will feature crypto figures including Filecoin founding director Clara Tsao, Celsius Network chief growth and product officer Tushar Nadkami, Coinbase chief policy officer Faryar Shirzad and Art Blocks Inc founder and CEO Erick Calderon to name a few.

“Are stablecoins really stable? How are traditional banks embracing crypto? Should my company be accepting crypto payments? We tackle the big questions with today’s top experts,” the preview for the Decrypting Crypto panel says. The lineup includes Nadkami, Tsao, Transform Ventures CEO Michael Terpin and Blockchain Association executive director Kristin Smith.

According to conference organizer the Consumer Technology Association, several top brands will use their spots at the event to explore and promote developments in Metaverse tech such as “hardware, software, and the blockchain and crypto.”

Speaking on Samsung’s plans for CES the manufacturer recently ramped up its blockchain initiatives by announcing an NFT platform for its new smart TVs CTA senior manager of industry intelligence Brian Comiskey told The Australian that:

“We’ll really be looking at Samsung. Their smartphone advancements at the show will be an interesting area to watch from the hardware Metaverse side. Their televisions are even going to be showcasing what they can do for the Metaverse.”

“They’re really trying to be a one-stop hub for various internet-based economies and technologies,” he added.

Comiskey made some bullish statements on crypto, blockchain tech and NFTs when speaking about the interest from mainstream firms, labeling them the “future evolution of payments and what trade looks like” that will rise alongside the Metaverse.

“I think NFTs and cryptocurrency really represents an opportunity for blockchain to become more popular with consumers,” he said.

Samsung uses blockchain technology to address climate change

The Galaxy phone maker will lead a tree-planting initiative in Madagascar and track it using distributed ledger technology.

Samsung Electronics America announced Monday at the CES Tech Conference in Las Vegas its partnership with veritree, a blockchain-based climate solutions platform, to plant two million mangrove trees in Madagascar over the next three months. veritree uses blockchain technology to manage the reforestation process and verify each tree that is planted.

The tree-planting initiative is part of Samsung’s nature-based action plan on environmental sustainability, specifically to capture and sequester carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. The goal is to restore roughly 200 hectares of land and sequester roughly 1 billion pounds of CO2 over a 25-year period.

Veritree, developed by tentree, a sustainable apparel company that plants 10 trees for every item of clothing sold, will handle the logistics. Built as an accounting system, veritree attempts to provide greater transparency of the entire process from field-level data collection, site planning, tree inventory and impact monitoring. Tree planters use their phones to track trees that a sponsor has paid to plant, essentially creating a digital map of the corresponding digital trees.

Samsung’s head of corporate sustainability Mark Newton said that investing in innovative technology and so-called "nature-based solutions" is vital for combatting climate change.

According to Samsung, mangrove trees are some of the world’s most effective nature-based carbon sinks. Mangrove roots, which are usually covered by water, capture and store CO2 in the soil. Samsung plans to work with local community members of the Mahajanga region of Madagascar, a region faced with large deforestation, to reach its two million tree goal by the end of the first quarter.

The tree-planting initiative is part of Samsung's growing efforts around sustainability. In addition to using renewable energy in the United States, the company recently unveiled a new smart TV lineup with an integrated NFT platform.

Samsung announces NFT platform for smart TVs

Upcoming Samsung smart TVs will have a built-in platform where users can browse, buy and sell NFTs.

South Korean tech giant Samsung revealed a new smart TV lineup with an integrated NFT platform. Samsung’s 2022 smart TVs such as Micro LED, Neo QLED and The Frame will have an NFT Platform app that can be used “for discovering, purchasing and trading digital artwork,” according to the announcement on Monday.

“With demand for NFTs on the rise, the need for a solution to today’s fragmented viewing and purchasing landscape has never been greater,” the company noted.

In 2022, the company aims to introduce the first smart TV NFT explorer and marketplace aggregator. The upcoming platform would enable viewers to browse and also trade NFTs without leaving the couch. While it's unclear exactly which NFT platforms or marketplaces would be included for aggregation, Samsung promised its smart TVs will not tamper with the image quality, keeping the NFT creator's preset values.

Other than integrating NFTs in their products, the South Korean multinational conglomerate has been actively investing in NFT and metaverse projects through its venture capital arm, Samsung Next. Last Wednesday, the firm participated in the investment round for a metaverse gaming platform.

Aside from Samsung, other big companies have also boarded the NFT train. Back in July 2021, Coca-Cola got into NFTs for charitable purposes. A month later, Visa purchased a CryptoPunk NFT for $150,000.

Meanwhile, digital art collections and digital collectibles NFT sales dominated last year comprising 91% of total NFT sales. As the sales rise, more and more NFT and metaverse-based companies are raising significant amounts to fund their projects. Blockchain gaming companies also raised more than a billion in investments last year.

Multiverse secures $15M investment from Samsung Next, leading blockchain VCs

“Ideas have value,” said Cliff Szu, co-founder of Multiverse Labs. “[O]ur overriding goal is to help people with great ideas to discover the true value of their innovations and inventions.”

Multiverse, a decentralized artificial intelligence ecosystem that funds early-stage tech companies, has secured $15 million in investments from some of blockchain’s biggest venture funds.

Samsung Next, a developer ecosystem focused on AI, blockchain and fintech, was among the investors, along with Arrington XRP Capital, Huobi Ventures and Fenbushi, Multiverse announced Wednesday. With the raise, Multiverse now has an implied valuation of $250 million, making it one of the largest ecosystem developer funds at the intersection of blockchain and AI.

The investment will go towards expanding Multiverse's capacity across engineering, research and marketing. The organization is eyeing a bigger presence in Europe and Southeast Asia.

Multiverse allows early-stage project developers to experiment with ideas and solicit feedback as they test their concepts. Platform users themselves can earn rewards for their contributions through the AI token, which is native to the Multiverse platform.

Cliff Szu, co-founder of Multiverse Labs, said his platform provides a safe space for developers to evaluate their ideas and receive feedback from a knowledgeable community.

“Many potential founders decide the risks outweigh the rewards, or simply have no access to external capital, particularly in emerging economies,” he said. “So we are creating a safe space for them to thoroughly evaluate the potential of their ideas, and to learn from a supportive and knowledgeable community that can contribute towards their success at the earliest possible stage.”

Blockchain development studios have been gaining traction recently, as more companies look to foster innovation in the nascent industry. As Cointelegraph reported, crypto unicorn Amber Group has launched a new platform for creators of nonfungible tokens, or NFTs. Subject matter experts within crypto have also made their services available for a mentorship program centered around Solana’s high-performance blockchain.

On the venture capital front, investors have poured billions into blockchain startups this year alone — a feat that was unaffected by the multi-month downtrend in cryptocurrency prices.

New Samsung service Paperless adds document disposal to enterprise blockchain

Samsung SDS has launched a new cloud-based blockchain service called Paperless to address forgery and falsification problems in documents.

Samsung SDS, the information and communication technologies (ICT) arm of Samsung, launched a new service named Paperless to provide reliability and transparency of documents in a cloud environment.

Launched as a cloud-based blockchain-as-a-service (BaaS) solution for enterprises, Paperless manages sensitive documents such as contracts, consent forms and certificates on blockchain to prevent forgery and falsification. According to the official announcement, the new service can be used in various fields such as voting or tasks that require various proof documents.

Paperless also enables the management of documents that need to be disposed of after a certain period by encrypting and storing sensitive or large-volume data at a separate server, only keeping the hash value of each data on blockchain.

Since all data history such as the creation, revision and disposal of documents is recorded on the blockchain in real time, this design combining on-chain and off-chain technology addresses “the slowdown of blockchain’s transaction speed due to massive volumes of data,” the announcement reads.

Samsung SDS added that the company applied its Paperless service to its salary contracts for employees, company-wide voting and certificate management to streamline complex processes.

The ICT subsidiary of the South Korean tech giant is a known explorer of blockchain technology. Last year, Samsung SDS announced that it would conduct a series of pilot projects to test blockchain-powered medicine distribution management to guarantee transparency in tracking pharmaceutical drugs.

Samsung itself is also a participant in the blockchain race. The company previously filed a patent for a programmable blockchain solid-state drive (SSD) and switch, although this patent is yet to bear tangible fruits.
